  1. I'll try to look when I get home, doesn't ring any Belles though. Paul
  2. I bought all three when they came out. Must have been about 72. A good way to start collecting "Northern". I've still got them. Paul
  3. Should have been used to string him up. Oh I forgot, IMHO Paul
  4. Now come on Steve, the best gear in the world wouldn't make Gary Lewis sound good. I remember hearing scandal about His dad Jerry Lewis beating his kids. You could see his point. I Thought it was a pity it didn't stop Gary being a "musician"(and as for "This Diamond Ring")................. Paul
  5. Heard this a couple of times and loved it. Wouldn't buy it though, it was made after midnight on 31 Dec 1969 Anyone got a sound file? Paul
  6. Driving along yesterday listening to the radio and it was played, "Indiana Wants Me" R Dean Taylor. Not the worst but terrible. Paul
  7. Wasn't this covered up by Levine as the "Turkish Delights"? can't remember the c/u title though. Paul
  8. Although I had a preference for Motown and soul at the time I hadn't had the hair standing up on the back of the neck moment until I heard "Two Can Have A Party" Marvin & Tammi, off the Motown Disco Classics Vol 2(it was 1971 or 72 and I was about 14). Not the most soulful of tracks, but just the whole feeling of the sound did it for me and just stunned me. Paul
  9. I thought it might be that, it's just that I hadn't heard it before. Cheers Paul
  10. And I did hear it played at Wigan by Russ a couple of times in about 74/75. I always loved Sax On The Track by Mike & Ike. Haven't heard it for years though. Personally I love instrumentals as part of the scene. But I don't go out anymore so I am in it for the rose tinted nostalgia. Although it was my era, I certainly hated all the synthesizer instrumentals done by S Soussan. Paul
  11. Last week on Heartbeat they had a new state of the art police car on trial that was a D reg (1966 ish) and then played an early 70s track. I notice these things but it doesn't bother me anymore. I believe it is basically a period drama set in the "sixties" for entertainment value only, not for analysis by us anoraks. They also played the "Spy". Who was the "Hide & Seek" by? Paul
  12. I noticed when listening to the CD This is Northern Soul Vol 1(the motown one). Two tracks one after the other, to me, show a black pop singer and a soul singer. Diana Ross Singing "He's All I've Got" Followed by Gladys Knight singing "Just Walk In My Shoes". Ms Ross sings along with the tune, and our Gladys's voice makes the tune/melody. I realise that they are not difinative examples of the genres but just hearing them one after the other sort of explained it to me. Paul
  13. More exposure on mainstream telly last night. The City Gardner yet again with the re-recorded version of Frank Wilson. Such a treat for the FW fans out there. Paul
  14. No, I wasn't in uniform at the time
  15. Back around 78 while I was in the Navy, I did both cartilages in my knees doing a backdrop(I think to "There Was A Time") The Navy doctor prodded around and asked "how did you do this, football?". I replied "No, Dancing". He didn't ask any more questions, but there was a strange look on his face. Paul
  16. Isn't it about time that there was less politics in the rare soul scene Apart from that, one that isn't Northern, but US 60 garage is "Liar Liar" by the Castaways. Sums them all up really
  17. Whatever it is, Levine either played it or made it. Or it was Russ's uncle.
  18. Because I don't get around anymore, I don't know if various sounds have been resurected at some stage. Anyway one track I have always loved and didn't get the recognition it deserved(IMHO), probably because it isn't rare enough, is; "Be's That Way Sometime" Scientists Of Soul on Kashe. Just a good catchy song. Paul
  19. Saw them live along with Mac & Katie Kissoon at Edge Hill Colledge in Ormskirk. in about 75 ish. I must have been short of something to do that night. Paul
  20. Also There was the Feathers Version Of "Lost Summer Love" voc & inst on Bell. Turned it into some out & out pop record Paul
  21. Bity Mcleans Version of "It Keeps Raining" was pretty good(mmmm Bitty Bitty) Paul
  22. What worries me is when playing any of these out, which would be regarded as the original to allow only the real deal to be played. I for one would not like to pay to attend any soul do and find the DJ playing the non first pressing plant copy. Paul
  23. I agree Ady. But what I was trying to say was that it was that the small amount of pop stuff was accepted. It was just that mid term at Wigan they took the p*ss a lot. I think many people around the scene from its start to the present day are a bit selective about what is pop crap and what is acceptable. Personally(no pun), I loved Paul Anka "Can't Help Loving You" but hated Johnny Vanelli. And to this day there are loads of "white" records being accepted on the scene. The same can be said about '70s sounds also. Paul
  24. There is always a lot of conflict about what should or shouldn't be played on the scene particularly when it comes to "pop" stompers etc. In the early days of the Wheel etc there was allsorts played i.e Round Robin "Kick That Little Foot Sally Anne" . Generally the scene revolved around predominently "black" records of a soul or R&B style coupled with "white" sounds withe the appropriate beat or sound and all the punters was happy(I think). Then Dave Godin (RIP) with all the good intentions went to have a look at "The Northern Soul Scene". From this day on the it was labelled a Soul scene and the arguments started. Please discuss Paul PS I am predominantly a soul fan, but also there are many white pop tracks that have been played that I personally love. And others I hate!
  25. On the original thread of what should never have been played, anyone remember "Toody" by Angels one Five Paul
