I've had a tape for many years with Emanual Laskey-Don't Lead Me On Baby, a sound that I realy love. Recently I bought a CD "Someday, The Cream Of Northern Soul" with it on. It sounds quite different, particularly the backing. Are there two versions. It was quite disappointing. A bit like buying a KRL CD to find that they are all re recordings. Paul
  2. Linda Jones-I Just Can't Live My Life Jodi Mathis-Don't You Care Anymore Spyder Turner-Just Can't Make It Anymore To me real Northern and Soulful. I'm sorry but the beat ballad type thing can be more soulful than old style northern but it doesn't cut it for me on a night out. Paul

Perhaps I shouldn't have gone to Wigan on the Saturday before my maths O level on the monday morning. I could only ever work out that they were 10p each if they were 10 for a quid!
  4. I'll spin it tonight to see(hear?) Cheers Paul
  5. Mine has the delta 65c-9290, the yellow/white on both sides with perfect labels, AT in the runout, but compared to the disc above, where the surface curves down towards the centre hole, on mine it is more at an angle. The lable is mat and the disc is Styrene(grey edge)?. I always thought it to be original. But I mainly remember the boots with the shiney bubbled labels in about 75. I'm confused.
  6. Not Jerry then

There were a few goodish teen movies released in the 80's like Shag and Dance party. Mainly featureing beach music and tracks like Monkey Time & It will Stand. Crap movies reasonable music. I quite enjoyed Hairspray as well(the movie, not the grooming product)
  8. Oh no not another horse racing thread

Pay a few quid more and you could afford the motown original so then you could play it out without worry.

Wouldn't it involve buying Frank Wilson & the Snake? Surely a non starter for many people on here.!

    God Knows why!

You want to get Cilla Sings A Rainbow LP with her versions of Real Thing, Everything I touch Turns To Tears, Lovers Concerto etc. All classics and distinctly nasal in the vocal.
  13. Perhaps he will have the last laugh with:- Rags To Riches-Donald (S)Height
  14. I know Wigan tends to get the blame for a lot that is bad about the scene, but I think you will find that the black glove thing goes back to the Wheel days. Dave Godin refers to it in one of his visit reports.
  15. I got the Detroit Sound Album with Jumpin' At The Go Go on it in Woolworths in Jacksonville in 1978, but I think it would be a long shot to go there!
  16. Surely the obvious one is the Tramps "Penguin At The Big Apple"
  17. Absolutely Brillant
  18. Good one Dayo, but on the version by the Essex didn't they change it to "Transistor Radio", or have I lost more brain cells than I thought?
  19. Following on from the Les Dawson thread, and Tony Smiths cheese fetish?. What in everyones opinion was the cheesiest sound played on the scene. I'll start off with Sammy Davis Junior "You Can Count On Me"
  20. Perhaps in the point number 10 about having no history, BB means that if you win the lottery, buy a load of Shrine, etc rareities it would not make you a DJ. If you don't have a history on the scene, you will soon find out that playing a bunch a rare sounds one after the other will not make a happy bunch of punters and will not turn you into a "Northern/rare" Soul expert.
  21. This opens up a whole new world of exclusive one-offs and instrumentals. Remember the 70s when rumour had it that Soussan had a machine to wipe the vocals off records? when he really had got hold of the backing tracks. Could this be the new big discussion thread? When is someone going to do the Les Dawson Instrumental!? I once played "People That's Why" by Pinky & Perky- great dancer, better than Idle Few. Was actually PJ Proby off the Enigma LP played at 45. That was the limit of my sound manipulation. I couldn't figure out who to cover the Sapphires Gonna Be A big Thing played at 33 up as!
  22. If the scene was originals only, then would everyone be sick to death of Frank Wilson with only 2(?) copies?. Also quite often I have heard that owners of the one offs "cut an acetate" for DJs. Sorry but they used to be called EMIdiscs and they were illegal bootlegs, or is this a selective originals only scene?
  23. Issues also as Soloman King
  24. No, there is a Devon farm connection though, the furniture ad is Katie Manure, Joss Stone used to do backing vocals with the Worzels until she did her first "Western Soul" record, a cover of Hay Sah Lo Neigh, the vocal to "Tractor Your Mind"......er I think!
  25. I think that f I managed Joss Stone, then I wouldn't be able to stop smiling for months... fnarr fnarr!
