  1. This thread is living proof that there's more to life than Northern Soul & The Carstairs.
  2. I suppose 'odd' is an understatement. I was going to say that she reminded me of some the glue-sniffing urchins you find hanging around the gateway of india in bombay, but thought it too strong.
  3. Nice detective work Malc. Extremely odd photo of Miss Ross I might add...
  4. if you listen to 'someday we'll be together', you can hear the same backing vocal, quite a deep voice. anybody know whose voice that is? I quite likme the version, clavinet & miss ross included. some nice guitar work too. soooo Motown too.
  5. Nobody, absolutely nobody, questioned the validity of this record in 1976/7, even though it was common knowledge that it was a 'euro release'. Why is it now, some of the sage crown contingent (senior druids if you like), choose to condemn the record? As Bri says, it's a perfectly creditable version. I don't think it sounds that different (i.e. it's virtually indistinguishable) from the Velvelettes. Kenny Burrell introduced it with hushed reverence at the 100 Club and the dance floor responded in kind. It's also a known fact that 100 clubbers are more discerning with their Soul than most other club patrons. Where's my coat?
  6. I associate it with Soul Sam. A very, very big record in 1977. The last tiem I heard it was at the !00 Club two years, played by Kenny Burrell. It brings back fond memories for me, fetuccini Soul or not.
  7. One has to admit that mix is shite though. I'd love to hear it mixed properly.
  8. Apparently SB knew nothing of the recording. Tremendous record. I sorely miss my Capitol demo. :-(
  9. While it's never been a secret that The Beatles were R&B/Soul fans, I would have thought Agent OO Soul would have been a bit obscure for him. He seems to have been an R&B nut as well, judging by the presence Derek Martin's excellent 'Daddy Rolling Stone. Good old John!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon%27s_jukebox
  10. Yes, Danny Daniels. One of those that didn't have to rely on a gimnastic style to win. A phenomenal dancer. He won the dance comp (& 100 quid) at Wigan's 2nd Anniversary & spent the rest of the night 'protected' by the Peterborough crowd from prowling wolves. Wigan could be very heavy at times, couldn't it?
  11. Can't say I've ever paid the slightest attention to this kind of stuff before. Her vocal style is portentous indeed, just wondering what the result be if she went to Dap-Tone. :-) Thanks for introducing my ears to something different Barry!
  12. My memory is generally elephantine, the photo was taken with my camera (by Spike), I'm also from Stanground, & I'm very happy that Peterborough is doing well on the Soul front, but a while back, things did go a bit pear-shaped, didn't they? Lot's of public squabbling between promotors/punters, it all got very undignified. I may be wrong of course. :-) M p.s. I'm also told the Fleet sessions are doing their bit. ;-)
  13. Your 'bags' always erred on the conservative side, if I remember rightly, Mr Smith. This photo was taken on the 2nd of September 1977 in Peterborough Bus Station, shortly before boarding that 4pm train to up to Wigan. Our 'bags', as it were, were bespoke, Montague Burton, Tailors of Repute, Bridge Street Peterborough, when the town still hung on to some shred of credibilty on the Soul Scene. Recent fishy goings on, on the North Bank of the Nene, I'm told, have helped restore some of that credibility, gracias a Di³s. Good afternoon, I'm off for a curry at the Taj Mahal, next to the Deportivo Riazor Stadium in La Coru±a, M
  14. your german is probably just as amusing pikey! :-)
  15. Nice one Kev. You're lucky to have been that close mate.
  16. Bruce Springsteen cut an album in 1982 with Gary US Bonds, with Chuck Jackson helping on a few tracks. The album sold well in the UK if I remember well.
  17. From today's Independent. https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertai...-63-967411.html
  18. Don't limit yourself to the Russian girlies Mossy!
  19. Christ almighty, Lee David sounds fabulous. The essence of it (there are a lot of them, I know) I reckon.
  20. Hair standing on the back of the neck listening to it again after all these years. Thanks guys!! Don't think I can justify putting it on me shopping list though. :-( Those horns are bit mariach, no? M
  21. I remember this former monster being booted in the mid 70's. There's no refo clip on here. Has it appeared on any KENT compilations & what are originals going for these days. Great memories of Gwen & Ray. Reminds me of packed dancefloors & as one of those sounds that used to get applause before applauding records became common place.
  22. One thing that is true, the advent of Internet has meant that there are loads more people chasing the sounds today. I know of Spanish people that have undertaken record finding trips to the States. Same goes for the Germans, Scandos, Italians & French. It's no longer the preserve of eccentric brits. :-)
  23. I think I'm right in saying that Brian Epstein was instrumental in bringing them over for their all conquering 65 tour of Britain. He told the press that they were the best group in the world after his Fab Four (he had to say that I guess). Baby I Need Your Lovin' was quoted as his fave track. Many say that for Epstein, the 'baby' in the song was Lennon. Levi's vocals in the unrequited/unattainable love songs are some of the most moving things ever committed to vinyl. The reaction to his death on here & other forums is entirely fitting. I deeply felt the loss of Marvin Gaye, but it's nothing like this.
