  1. I think the idea was to unite the UK soul scene, both Northern and "southern". I don't think we ever go to the stage of Russ Winstanley sharing a stage with Chris Hill. Weren't the first Yate nights under the Banner of the Intercity Soul Club? I remember them putting on an allnighter in Plymouth while I was under basic Naval Training, and I think I stayed awake allnight in sympathy.!! Paul
  2. Remember "Manys The Slip" from the Mecca/Burnley Alldayers when Levine came back from the states with it claiming it was the vocal to Bok To Bach! Paul
  3. Adding to the original thread though. How about Wombat "I'm Gettin' On Life" I remember Chris Bloor from St Helens apparently having one of the only copies at the time. Wouldn't play that again!
  4. At the weekend I bought a cut price CD that had a couple of tracks that I didn't have(on CD). The main reason for buying it was, yes, you got it The Cherry People . and the CD was only £2.99. Also another version of the Sapphires Slow Fizz with alternative lyrics, what's the story? I hadn't heard it before. Paul
  5. Is that the original, if so surely it can be played out DON'T LOOK ETHEL!
  6. Apparently accapella cover versions by immediate relatives are allowed as long as it is a cover version of the original!
  7. Back in the early 70s I had the Gene Chandler There Was A Time album, and as you do looked through the other tracks for "Northern" type sounds. I loved "Bet You Never Thought", but thought it was a bit swingining Sinatra ish until I heard it out and it certainly does work. What other sounds would fit into the mould(apart from obvious supper club type things like Gene McDaniels Point Of No Return) I'll start off with the above and add The Scientists of Soul-Be's That a Way Sometime. Any others? Paul
  8. When the album was released, it was quite in demand for the track "Where Is The Love" which was picked up by Levine at the Mecca. I think that "Where is The Love" was released as The folow up to "Shoorah, ShooraH". Ah, the days when you could hear some of the same tracks in the Highland room that they played downstairs in the divs room. What a difference 30 years makes! Paul
  9. Sure the Tams did a version of it also. Paul
  10. "Too Late" Williams & Watson
  11. The other side, "Magic Melody" is also pretty good in a sweet soul sorta way. Reminds me a bit of the Mylestones "Sexy Lady" Paul
  12. Last night on "The City Gardner" they played Billy Stewart "Secret Love". They usually have a reasonable soundtrack to it. Oh and War "Lowrider". I keep meaning to get a copy of Billy Stewart "Teaches Old Standards New Tricks" It must be an essential album. Paul
  13. Also a good version of "Am I The Same Girl" and I also love her version of "Every Day I Have To Cry". Paul
  14. Sorry, but at Clarence St Tech there were a fair share of knuckledraggers and for a Southport Woollyback it could get a bit dangerous at times. Sorry for any offence to well adjusted individuals from the pool. Anyway, "Footsee Yeh, de de de de" etc
  15. Well, one is lower than the other
  16. At the time it aired, I was an apprentice at Southport, but had to go to Liverpool once a week for day release. There were some scouse lunatics around at Tech and when the lads on my course told one of the maniacs that I could do the Footsee, he insisted that I did it. I didn't loose my bottle though, I was not going to degrade myself without the aid of pharmaceuticals for any scouse inbred! and I didn't get a pasting . The fact that it was also a Monday, so I was probably on a major downer didn't help though. Paul
  17. Didn't work for me either. Anyone think that Billy is just after the 1000 posts award? Paul
  18. Yeh Jethro was also on it for certain.
  19. If you have a look at for sale/wants section, the thread "Northern soul DVDs" in Dvd No. 3 Pete Smith has it for sale, it was called "Out On The Floor" I think that was the one. Paul
  20. "Kipper" Rimmer from Newton Le Willows and Anne Rogers from Standish/Shevington, were difinitely in it. There were some "auditions on one of the weekday sessions at the Casino, I think it was on a Wednesday night. Little did anyone know what an attrocity it would become. After Tony Blackburn on TOTP introduced them "performing a new dance called the Footsee" many of the dancers stayed away from the allnighters.
  21. Andre Crouch & the Disciples "Christian People" was an early Wigan spin I seem to remember. Paul
  22. Didn't it jump anyway?
  23. I thought it sounded a bit different, Somewhere I have a Barbara Lewis album with it on(also "someday we're gonna love again"), havn't played it for years. Didn't someone mention the Capitols version on here a few weeks ago? Also it was good to see the Teen Turbans on After Hours 3. Not the most soulful sound but a good happy singalonga dex type track!
  24. In the last series, in one episode it was northern instrumentals. They played Sliced Tomatoes, Bok To Bach and the Spy. Last night they also played Barbara Lewis "Hello Stranger" Linda Jones(I think) "Hypnotised" and I was racking my brains at the instrumental they played, which I hadn't heard for years and I'm sure it was "Trampoline" Spencer Daivis Group.
  25. Always loved the Brown Bombers track from when it was played by the Soul Spinners 4, local djs at Burscough Football Club in about 73. Also the Hamond Bros & Maggie was billed as Soul Over Easy. I know it came out on UK london in about 74/75. was it on USLe Cam, same as the Edie Robin vocal "There Must Be A Love Somewhere". By the way, was this a legit release? Paul
