  1. JM says: EX Excellent, small marks not audible. VG Scratches, marks & audible wear. I still think mine falls into the first category pete. minor scuffs, but no audible wear. in fact when I played DB after another record, I used to have to turn down the volume a bit, it was that loud. I'm confused.
  2. that's what I was going to say steve. we do get tetchy on here at times, don't we? in spain they say 'no es lo que dices, es como lo dices'. it's not what you say, it's how you say it. I will stick to my guns & thanks for your words of support matey. M
  3. two serious questions. 1. what's a spritzer? 2. are the uruguayans big cheese pervs? I knew they liked their beef...
  4. There'll always be people who take the piss. I bought the record as EX, which is 'used but not abused' in my book, you know, minor scuffs, but no ticks or pops or cue in burn etc; This record plays perfecty, very loud & very clear, just like my conscience right now. I'll be delighted to refund him, if & when I get my record back, & in the same condition I sent it in. I'm a good all-round egg, people have even told me so... M
  5. true. I used to scratch my initials AJM in the deadwax. there's a few of them out there.
  6. should be easy to identify with that buckin' great drill hole.
  7. I ain't going for that. I'd rather have the record back, didn't want to sell the bugger in the first place! I included a scan, but of the record was in a white sleeve. I don't think one can discern any possible scratches with the kind photos that one uploads to ebay, unless it's 300ppi, jobbie. won't get fooled again though. are england playing our german cousins tonight then? that's my alter ego, speaking cos my surname is hardly english, to be sure... best, mac. p.s. hadn't thought of the 'it's not my 45' scenario. that's really got me down.
  8. I've just sold, via Ebay, an EX condition Doug Banks on Argo to a guy in Germany for 75 quid. He's just emailed me to tell me there are three big scratches on it & I know for a fact there aren't. The tone of his missive was slightly stroppy 'are you trying to cheat me' etc; I replied offering to refund his money including his costs in returning it to me. Am I gonna get my record back? Is it going to be dog-fight between me & Hans with me ending up with negative feedback after 6 years of spotlessly clean & enjoyable Ebay selling? I'm fearing the worst for some reason. Mac. p.s. I bought it as EX off a guy on here & I'm scrupulously careful with my records. Why do I smell a rat?
  9. In Spain, those of us (the majority) that live in flats have things called buzones or mailboxes. Not the American bird box type, but a wall of slots. On any given morning, you call the lift & head down to the lobby. You open your buz³n & there it is, the brown package you've been so eagerly waiting for. Sometimes, there maybe another, adding to the general excitement & buzz. All plans to go to the bank, do the shopping, meet friends for a beer etc go out the window. You call the lift & head back to your flat, sometimes not even closing the door behind you. Stanley knife in hand, you feverishly open the mailer to check its contents. You then pop the record on the decks & hear that thumping intro, you shout yes & start fidgeting, maybe the odd clap, but not necessarily moving away from your deck. after this ritual is complete, you calmly file the record away & go about your business as if nothing had happened. "Sorry I'm late guys, but you just wouldn't be able to grasp it if I told you why." A NS high? I think so. Can anybody else out there report this worrying condition?
  10. I never saw the play but would have gone, given the chance. You don't have to be a luvvie to enjoy good theatre. The signed photo of DP, with the added 'confetti' of our mustachioed heroes, plus VIP suite, pizza & champers, I think, is a bit on the tawdry side. but as with all things, whatever gets you through the night. NS 2007? I don't really care for this sort of material & the only new releases I buy are Bob Dylan's. I'm a strange animal I guess.
  11. My fastest delivery was a 45 posted in NYC on Friday & arriving on Tuesday. Normally 7-10 days. Of course, some US dealers use the 9/11 argument for any delay that might occur.
  12. old dears & single mums as caf patrons? the old country is definitely going to the dogs then. mighty glad I don't live there anymore.
  13. I didn't have to pay a single centimo of a euro to meet dean. he was having coffee on a terrace near the hotel I was staying at in madrid. I just walked up to him, stanley style, & said mr. parrish I presume. the promotors david & sergio are friends, so we all went for lunch & later dinner together. we then introduced him to the delights of boquerones (spanish pickled anchovies). we knocked back plenty of sherbet & he regaled us with stories about the early new york scene, with me interpreting where necessary. it was wonderful. dean posed for all & sundry that day & night, signing t-shirts, photos, record sleeves, parts of bodies etc; a gentleman of the highest calibre & a stonking performer to boot. this photo cost bugger all.
  14. thanks for your replies chaps. some LC fan I am! Didn't even notice it wasn't her...
  15. s'truth just listened to don gardner for the first time in ages. what a blinding track! certain songs grab you immediately & this was one of them. the much vaunted cecil washington & mr.soul grew on me gradually, but DG was heart attack inducing stuff for me from the very time I heard it. apart from being a bonafide cod cutter (spanish for someone who's in control, a mover & shaker), don ricardo also happens to be a thoroughly likeable chap. when I was a wide-eyed collector late 78, I had the honour of supporting him at a peterborough soul night, when the old gaff wasn't the laughing stock of the scene. I gladly ferried him pints of lager that night, standing next to him ,watching him weave his magic spell. a wonderful bloke. I can say much the same for mr. barnfather. another cod cutter extraordinaire. I think we've already had a let's honour sam thread though...
  16. do weekenders count? If they do, it was madrid in may. up all night friday, a superb boozy lunch saturday followed by a well-earned siesta & then up all night again. I don't actually 'need' them. I choose to go. it's a social thing I guess; meeting new people, hooking up with old friends, talking records, hearing new stuff. all kinds of reasons really. my next all-nighter will be valencia in october, which promises to be a cracking event. the home of the paella & quality rare soul. what a wonderful combination! I also did the luanco S.O.U.L. weekender in march, with soul sam & steveG behind the decks. that was a memorable weekend in all senses of the word. I don't do many, it's more quality than quantity in my case. you should check one out paul, you know it's in your blood mate. cheers, M
  17. I was listening to this today, being rather partial to the lady. it sounds like a demo/rehearsal to me. anybody know the story behind it?

  20. Paul bought it, Tony. At a bargain I'd say.
  21. s'truth, so long? why's that then? its soul credentials are admittedly a bit thin on the ground but its 'northern' credentials, as a white philly pop stomper and former floorpacking monster are impeccable, if I might say so. it bears all the hallmarks, doesn't it? the requisite girly hey, hey, hey and vibraphone climax, signalling the moment for mass backdropping. was this a russ winstanley discovery by any chance? it seems like his kind of sound, but then again so was the timeless 'you didn't say a word'. far too many revisionists about, perhaps? this type of debate is right up your street too, isn't it Pete?
  22. I appreciate your bumping my post too Pedro. Gracias, Mac

  24. to be fair pete, sweeney did use the word predominantly which obviously doesn't mean exclusively. dean told me in madrid that one of the great honours of his life was being told by ben e king that he was a fantastic soul singer, the other great honour was being able to sit in on an R&B jam session with the young jimmy james, later to become jimi hendrix. both gentlemen were decidedly black, dean, as we all know, is decidedly white. dean has earned his laurels. frank? well, frank is frank. & as dylan said in the sleeve notes to JWH, the key is frank. sadly, my feet tap as much to hip teens as they do to determination. fetch me a quack...
