As someone who attended some of the venues mentioned(i.e. not the Wheel Or the Torch), and do not attend todays venues(for personal reasons). I feel that the general concensus on this site is more anti oldies/Wigan etc and the politics really piss me off. I cannot comment on the scene as it is today, I am just glad that it still exists. But with all the genres within the "rare" Soul scene today there is something for everyone. If you don't like Oldies nights don't go to them. if you don't like modern or R & B don't go to those venues. Apart from the Wigan/Mecca thing in 75 people just went to Northern soul nights and got on with it and had a good time. Looking at the venue listings nowadays the scene as a whole appears to be very healthy, but reading various posts and criticisms on here everyone appears to have a go at everyone else. It is like the old funkateers possees in the 70s & 80s. In the "old" days we all read check out the north and went to Wigan & Mecca the real splits in the scene were meerly something in the mind of Tony Cummins in Black Music, which we all still bought anyway. We used to take the piss out of the general public in the glam rock discos and thought we were special because we know of a music they didn't know about. and we were special, and still are. We used to be Brothers & Sisters(perhaps that's why the arguments happen) Paul PS I agree heres to the next 30 years, but there is no future without a past.

Just walked into Ottakers book shop in Portsmouth an hour ago. Sufferin' City Johnny Copeland was on, so I stayed listening and an old ska track I didn't know came on. I walked up to the coffee bar and sat for a while and they played Hit & Run, California Montage, Landslide, Girl across the Street, With These Hands, interspersed with a couple more reggae/ska tracks and bizzarly Accidents will happen, Elvis Costello. I was going to ask about the music but in the end didn't, so I don't know if one of the staff brought a home compilation in or it was the shops. I could have stayed all afternoon Paul

"Share A Little Love" was played around mid to late '73 at Va Vas and early Wigan. There was also a version by the Isleys on one of the MFP cheapo albums Paul

I seem to think that it is actually a British recording, although it came out on the Okeh Album(that I have on Columbia). Maybe it says so on the sleeve notes. I know I read it somewhere. I'll check when I get home. Paul

Surely if peole want to play only the original out then in the case of JJ Barnes then it should be played off the Rare Stamps Album as it was when it was a big sound. Oh no, the other perrenial problem, should you play Album tracks?. Before it really mattered, then you could play the original US release, the original UK release(as mentioned earlier, usually rarer) or the original Album track. They were all the original imprint(I'm talking about original '60s issues). They were all usually pretty rare. Nowadays if it is not the original US then it is frowned upon! When did the music stop being the main thing? Paul

Don't actually remember string vests, but at one time a lot of people wore either a vest or T shirt with a sort of comic strip type of design that said "Dragonette" or something similar. I actually preferred the bowling shirt look with my 40" bags. Paul

Following on from Genes thread about the Sounds Superb albums. What about other 60s and 70s albums with US rarities on them. I remember getting a copy of Funky Bottom Congregation when Herb Ward was big. Also I forgot the title but I have another RCA album with Willie Kendricks Change your ways. Wasn't Mamie Galore "No Right To Cry" on one as well. Paul

Great albums, I bet I wasn't the only person on here to rush out and get the R D Taylor one when "Ghost" was massive. I particularly liked the Stevie Wonder one, If I remember correctly it was a combination of the Uptight and Down to earth albums. All brilliant tracks Paul

Sorry mate, but you are wrong definately April 74. I was there and I didn't go to my first allnighter until Sept 73(Va Vas). The acts were Hearts Of Soul????? Mel & Tim, The Exciters, Major Lance and JJ Barnes. It was also the same night as the Eurovision Song Contest, but I can't for the life of me figure out why I remember that little titbit of information.! Paul
