  1. June Conquest Seems like she only recorded within a 7 year period from 1965 to 1972 and in that time only had 6 singles released. Here’s 2 of my favourites. Even today with a bit o’ digging about I’m sure you can probably still find copy’s of both for a tenner each? They don’t have to be rare or expensive to be brilliant. Derek but who exactly was The Demon? One of the first records in that new wave of northern circa 1984 that hit big as Stafford opened its doors and ushered in a bright new generation. “Almost Persuaded” (Fame) ©1965 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orn4_KJcdhY “All I Need” (Windy City) ©1967 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujKZBax1CY8
  2. If you think that's bad try imagine what the record bar was like at Wigan Casino hahaha? 200 people crammed into your front room all verballing like crazy for 8 hours. With not a chair in sight. Derek Great post - will read the article after I've had mi tea.
  3. For your enjoyment. Derek Major Lance is the black geezer dressed in white stood on the stage.
  4. Just discovered I had a spare copy of his debut album from 1990 – £5 if anybody wants it? JEFF REDD ‘A Quiet Storm’ (uk MCA) Includes the superb two step “Love High” which I seem to recall was a big spin at places like Parkers in Manchester at the time of release. 8. Bit of interesting background info me thinks. The Abstract Reality were in fact Michael Campbell and Raymond Monette the writers of the songs. As Michael and Raymond they cut the northern classic “Man Without A Woman” on RCA 47-9244 and released the same month as the Sport 45. They also recorded “If Only You Knew” as Mike and Ray on the Detroit based Giant (G-706) label in 1966. Derek
  9. Always wanted a copy on Impel but never actually got one. For years I assumed it came out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida as stated on the label and when I was down that area trawling for vinyl hoped I would find/stumble on a copy but I never did. As usual I was looking in the wrong place I should have been hundred miles away in North Carolina. Derek "Over the course of three decades beginning in the late 1950s, David Lee, this unheralded songwriter, musician, producer, and entrepreneur released fourteen 45s and two LPs on his Impel, Washington Sound, and SCOP labels, run out of his Washington Sound record shop in Shelby, North Carolina". https://theruralsite.blogspot.fr/2012/03/david-lee-carolina-soul-paradise-of.html
  10. Also true originals have the song credits in a straight line on the right hand side of the label whereas the pressing doesn't. Derek
  11. Way back in the mid ‘90’s whilst in America looking for records I was reliably informed by a well known dealer in Pittsburgh that the only sure fire way to get a definite October 1962 released original of this record was to obtain the green stock copy. It was bootlegged quite heavily (time period unknown) as a pretty convincing white demo in the Pittsburgh area to supply local demand so I was told. Apparently it was a big record for local Radio DJ legend ‘Mad Mike’ (Metrovich) in the mid ‘60’s. The first press has Nashville Matrix and Bell Sound stamped in the run out groove just like my green stock copy has. Derek
  12. Anybody fancy a near mint copy of this good old fashioned Chicago stomper? £80 all in (anywhere in the world). Paypal is good. Please PM to reserve etc. Ta. Derek This isn’t beat ballad or anywhere near mid tempo; the seventies were still a long way off and anything funky was never included. This is northern pure and simple. 13. Anybody fancy a near mint copy of this rather wonderfull Chicago beauty from 1970? £65 all in (anywhere in the world). SOLD SOLD SOLD Paypal is good. Please PM to reserve etc. Ta. 14. You mean this one Peter? Derek
  15. I've got a couple of original transparency's taken at the September 1974 photo session which never made it onto either the Demon album sleeve or the CD reissue. Size wise they're only just over an inch or so square and I've quickly scanned them and attempted to enlarge them. If I spend a bit more time and knew what I was doing I'm sure I could make the end result a damn sight easier to look at. Derek
  16. Hey up Chalky - fairly certain I've got summat like a flyer and/or ticket tucked away somewhere - but whether I can find it is another matter (laughs......) Seem to think it was printed on thin card so it might have been a ticket or summat? Does that ring any bells with anybody else? Derek
  17. From 2008 to 2011 I religiously bought Record Collector magazine every month intending to read it from cover to cover. But I never did, the pile of mags next to the tele got bigger and bigger as I read less and less of it. In the end I stopped buying it every month as I simply couldn't keep up with it. Frustration started to creep in as I was only reading about half of the actual third I wanted to......oh well. So how great was it when last week on going to get my hair cut (religiously every month) I spotted an old copy of RC ** on the table. I was third in the queue to get a trim so had plenty of time to work my way through it page by page. I remember an old mate of mine Matthew Simpson once told me he used to devour every copy of RC he could get his hands on. Then lo and behold tucked away on the letters page I spots this from the legendary Ian Clark down there in deepest Norfolk. Looking for records at armed forces radio stations - wow you learn summat new every day eh!? Derek ** #401 May 2012
  18. "he rang the company up to see if he could get them back" - I'll bet he did! Pretty sharpish as well. Probably offered to come down in a taxi to pick 'em up (all the way from Leeds). Oh well it's only vinyl. Derek
  19. Following on from the Picture Sleeves Value thread I'd be interested to see what other members think are the most desirable picture sleeves to wrap around some of our rare American soul 45s? Collecting picture sleeves isn't really my thing so my knowledge is pretty limited so for starters how about - H.B. Barnum "It hurts too much to cry" (RCA). The Commands on Dynamic. Damn brain freeze has just suddenly walked into my mind. Help me out chaps. Desirable could also mean most valuable and/or rarest. Derek The Metroes "Since I Found My Baby" on German RCA looks very neat indeed but that doesn't count on this thread it'll be on the follow up.
  20. When records were big this was so unbelievably massive. Such a record of its time. Play it today and get barely a ripple. Derek
  21. Shades Of Soul with Derek Pearson on the Bradford based community station BCB Radio 106.6FM Saturday 5th October 2015 @ 9-10pm Tonights special guest is Dave Longbottom from Keighley - a long standing and well known figure at soul clubs across the north. The common theme that’s constant as a rock which runs through virtually all the guests I’ve ever had here on BCB is the pure unbridled mad passionate obsession with the music Black America has gifted us throughout the last 50 odd years or so. Tonight’s special guest exemplifies this spirit to the full – Dave Longbottom from Keighley routinely graces the airwaves of South Craven and the Yorkshire Dales on the community station Drystone Radio 103.5FM. Catch his weekly show every Thursday night 20:00 – 21:00pm it’s full of the good stuff. As usual when hanging out with mates sixty minutes soon passes in an hour – so fasten your safety belts we could go anywhere…and often do. Listen live on www.bcbradio.co.uk/player/ Derek
  22. The International GTO’s were Willie Powell (Baritone), Tunde Aleem (2nd Tenor) (later Arthur Allen), Norman Dade (1st Tenor) and Tommy Lockhart (Lead Vocal). Their Rojac 45 was recorded in 1966. GTO's means Gran Trismo Orgettos in Latin. They also recorded as the Master Four on Tayster in 1967 (“Love From The Far East”). Derek
  23. DJ’s if you want a 100% full on sixties stormer to reactivate then look no further than this little beauty. Check the soundfile – it sounds amazing when played out loud even more so when you haven’t heard it in ages? When was the last time you heard it played out? INTERNATIONAL GTO’s “I Love My Baby / It’s Been Raining In My Heart” (Rojac 1007) Bell Sound stamped original moulded label. Labels reversed so “It’s been raining” side plays “I love my baby”. Light surface mark across whole record not affecting play. Name in blue pen on label. Overall condition Excellent minus. £300 all in. YouTube clip added purely for reference (not taken from copy on sale): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJU8yQfckyU PM to reserve. Ta. Derek
  24. Record Store Day - what a great idea and it must be fantastic for people that like to acquire some of the unique records released specifically to tie in with this annual occasion. Must admit my knowledge of these RSD releases is pretty flimsy to say the least so can any of the more educated members on here suggest any releases which would be of interest to the soul fans on this forum? Or indeed fans of black music in general. Ta. Derek
