  1. You should think about getting over to continental Europe once in a while, Sweden, Germany, Italy and Spain all having thriving scenes with a generally younger crowd, i.e. 25-40. Plus, there are great DJs and great venues... and other attractions. ;-)
  2. Nice one Paul. Must have been fun remixing/remastering it. The flip sounds seriously powerful too.
  3. Really suprised to see helen shapiro in there. I always associate it with the dreadful british label pop boom of 1978 by the likes of nev wherry and keith minshull.
  4. So for once Ian Levine was pipped at the post. I once read that Willie Hutch was a Mecca premier for the LRO side. Obviously not.
  5. Patti & the Emblems - I'm gonna love you a long, long time and The Apollas Mr. Creator are good examples I think...
  6. Blue Sharks, a youth club tune? I'll always associate it with Soul Sam and the main hall at St.Ives. Westbound Nº 9 is indeed a great tune and I still get transported to our youthclub circa 74 when I hear things like The Poppies 'He's Got Real Love', Lee Andrews & The Hearts 'I've Had It' and Faye Ross 'Faith Hope & Trust'. I wouldn't know if they see much action at Oldies nights though.
  7. boogie with your baby has hardly returned to obscurity, has it?
  8. Very surprised to hear Bill Brandon & Lorraine Johnson is a forgotten record. The Patrick Bradley, I hope, will remain buried.
  9. I have a mate in Spain that makes extremely good hand made cases, don't know whether he'd be able to do a 100 though, then there's the shipping factor. I'd personally recommend him. Mac p.s. My mate's are similar to the swan flight cases Dave mentions, so they're probably not quite what you're looking for.
  10. Reg, when we went to last year's December Movin' On it was bloody cold in Barcelona, only around 6ºC, so not all of Spain swelters, even in summertime.
  11. Agreed Peter. I attended last year's Movin' On December session and enjoyed the first day/night immensely. Unfortunately, I got sick on the Saturday and missed the rest of the weekend, which was a real putada as they say here. We'll be back again this year though, and with Butch, Sam, Edu, Cris and the rest of the guys on the decks, it promises to be memorable. So, the moral of the story is that if you want to brave the culture and do 'the Continent', get yourselves on Facebook.
  12. Heard lots about the 'warm coast' mate, and all good things. One fine day!
  13. I think Stevie is referring to a particular 'sun, sand, sea and soul' experience, after all Valencia is on the coast and its cultural attractions are many and wonderful. Same can be said for Barcelona, Gij³n and Bilbao. The Costa del Sol has been been mentioned, I personally loath the place but if someone put on an event in Malaga, I'd attend it, as it's a vibrant city and one wouldn't be banged up in a hotel on a stretch of hideous coastline catering exclusively to... British and Irish piss artists. Horses and courses, obviously...
  14. a fascinating read chaps. one can learn so much here, even after 30 odd years of soul talk.
  15. The mic use thing has been throughly wrung out on here before. I grew up with it, so when it's there, it doesn't bug me, unless they're mumblers or ranters of course. I can't stand people prattling over intros nightclub style and I've seen it from one of the UK scene's most notable jocks and not that long ago.
  16. "Club Classics" is another one... That's such a wide church that you could play almost anything. Handbaggers is a bit uncharitable, as I always think of my sister, who at nearly 60, is every inch a Soul fan and has some great records, it's just that they're not Leon Haywood and The Artistics , that's all. Is there a male version of a handbagger?
  17. For those that might think it code, B&D = Bull & Dolphin, Lower Bridge Street.
  18. must have read this a dozen times but it still puts a smile on my boat. I was there at the birth of the Phoenix, I'm proud to say. When things moved onto the Fleet in 1978, it wasn't quite the same as most of us had already transferred our allegiance to St.Ives by early 77. Plus the Fleet was, for a period, plagued by yobs preying on Soul folk for some reason. Verballing in those warm brick kilns was always interesting though.
  19. I guess Philomena is talking strictly about the UK scene as she knows it and clearly hasn't travelled beyond Blighty's shores in pursuit of Soul.
  20. Cheers Paul. Just bought the CD from her website and sent friend request on Facebook. What a nice way to start the day!!
  21. This is wonderful news. I thought Debbie Taylor was irretrievably lost to us, musically speaking. Well done Yogi and the rest of the guys for securing this UK appearance. What's the gen on this.? When did she decide to return to the music biz?
