  1. Fab Darryl, just fab. Keep 'em coming!! Gracias! Mac.
  2. Christ almighty! There are people rightly fired up on another sub-forum about a possible 3rd copy of Frank Wilson, but I think stuff like this is equally enthralling. Tonite we've found out, from the artist himself, that there's an alternative vocal take plus instrumental to one of the scene's bonafide classics. It'd make a wonderful 7" vinyl release guys.
  3. Form an an orderly queue, it's a British thing. Come on Darryl, let's see those 1969 shots!
  4. I think this is wonderful, full stop. Soulful Detroit has some artists who pop in from time to time, Spyder Turner springs to mind. It'd be wonderful to have people like Billy & Ray on here (the more the merrier!) as they could offer us so much insight into the recording process, with stories, anecdotes etc. The records might not 'have done much' in their country of origin but they certainly took on a new dimension in the UK. Sometimes, as collectors, I think we tend to overlook the huge debt we owe to the artists. Darryl: NI&CI came to be played in the UK because prominent club DJs like Ian Levine went on record hunting trips to the States in the early 70's. Anything that looked likely to fit the bill, i.e. label, writer/producer credits, that driving beat etc was eagerly snapped up, often for a dollar or less, & brought back to the UK to be plugged at the major venues of the day. Many of these achieved that 'monster status' among dancers & collectors. Am I right guys?
  5. Just goes to show, doesn't it? The talk of unreleased material & photos has me salivating. :-) I'm very partial to Soul ballads too. It ain't only about shakin' yer ass, as Marvin Gaye would have said... Wonder what Dave Godin would make of all this? :-) How could we walk Darryl through the uploading process?
  6. That would have been a hot cakes job, unlike some of the schlock that PYE released in that series. Yes, I know there was top drawer stuff too, but who wouldn't have preferred Darryl Stewart to The Fugitives or The Sha-Na-Netts, for example? Here's the album that most of us heard Name It & Claim It on for the first time, track 2, no less. Wasn't there a re-release of this on Sanctuary, with bonus tracks?
  7. Welcome aboard Darryl. I echo Sunnysoul's words regarding promotional photos, that kind of stuff would be fabulous. The recording studio/session info is also much appreciated as it helps us build up a picture of how these wonderful records records came together in the first place. There have been a number of Scepter/Wand CD compilations over the years, & none of them would have been complete without Name It & Claim It. Musicor also enjoys legendary status on this scene. I know it was all a long time ago, but please do tell us more! :-) Best, Mac. p.s. I think it should be us that are thanking you for the memories!! :-)
  8. I only have pleasant memories of his sets from the mid 70's, except perhaps for 'Baby Sugar I Love You', which is most definitely not a white pop sound. Didn't Tony Cummings (an unfortunate surname) play a large part in this 'black legend' surrounding Sam, with weekly hatchet jobs in Black Music? Sam has always been the man for me.
  9. I've been in touch with the man via Youtube & told him people on here would love to hear from him. He said that his son had drawn his attention to Name It & Claim It being on Youtube, & had absolutely no idea of the record's popularity on the scene. When I bought the Wand/Scepter compilation that Ian Levine put together this was one track that I played over & over. I asked him if he got to record other material & he replied he did, that they were mostly ballads. He also said he'd be sure to visit Soul Source to find out more about his role in the massive jigsaw puzzle that is the NS scene (the jigsaw bit is mine) :-)
  10. My friends think I'm crazy to be lovin' you!! ">
  11. It's coming together chaps, keep on pushin'. The producer Tom Wilson is long since departed.
  12. Going back to the Charades, fellow stable mate Dean Courtney shed some light on them in an interview, mentioning a John T Mac Jnr. Did this turn out to be a dead end?
  13. Try as I might, I can't see anything adulatory or obsequious about Dave Moore's questions. Ian, as the Charades are such a part of your musical landscape, did you try to locate them for your SWONS project? M
  14. 1.) Is Bob Trotter back on the scene? 2) The way you've worded your post it would appear that most people connected to the Northern scene are twats. 3) I think that's a bit strong.
  15. Funny how this thread has descended into a traditional northern vs R&B spat. I was looking at a playlist for the Twisted Wheel the other day. Way before my time, I was 11 when it closed. I must admit I'm far more inclined to listen to gritty blues orientated R&B than Spiral Staircase, which I heard at Wigan around 1977. At Notts Palais once, I think I even heard a version of God Only Knows. This was just as depressing as TEF must sound to Rod's ears. Little Hank, Jimmy McCracklin, Slim Harpo, Phil Upchurch, Bobby Parker etc, etc fit more into the scheme of things, FOR ME, than white pop 4x4 Motown soundalike stompers so commonly heard at all-nighters back then. I think it's about taste, not about what's supposedly right & wrong musically, but then again what do I know, I listen to Roscoe Holcomb in the dark.
  16. Could anybody point me to a less than playable copy of this where the sleeve might be in reasonable condition? Cheers, M Sorry chaps, just realised I've stuck it in the wrong forum.
  17. The first records to make my ears prick up were The Isley Brothers 'Tell me It's Just A Rumour Baby', Tony Clarke 'Landslide' & The Furys 'I'm Satisfied With You'. That must have been 1973. Hitherto, it was Philly stuff like the O' Jays, Intruders & the excellent Motown chartbusters etc; If you were open min ded, it seemed like the natural direction to go in. Most of the Funk stuff like The Ohio Players, War, James Brown left me pretty cold. 1974 was the key year in my NS education. I pretty much liked everything that was thrown at me. Our Youth Club was the church & Paul Donnelly, Smudge Smith & Gary Spencer the priests. Exciting times.
  18. January 10th, according to their Myspace. https://www.myspace.com/theboilerclub
  19. I think it was either Ray Charles that said it would have been disrespectful to have asked her to sing secular music. A tremendous performer with a voice that could break glass. Without Mahalia there would have been no Aretha, & countless other gospel singers that made the transition to Soul. I love her 'Walk In Jerusalem'.
  20. Executive producer means that she paid for it, doesn't it? I think the young peroxide Etta James was quite tasty, in a feisty sort of way. Bouncy is a huge talent too. I just don't like her material. Put her in Willie Mitchell's hands (or mine) I say...
  21. I agree it's a time & place thing, same goes for Phil Coulter & The Baja Marimba Band. Massive records. & if the smarties got the better of you, you'd hit the floor with the rest of them. This is a confession. Oh' lord...
  22. Anybody remember John Vincent's sleeves? Very cool. Macca p.s. Gazman, I used to get an Oor Wullie or The Broons annual every year for Christmas. Can't imagine a Christmas without them. :-)
