if august & deneen is an awful pop record, it was so damned right at the time. I happen to think they're black as well, in spite of the spurious sonny & cher rumours. soul sam used to thrash it to death in 1975. the record is a genuine classic in my opinion, much as the jewels is, a record also derided by some today. with the benefit of hindsight, it's so easy to knock these sounds, and by the way, I consider myself at least a part-time member of the soul police. surveillance/control is paramount, otherwise this would be the musical equivalent of fallujah. a good debate though... macca
  2. cheers dave. just looked again on manship. 50 quid, not 75... think I'll bide my time as you say... macca

fantastic record. that intro! clarion call to the dance floor. reminds me of sam for some reason... macca
  4. heard this the other day & was blown away. most of his R&B stuff on backbeat seems very cheap. manship had one a while back for 75 quid I think. 'one of his hardest'... can we take that to be 40 or 50 then? macca

precisely. there's clearly a market & you're right, you can't criticise the seller either. it makes me wish I had a few pressings to shift though!! I tried looking for a boot of lou pride recently & 25 quid was the asking price. I refuse to pay that sort of money, even a tenner seems excessive to me for a pressing. all these euphemisms make me smile too. it's the rare soul equivalent to being 'resettled in the east'... 2nd issue indeed! macca

a truly naff record. the torch also responsible I believe... macca

there's a simple & easy explanation as to the immense popularity of this record. torch goers deeply related to the sentiments expressed in the song's lyrics. the winter's chill of the 3 day week, & especially the 'gonna get my gear out' part. as plain as the nose on yer face really. next record? macca

https://cgi.ebay.com/Northern-Soul-Jimmy-Ra...1QQcmdZViewItem 2 stops short of dagenham quite frankly... macca
  9. hadn't planned to part with it ken, sorry! it's a real beaut of a record though. those backing vocals! for info, it's blue & white, marked 'bunky's choice'. picked it up on ebay for 45US. can't believe I'd ignored this sound years ago. it came to my attention from the kent 'cooler shakers' CD! I'll get one of them, I thought... macca
  10. anybody know current value on a DJ copy? cheers macca

sounds like he needs locking up. what's the point of going to a venue to be 'hostile', as the yanks would say? I mean, I'm not exactly into back slapping camaraderie either, but there's a limit. I can see it ending in tears. macca
  12. walter jackson's 'it's an uphill climb to the bottom' is 'intense' in a sort of tear jerky way... macca

  14. I think that was 'the sands of iwo-jima'. he certainly seems a nasty piece of work, judging by his feedback. I wouldn't touch someone like this with a bargepole ,ain't worth the grief when everything goes pear-shaped, is it? macca
  15. thank you pedro. is that 50 quid for the WD? cheers mac
  16. anybody know current value for the above. JM has an issue for 75 quid. are the WD's rarer? best, mac

would that 70's look have something to do with the towering RPC enjoyed by it's citizens, dwarfing that of it's esteemed & at times 'curmudgeonly' neighbour? macca

at the end of the day, I don't think it really matters where they hold the auditions. dublin is as good a place as any, but then again, so is barcelona, or rome, or paris for that matter. I imagine 'tecnical accomplishment' & 'celluloid appeal' will be high on the list of job pre-requisites. macca

let's face it, the irish have the 'cultural' edge regarding this question. compare the dynamics of irish dance to the stick wielding hey-nonny-nonny types to be seen prancing about on village greens & leafy courtyards across england during spring & summer. best, adrian j macmanus-o'loughlin-stanley-mccann

personally speaking, I'd ban the use of nouns & their derived adjectives... stormer stomper floater belter monster scorcher classic pounder floorpacker shuffler ender (this freudian in concept) oldie newie beat ballad crossover modern northern soul rare as hens' teeth R&B mover 100 mph choon/tune the expression 'out of new york, detroit, chicago etc' (we are NOT americans) john e vincent used to 'love us & leave us', but anything JEV said was alright by me... soul sam 'could never miss the beginning', so we were often entreated to a double dose of the church bells at the intro (don't like that word either) to margaret mandolph... back to lurking... macca I'd also ban the word lurker, it's a relative of loiterer...
  23. right. that narrows it down a bit. a mate here in spain is crazy about the record & not bothered if it's not an original. it seems he's more interested in the instrumental as well, so I guess he's gonna have buy the british black magic job. not my cup of tea at all, but then it's horses for courses I suppose... cheers macca
