  1. I think I'm close to Mikey's opinion on this one......confused. Situation doesn't look good for Kev Roberts, so why would he issue these details? It sort of defies logic. Col. Mikey its not your milk they are after, its the fridge magnets. I recently sold an owl shaped 'Northern Noise" magnet for £200.

    1. In Wigan days it was 90% The Beat 10% The Soul These days, its still the same Northern Soul scene, but now its 90% The Soul, 10% The Beat. 2. Northern Soul & golf. Bet you've never seen the two in the same sentence before. Personally I'm not sure that they should ever be so placed. I've never seen golf mentioned on here before & I think it may be the antithesis of northern soul. I should admit to a personal interest here......I dislike golf, golfers & golf clubs. Maybe golf is too much for my socialist, working class roots to bear, whereas Northern soul eases the pain. 3. Attended 100 Club anniv. recently and watched Keb Darge (who I don't know) doing some amazing acrobatic dancing. The man is as fit as a fiddle.Hanging around him for periods of time were fully paid up members of the Northern Soul soul police. People who I know abhor anybody wearing a vest. Something to do with too much flesh being shown & 70s northern fashion trends. Keb had dispensed with all his clothes up top, but the same people who can't stand people wearing a vest were fawning all over him. Is that a paradox or just plain old double standards? Feel free to either add, agree or argue. Col
  3. Always like to add 'Sherry & The Trifles' myself

    Q. Do you know what I miss about SS these days? Ans. The short but very happy period when you were banned.

Apologies if already been covered but check out https://www.djhistory.com/ Amongst other things there is some fairly lengthy interviews with a few of our own.... Ian Levine, Ian Dewhirst & 'Farmer' Carl Dene Happy reading.
  6. Well done Shane. I'm sure its been a bit of a thankless task at times. Take a bow
  7. Personal insults are out of order. I had the courtesy to give you a straight reply to your question, whereas you chose not to reply to mine. No wish to PM you & no real wish to make further posts. I have drawn my own conclusion from this, as others probably have too.
  8. So if this had happened to you, you would have flagged it up like SITC01 Yes or No?
  9. No. I don't have any issues with him. Thanks to this thread I am forewarned about doing any future business with him. I have more of an issue with your flippant post "Ah the old mob mentality, that's how to make a new member feel welcome alright" Smiley or no smiley. If you felt that a new member had ripped you off, then offered goods for sale on here, what would your response have been?
  10. Pot, kettle, black. A number of your posts on here have concerned you getting ripped off by dealers/sellers. No way would you make allowance just because somebody had joined SS. When your average guy joins SS he is invariably welcomed. If ,however, people bring lots of baggage to the party, thats another story.

Cheers for that, its probabbly about 35 miles from me (same sort of distance as Eastleigh also on thatr night). Been to some real friendly dos in S.London (namely Tooting & Morden) but they both struggled with low attendances. Hope it works out at Plumstead. Col.

Different problem down south. I couldn't find a venue within 30 miles last night.
  13. Good work.....it was Princess
  14. Must have been a subsequent tour then. Capital Radio ran a sort of talent contest for the general public and the result was.....a bit fixed. Tell you tomorrow
  15. That would have been a good choice, even inspired. Always thought Jake Graham could have done better with the right material.
  16. Quality! Any one remember who Cherelle's replacement was for the UK tour? 5 points up for grabs.
  17. By 1985 I'd already cut the string good & proper. I landed back in 1979 where luckily for me they still played with real instruments. Col. ps the vocal was sort of ok

Which dealers consistently offer records at the most reasonable prices ie prices to sell quickly? Assuming of course that service & record grading are good. Are you more likey to get a record cheaper on one dealers auction site than another? Most of the chat on here about auction prices often refers to John Manships. I was wondering if maybe people ignored others like for example Pat Bradys and you were more likely to pick uo a 'bargain' there? Col. As a foot note I was also wondering how many people make a full time (or at least its their primary source of income) from buying & selling rare soul / northern soul? 10-20?

It brightened up (for me anyway) a rather dull Monday night. Although looking at the poll results so far I expect to be sulking for the next couple of days at least. I've cheered myself up a little by playing Dustys motownesque 'Go ahead on' Its the B side to 'All I see is you' Its a cheap record but I'm told recently got a few spins covered up. Funny old game.

Some really good replies.......& the usual waffle from Moldie. To be honest, I haven't heard most of the Smokey tracks mentioned & would appreciate any sound files posted. Col ps I am taking comfort though from the fact that Dustys vote had DOUBLED overnight.

It looks a bit out of character for you. Cant believe results so far. The real soul fans have obviously gone to bed & will vote tomorrow.

Following on from the recent Smokey life time 'achievement' thread I would like to put forward an alternative point of view, that he really wasn't much of a soul singer. In fact I'd say he sings more like a 10 year old girl. If you had a soul scale with Bobby Womack at one end of the scale and a 10 year old girl at the other end, I would say that Smokey was closer to the girl than to Bobby Womack. I'm not saying that he is without talent. Bob Dylan described him as America's greatest living poet. But that probably says more about the poor state of American literature. I've never been overly enamored with Dusty's voice but she has a amazingly powerful delivery that at times can often sounds really soulful. Whats It Gonna Be? Col ps Vote Dusty
