Alfreda Brocklington/Jesse Johnson/Eddie & Ernie

Oops had completely forgotten about this instrumental to "Outcast" and to make it worse I've actually got both records tucked away somewhere upstairs. Derek -
Virtually every time I hear a record for the first time I’ve got this weird habit of linking it to summat else - either another record it sounds like (or from a DJing perspective) what other record would follow it nicely. Fairly certain I used to have a copy of AB many years ago but not anymore. Recently whilst mooching about on Youtube I was curious to remind myself what it sounded like. That intro sounds like a direct lift off summat else but could I heckers like figure out. Then eventually the penny dropped. Que second clip. Alfreda Brocklington “Your love has got me chained and bound” (Phila Soul) Jesse Johnson “Left Out” (OldTown) Over the years I’ve read several times and been told by other collectors that this sounds similar to the above record. Mmmm possibly - I’m not so sure. Eddie & Ernie “Outcast” (Eastern)

The parliaments, "rainy day", on e-bay, end price,?
Derek Pearson replied to De-to's topic in Look At Your Box
Hey up Chalky - now there's a great idea for a thread? Best Ten Records made big by Butch. Derek -
Even to this day I've always thought "Give Me Love" sounds very similar to something else out of Detroit (like a Steve Mancha production perhaps?) but I haven't got the ears to figure it out properly. Over the years every time this record has cropped up in conversation I've always chipped in with the revelation that Tootsie Rollers was the name of a popular sweet at the time in America. Guess I must've read it somewhere? But is it true? If it is - it could mean that Tootsie Rollers isn't the singers actual real name - just a stage name or another singer singing under that name. Darrow Fletcher Young Misery Groovy white demo £80 EX
Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Record Sales
Hey up Mark - yeah agreed it is a fabulous record and I'm glad its going down well for you at the moment. Must admit though whilst DJing with it over the years I've had very mixed responses to it - sometimes it clears the floor whilst other times it peaks with half a dozen people or so. Think I might've been playing it out in the wrong clubs (smile). Black issues are all over the place but the lovely looking white demos just don't turn up that often now a days especially in as good a nick as this one is. -
Anybody fancy a near mint copy of this good old fashioned Chicago stomper? £80 all in (anywhere in the world). Paypal is good. Please PM to reserve etc. Ta. Derek This isn’t beat ballad or anywhere near mid tempo; the seventies were still a long way off and anything funky was never included. This is northern pure and simple. DARROW FLETCHER “My Young Misery” (Groovy G 3004) white demo with free Allstate Distributors sticker YouTube clip added purely for reference (not taken from copy on sale): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8-a55zwYrU

I'm In Love With You Bobby Wade or Verna & Rob
Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Look At Your Box
Hey up Kegsy - how's it going? Derek According to Buckeye Beat: The Way Out numbering system is pretty confusing at first. The original series was not numbered, using only the RCA master numbers. During the MGM period, the 1000 numbering was used. In the late 1960s, post MGM, a 2000 number series was used. For some reason, the 2000 series are by far the rarest titles on the label. The 100 series was the last, starting in 1971. It's possible that the numbering series were used depending on who was producing and/or providing the money. A couple one-shot numbers also exist. -

Didn't know (hadn't heard) The Volcanic Eruption before so checked out YouTube - -
Hi Mark - because of the quality he showed on this debut album I’d often wondered if he’d cut anything else? A little bit of digging revealed that in 1993, Redd recorded a second 10 track album entitled ‘Down Low’. Unfortunately, it was only available in the shops for 3 days before MCA closed their entire black music department and all the CD's were recalled, pulled from the distributors and destroyed. However it was too late to recall one export shipment to the UK and it's this shipment that went on sale and sold out within hours through the record shops. Apparently only 1000 copies were ever circulated. In 2015 the Japanese label P-Vine records gave this CD a long overdue official re-release. And as a bonus they added a previously un-issued track to the package. Derek

"Run For Your Life" 3 versions but which do you prefer?
Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Look At Your Box
Words by John Manship (YouTube 13 Dec 2011). Robert Bateman's association with Luther Ingram created one of the all time Top Ten Northern Soul anthems when they laid down the "If It's All The Same To You" c/w "Exus Trek" tracks for HIB. To this day considered "As Good As It Gets Northern Soul". Before you today is another Bateman/Ingram pairing that again created two killer Northern soul tracks - Robert's embryonic Detroit career honing skills with partner Brian Holland at Motown - this is a "Brainbert" project. A-side is a grinding gravel-strewn-journey into the deep moody depths of Luther Ingram's soul, constantly prompted by a Mike Terry-esque baritone sax, blaring horns, tinkling Earl Van Dyke style keyboard work all dissolve into a Detroit Northern Soul dancer without one commercial note being played. This is street-level individualism bordering on genius. If that were not enough - just flip it over - WOW it's just as good! So much rarer than their HIB 45 - but has languished in the lower reaches of value even though this is one very difficult 45 to capture, all down to lack of NS exposure. Future potential for a value hike for this sleeper - quite frankly is glaringly obvious. -
Always loved Bobby Wade's well known 1971 released "I'm In Love With You" (soul perfection near as damn it in my book). But much less well known is the version from 2 years earlier also on the same label. Derek “I’m In Love With You” Bobby Wade on Way Out W-102 written by Middlebrook and Middlebrook released 1971. Apparently arranged by Mike Terry but nothing stated on credits. Released on 2 different pressings – the grey label version was a Boddie press; the red & white label unknown. “I’m In Love With You” Verna & Rob on Way Out 1966 written by Verna & Rob released 1969. Arranged by Mike Terry. Because I’m so clever I sorta naturally and lazily assumed the Rob on this release was Bobby Wade. But upon delveing a bit further I discovered the song was recorded by husband and wife team Verna and Robert Middlebrooks. It turns out a year or so later Lou Ragland roped in the Middlebrooks and James McClain to form The Volcanic Eruption’s who had the one off “I’ve Got Something Going For Me” on Way Out 2006 co-written by Lou Ragland and released in 1970. James McClain was also a member of the Springers.

“Run For Your Life” 3 versions – but which do you prefer? Derek Douglas Gibson with the Sweet and the Sours (Tangerine TRC 969) Harrison Brothers (Bobalou BL 1001) Luther Ingram (Hurdy Gurdy R 102) Born in 1937 he would have been 28 when he cut this absolute beast of a tune in 1965. It’s likely to pre-date his other 45 released later that year on Decca which would make this his debut release on 45 under his own name. That would help explain it’s ridiculous rarity. Sounding more Detroit than Detroit itself. It’s got everything I/you/we associate with the sound of the MotorCity in the mid sixties. No guessing as to who did the original version either the writer credits tell us all we need to know. If you’ve never heard this version before sit back and fasten your safety belt. Wow! For once I’m nearly speechless. Once again Wow.

"House For Sale" first came out on her 'Free And In Love' album from 1976 which got both a US & UK outing. As the track never had a US release on 45 this means it must've first got air play as an album only track (though I've never seen, heard or read anything from anybody to either confirm or deny this). Then due to specialised demand from up north it came out in the UK later that year on a 7inch (but not in the US). The album mix wades in a shade over 4 minutes long and is a touch more mellow whereas me thinks they've beefed up the single mix more to sound better on the dance floor and trimmed it down to a more manageable 3 and a bit minutes.
