  1. very nice thesis MB. where shall we install the ducking stool? M
  2. no problem with slade at all. it's just that when I hear rainy days & mondays, the red mist descends & I'm enveloped. nowt I can do about it.
  3. I'm sorry, but kiki dee's magic carpet ride to me sounds like proto carpenters & if I have one hate group it's them. horses for courses I guess.
  4. this is one of the great things about this music. different records mean different things to different people, don't they? it's funny how something inside of us draws the line at certain sounds. I hated all those british things like barry benson & helen shapiro, but most certainly hit the floor to the mystic moods, maybe because it sounded weird, trippy or whatever. some of these TV theme type things, whilst devoid of soul, gave a special atmosphere to a club like the casino, and as others have said, they belong to a time and a place. sometimes it's interesting to play them to remind you of how awful they were and how a complete abdication of sound judgement & good taste hurled you onto the dancefloor. I blame the drugs of course. one I used to really loath was patrick bradley - just one more chance. that record could have me leave an all-nighter if it came on late, such was the depression it caused. pure excrement.
  5. has dobie gray ever been considered a div's tune? it is for many people the essence of NS, whatever that is...
  6. if someone owed me 500 quid after 14 months then I'd initiate some form of legal action, whether you'd define that as a 'class action' or not is another question.
  7. supporting richard searling at an evening do in peterborough, before the fleet all-nighter. that was in 1978. I have to say that as an 18 year old, it was an honour & a privilege to be up there standing next to a thoroughly decent bloke like mr.searling, ferrying him pints of lager while he cracked out some stunning stuff. he also allowed me to fondle yvonne vernee in the plastic, an experience I was never to forget.
  8. PROVE IT TO ME - betty fykes & the passions - southbound I used to love this back in 1977. I associate it with Soul Sam & The St.Ives All Nighters. Is it something you see in boxes these days? M
  9. rightly or wrongly, many people consider motown to be bereft of soul. I'm sure that more than a few in memphis/chicago pooh-poohed the detroit set up too. jealousy? M
  10. no need to be snotty with the boy. just a few punctuation glitches that don't really obscure meaning... REPHRASED: "A nice tune I think. I have it on Liberty Records 66102 -1965 What do you lot think?" a great record paul. I first heard it on a kent album in the 80's. one of the good things about vinyl & cd releases acquainting & re-acquainting you top notch sounds. best, M
  11. anybody got a label scan? daft question I guess...
  12. I've seen loads of plain black issues out there, but very rarely the blue & white sexy VJ promos. A mate of mine considers it to be quite rare. what do you guys think? what kind of dosh are we talking about for a clean one?
  13. I love the mello souls, I think it's a wonderfully atmospheric tune, a great 'northern' record. but the vocals & arrangement, to me, are reminiscent of many psyche/garage/freakbeat sounds I've heard on my visits to weekenders over here. in fact I'm sure it'd go down a bomb on those 'pistas blancas' or 'white dancefloors'. on FW, it's strange but in 1978, the record didn't do anything for me, it was only in the late 80's & early 90's, usually beered up, that it began to tickle my fancy. that must say something about me or it, I guess... M
  14. thanks chaps. most helpful. will start looking.
  15. a while ago we had an essential LP thread going & mark bicknell, I think, mentioned one by the artistics. could somebody prod my memory please? M
  16. & what about the absolutely spiffing 'got you on my mind' on back beat?
  17. here's mine, for what it's worth, bought off a guy in the states last year. the same applies as regards feint/illegible stamp & crossed out matrix numbers.
  18. right. seems like I've got you all warbling & as I opened the post in the first place, I reserve the right to snap up the first copy (original), should some kind soul offer it at the right price. ;-) macca
  19. I personally think the kent stuff is second to none. one of my favourites is 'living the nightlife'. it kicks off with 'carlena' & then never lets up. some from the goldmine series would come in handy too, particularly the ones covering the scene's legendary venues, just to get the historical perspective. I would also do it strictly chronologically, starting with the birth of soul cd, by the time you get to the stafford years, you'll have gathered together a truly diverse musical collage of what this scene is all about. as other members have warned you, beware the road to vinyl servitude, once shackled, very few break free... ;-) good luck! M
  20. thanks chaps.
  21. if anyone out there has the picture sleeve of this record, I'd appreciate it if they could upload a scan of it. that way, the soul policeman inside of me can start negotiations with my alter ego for when it eventually turns up from the states.
  22. I believe this was an old mecca/cleethorpes spin. any info on labels/current value etc? cheers macca
  23. good looker was our bev. I'd like to see 'he's coming home' on video. M
  24. seem to remember that date on the uk brunswick general release of it... could be wrong of course... m
  25. my fairmount demo of big dee irwin's 'you really are together' has 1963 on it. this must be one the earliest 'northern type' sounds about. the adams apples wonderful 'don't take it out on this world' was also 1963 I think. anything pre-1960 would sit firmly in the R&B camp...
