Joe Mayfield - 'I'm On The Move' - Excello
Derek Pearson replied to Sean Hampsey's topic in Record Wants
Hey up Mister Hampsey - how's things with you? Derek -
As well as Mister Flynn's rather excellent website it's worth a shot casting your eye over the 45cat website www.45cat.com which I always find to be very useful indeed. Derek
-
And once you've seen what Barnaby Bye actually looked like - it's even easier to dislike them. Derek
-
phew, blimey I wish you luck - there's no simple way 'round it - I look at and go through probably hundreds and hundreds of records on a weekly basis if I'm lucky and I learn summat new every time. Stuff I didn't know and have passed over several times over the last year or so I pick up nowadays and so on and so on and so on. I'm sure you know as well as I do that learning the ins and outs of a new genre is a very, very long road indeed - think how long it took you to acquire all that knowledge on music that you like and collect - never mind stuff you're not that keen on. They say knowledge is power and the first point of call would be to check completed UK listings of R&B/Soul 12" singles on Ebay on a regular weekly basis to get a feel of what sells and how much for. Derek

It's near guaranteed that in every new thread I read I learn summat new. In this thread I learnt several new things: (1) Barnaby Bye wasn't a solo singer (as I'd previously thought) they were a 4 man group. (2) Didn't know "Can't Live This Way" came out on the local label, Nimbus 9, prior to being picked up by Atlantic. (3) Paul Nicola won't want to buy the rare Atlantic Barnaby Bye issue I was going to offer him. Derek

Chuck Cockerham review in Blues and Soul
Derek Pearson replied to Rick Cooper's topic in Look At Your Box
Many years ago at some all-nighter somewhere in the Midlands, an old buddy of mine John Weston and I were involved in a pretty deep conversation about the decline of the Scottish cod population throughout the years 1930-1950. Part way through the subject of vinyl records somehow filtered into the flow of things. I mentioned Chuck Cockerham. John said "Don't ever play the flip side - it's Country & Western". I was scarred mentally. And I've never mentioned it till now. It was my guilty secret. Tell me it's not true. Derek -

After writing this a few days ago I must've started thinking about which people might have actually taken photographs of places like this way back in the early seventies. And the name I kept coming back to was John Anderson. As far as I know he was one of the first from the UK to start hoovering up old unwanted vinyl from across the states on an industrial level. For him it was business and I guess he was far too busy to even think about taking photographs. But I imagine photgraphs would have been taken by those in the early waves of Brits abroad as it would be like a dream come true for many. Oh to be surrounded by thousands of 45's in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Derek But until we actually see those photographs I guess we'll never know. They're out there somewhere I know it. A bit like original amateur video footage from the inside of Wigan Casino......or The Torch or even The Wheel.

Jay Traynor founder member of the group Jay & the Americans - well ya learn summat new everyday eh? Trouble is I forget 10 old stuff everyday...... Derek

Wow The Allstate Record Distributing Company in Chicago. When people often talk about wishing they had some sort of time machine which could transport them backwards through time here's a place I'd have loved to have spent a couple o' weeks wandering about in. Somewhere in this big wide world of ours somebody will have a drawer full of crumpled black n white photographs of this place (inside and out) but I ain't seen them yet. Even checked out those 'Memories From Old Chicago" forum type threads..... I thought I was the only odd ball that did this - phew thank you. Derek

So what is this record I'm trying to remember?
Derek Pearson replied to purist's topic in Look At Your Box
On first hearing I'm sure I can hear The Shangri-Las "Leader Of The Pack" on the intro of The Bonnets 45. The former was a big hit in 1964 and as a betting man I suspect the latter came out pretty soon afterwards. The Ronettes, The Bonnets - next you'll be telling me there's a Tonettes somewhere....... Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Record Sales
First time today I've really had some spare time to check through my PM's - flipping heck I didn't expect such a response. Thanks to everybody that's requested it - however time constraints mean I can only contact the winner so if you don't hear from me later tonight assume you were unlucky this time. Derek -

Following on from the Benny Latimore Atlantic/Dade single sided test press which I sold earlier today I remembered I had a Barbara Lynn “This is the thanks I get” on a very similar looking Atlantic single sided test press. After a bit of investigation turns out Benny Latimore’s 45 was released in May 1967 whilst Barbara Lynn’s effort came out several months later in November of the same year. Assume Atlantic pushed out many of these advance test press promos during this time period. So have any members on here got any others? I do need only the mere flimsiest of excuses to post up a clip of Barbara’s simply immortal song. It doesn’t get much better than this quote unquote. It’s as good as it gets. Copies are all over Ebay for a tenner or so. Sometimes I wish I didn’t know it so I could revel in hearing it again for the first time. Derek

Bear in mind I don't know Johnny Ray's song but the first thing that came into my mind was Teddy Greene's "Cry" on Capitol. "Soulful vocal big production" yep it ticks all those boxes with room to spare. But it's not uptempo or from the late 60's - it's New York 1964 through and through. Apparently that's the only record ever released by him. Derek

Junior Parker BlueRock 4080 NOW SORTED
Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Record Wants
I would have thought there's loads of copies of this 45 gathering dust somewhere all over the UK? Tell you what 'cos I'm a big hitter I'll splash out a tenner for a copy in excellent nick. And that includes P&P chaps - let's not get over giddy! A white demo at that price would be the business. Derek
