  2. If I told you I’d changed my name to Martin Le-May I’m pretty sure nobody would believe me and I’d be lying if I said I’d taken this outstanding photograph as many will have seen it featured in the national press early last week. It’s not often I gasp when looking at a photograph but this one made do it - out loud as well. I realise I’m bending the rules of this thread somewhat – so how about having a thread on the ‘most amazing photographs you’ve ever seen’ type thing so we can move this magnificent photograph into a more appropriate place. Please delete this post if needs be. Derek http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31711446

  4. I read an interview somewhere a few months ago where an American radio DJ had some sort of agreement with Chess records to play 16 records an hour by them. Struth you can only play 20-22 records full length in an hour so it didn't leave much air play for anything on other labels did it? No wonder Chess records became so mighty. It was a rough tough world in the sixties. Derek
  5. Interview with Geoff Oakes the main man behind Renaissance in Mansfield: https://www.dmcworld.net/dj-tv/entry/question-and-answer/geoff-oakes--henry-blunt-539.html And I quote: Where did the inspiration for Renaissance begin? "It probably came from a combination of influences from the Hacienda and my earlier clubbing years at the Wigan Casino......”
  6. Following on from the recent thread Northern Soul DeeJay pay (started by wiggyflat 23 January 2015) here's some slightly factual (coughs) maybe articles on the subject. How true they are is anybodies guess. Derek (I've never done a gig in Las Vegas but I have DJ'd in Stalyvegas..........) 7. I got into proper soul music quite late on in life compared to many on here - at school aged 16 (circa 1973) I had a brief flirtation with a Nazareth album (‘Razamanaz’) about the same time as me saying to a friend “why do I wanna watch lions and elephants juggling balls and stuff” when dismissing completely ‘Monty Pythons Flying Circus’ which was massive on TV at the time. When I did watch it I was too young to understand it. Soon I’d started to listen and enjoy the various sweet pop soul releases by The Stylistics which were all over the radio at the time. My disco feet were starting to twitch. I recall going to the pub one dinnertime with people from work possibly 1974 ish to celebrate somebody’s birthday or whatever and a girl kept putting this song on the jukebox. I even asked her what it was and the seed was planted. Still sounds exceptionally cool today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onTzLFJ14tA By the time I was late 17 I’d started to drink in town with all the big boys and frequent all those places you were advised not to drink in. One of them was The Ring Bar a mainly black bar underneath a hotel at the top end of town. It was 1975 and I was 18 and this burnt a hole straight through my mind. One Christmas there was the first time I got threatened with a knife for spilling a drink. The bar later got fire bombed by some rough types from Shipley so I’m told. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O78bo0uxf_Y
  8. Never realised her version was a cover of a Little Anthony song - a quick look at the song writing credits would've pointed me in the right direction. Normally I pick up on this sort of thing but in this case I must've nodded off temporarily. Nice one chaps. A Google search threw up a Refosoul link from Pete Smith from June 2008 and Popsike shows the Ebay sale from March 2008 as mentioned by Pete where the acetate credited to Little Anthony Gourdine sold for a tidy £316. https://www.popsike.com/Little-Anthony-Gourdine-On-A-Magic-Carpet-Ride/330218343808.html (Text from Ebay listing as follows) Little Anthony Gourdine (??) - On A Magic Carpet Ride . Original UK 7" 45rpm "Unreleased" Single Sided Emidisc Acetate. This Acetate came with a collection of others that were once the property of Mike Vickers. Mike Vickers was responsible for the arrangements on Kiki Dee's version of this track that was released in the UK on Fontana Records. As far as I can ascertain apart from Kiki Dee's version of this, the only other version that is known of was recorded for Roulette Records in the USA by Derek Martin and that remained unreleased until recently. This appears to have been recorded for Demonstration purposes only and was sent to the UK on tape and then cut to this acetate for reference. I'm not 100% sure the vocal is by Anthony Gourdine but it sounds just like him and I'd imagine this track would have been offered to him first as Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike wrote a huge amount of material for Little Anthony and The Imperials. The label and sleeve are stamped "Franklyn Boyd Music Ltd" who were Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike's Publishers in the UK. In VG+ Condition.
  9. Meant to mention it earlier but forgot - Derek Martin did an unreleased version of "Magic Carpet Ride" during his Roulette years. Derek
  10. Every now and then I go visit a lad (a well known Leeds fan and Adam Ant devotee) called Jonah at his house in town and we try and swop/buy/sell some records between us mainly punk, reggae and soul 45s. He’s got records all over the place, piles here piles there, mainly from many years of DJing on the punk scene and active searching through charity shops, car boots etc etc. Anyway one day as I’m wading through this pile I happens by chance to fall on a wedge of about half a dozen Kiki Dee 45s all on uk Fontana and all mint. In conversation Jonah tells me one of his best mates was somehow related to Kiki Dee (Auntie or something?) that’s how he acquired all her Fontana singles. Unfortunately the title everybody wants to sell on wasn’t there, so I casually asked “You haven’t got.......” I didn’t even need to finish the sentence, he knew what I was on about, he cut me short and said “Nah sold it years ago for alot of money”. We both laughed and it still makes me chuckle to this day. derek Kiki Dee was born in Bradford and was the first white British female to be signed to Motown in 1970. Over her lengthy career she’s released 40 singles and 12 albums according to Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiki_Dee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL_wL8kTy5k

  15. A quick leap over to the Discogs website to pull up The Isley Brothers discography reveals a multitude of compilations. A quick scan down those that fit the bill and voila - The Isley Brothers '16 Greatest Hits' on the Canadian Trip label released 1972. "This Old Heart Of Mine" is listed as an Instrumental (at a lengthy 4.44 minutes long) performed by The Fire & Fury Band (band members uncredited). Wouldn't mind hearing it to be honest - copies of said album are dirt cheap by the looks of it as well. Derek
  16. It would make me very sad to hear of your demise Ian but I'd be honoured to write your obituary. But please try hold on a bit longer - just give it a couple o' weeks after you've got the competition up an' running eh? Derek Thought I'd mention it in passing but have you got any thoughts on somebody looking after your collection at all?
  17. A mate of mine swears blind it was quite a big tune at The Wheel in Manchester. Is this code talk for something else or am I being a bit daft? Even my pet dog Spanker thinks this record is Bonio. Derek x
  18. As far back as I can remember (which must be touching close to the end of the seventies) every time when the name of Ian Dewhirst came into conversation all I ever heard people say without fail was good things about the man. People used many long flowing words I'd never heard of before - generous was one I distinctly recall mentioned. No matter what the subject was he was always held in very high esteem and the pedestal he was placed on was very high indeed. Nothings changed it's exactly the same today as it was then. Knowing all what's been said about you and I guess you've been thinking about it - I gotta admit it would be a great idea if you could donate a copy of The Odyssey: A Northern Soul Time-Capsule Box Set to the winner of a competition set by you here on Soul Source. I say 3 cheers for Ian - hip hip hoorah, hip hip hoorah, hip hip hoorah, I'm gonna write to my MP straightaway that man should get an OBE for Services To Music. All together now - for he's a jolly good fellow........
  19. And another extended version from the same chap. My second pleasant surprise of the evening Derek Extended version II (5.35mins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM8eb0fiJ9g
  20. It's not often I listen to these type of remixes but this chap used the right language and quite a large amount of skills. Derek Extended version (4.11 mins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slOQu82QLRo
  21. Over the years I’ve asked myself several times“so what is it exactly that I like about soul music so much?” Well this release ticks all the boxes on my checklist and sums up what I could never say in less than 3 minutes. The Four Tops “Just ask the lonely” (2.50 mins ish) released just at the beginning of 1965 as the US involvement in the Vietnam war escalated even further, resulting in more and more young Americans being drafted into the area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLCr1DoL4mI Quote: Levi Stubbs’s acapella was the most feared by many of the other Motown performers. Smokey Robinson once said the performers used to go to house parties for acapella contests and the winner would win the money collected. Whenever the Four Tops showed, they knew the contest was over! So every now and then after putting away far more than the Governments recommended daily intake of alcohol you might start deluding yourself a bit and daydreaming, “I can sing a bit you know, if only I’d have tried a bit harder, rehearsed a bit more on a good day I could have fronted most of the super groups and given their lead singers a bloody good run for the money”. Oh really? You think you got what it takes? For starters follow this, match it and even better it (if at all humanely possible). Quite simply the distillation and very essence of a male lead vocal in it’s purest form. Breathtaking is the word I’d use. 22. so would I Kev so would I. Unfortunately and rather sadly me thinks the labels on the white demo's aren't that exciting at all with no reference anywhere to it being a demo/promo copy. See the attached 2 scans I pulled off Popsike recently - on cold lonely nights I can often be seen staring at them longingly for quite a considerable time. derek
  23. anybody got a white demo of said tune they would be willing to part with? Gotta be in at least VG++.condition And please don't pull mi pants down....... Please correspond by PM's ta. Derek x
  24. Gibby from Halifax guesting on BCB 106.6FM tonight 22.11.14 @ 9-10pm At the controls will be MC Pearson complete with baseball cap on sideways. We laugh in the face of technical problems and carry on regardless. Derek x
  25. Blimey I thought there was only me in the whole wide world that likes this record - it never seems to get talked about anywhere. It's not that expensive as Detroit 45's go but when did you last ever see one up for grabs? Either in sales boxes or on lists? I've got eagle eyes and I ain't seen one hidden in the small print on page 7 anywhere. Me thinks the complete lack of demand for it has stiffed it's price somewhat. Remember playing it at Craig Butler's house in Brighouse one night many years ago - whilst praising the record and making scribbled notes he glanced towards the deck. On realising what the record was and without missing a beat he casually mentions "You know these are The Falcons under another name?" Pearson shot down in flames once again. I feigned illness and left soon after - then spent several hours (days) re-reading old lists and fanzines from cover to cover. None of this unfortunately helps you obtain the record - sorry. Derek
