Casino spin in 74. Got booted after a short time.

The other thing is, the Casino gets the blame for stuff like this which, as Joey said was absolutely massive in the first few months there. But it should be remembered that it was originally a Mecca spin along with a lot of other "blue eyed" sounds.

Just Checked through all 18 pages, and although not monsters but possibly nearly forgotten from the early days(nights), I'll add: Willows, My Kinda Guy Diane Brookes, In My Heart Betti Webb, I Know 100% Aged In Soul, One Mans Leftovers Tower Of Power, This Time It's Real Jackie Follett, There's A Moment Some of these were played pre Wigan in the wilderness months between the Torch and Casino.

1971 at the age of 13 I was taken to St Maries youth club in Southport. Many memories of little piece of leather, Back street, cool jerk, Breakout, etc. But my two favourites at the time were Scratchy, and The Snake! They still being back happy memories no matter how many times I hear them, or how fashionable people think they are.

Tony Petherbridge founded the Northern Soul Club. The International Soul Club was Chris Burton the former Torch owner. My first proper northern venue was Whitchurch Civic Alldayer August 1973 age 15!

Far better being a gunbuster. No watches! Now I'm more of a clanky controlie in Pompey dockyard.

I used to travel a lot for work, and ended up for a couple of days in Zantè fixing a yacht. I had my dinner in a restaurant, and on the way back to the hotel saw a flyer in a bar window saying "Tuesday night is soul night with Darren". As it was Tuesday I went in. Darren was just setting up his equipment. It looked like it was going to be CDs, but that was ok. The music being played from behind the bar was a mixture of chart stuff and a bit of northern. So far so good I thought. Anyway, as 8 o'clock approached Darren got ready. The first track started, ok it was Stand By Me, I thought I'm only here for a couple of hours due to an early flight next day. As the intro to Stand by Me got to the point when Ben E King was about to start, Darren lifted the mic to his mouth and in true pub singer style screamed "whin De Nite as come"!. Feck me, I've never finished a pint and run away so fast!

I came into Russ's shop on the Saturday afternoon. You, Russ and Soussan were there, and As was playing some of his synthesizer instrumentals as I walked in. His version of Thumb a ride was on the turntable. The look on his face was a picture when I said "what the f*ck is this shite". I wasn't impressed with the sounds or his pink suit!

Soul sounds boots are part of the history of the scene, more about memorabilia than a record collection.

You could say, just about everything by young Darrow! Pain Gets A little Deeper, What Have I Got Now, etc

Willie Henderson and the Funky Sisters were not there, but shit group called Hearts Of Soul were.

There was also the Gary Glenn & the Soul Set version played around the same time, but still not an instrumental! I remember Leon Young Glad All Over being played almost every other record around that time. It died a death after a couple of weeks though. And what about all those awful Simon Soussan synthesized efforts They Say, I've got Something good etc.

Probably Gary Glenn & The Soul Set and your mind erased the terrible vocals!

I find Johnny Hampton a bit of a downer. When I first heard the Platters it was wow!, The backing singers lift the whole feel of the song to a happier more upbeat level. Paul

St Maries youth club in Southport in 71. Scratchy The Snake Cool Jerk Little Piece Of Leather Barefootin' Backstreet Plus a few chart things at the time, but it was the listed ones plus Mitch Ryder & the usual motown things that really made an impression. Paul

I may be wrong, but I used to get lists in the early 70s from A J Lewis in Telford, I think the name changed to Soul Scene I think, I believe he may have become oldies unlimited. Originally it was just general soul stuff, but there were some "northern" items in there. Paul

I used to get his lists in the early/ mid 70s, an remember hearing Youngblood Smith at the casino & the name rang a bell. Sure enough, verve demo 25p on Graham's list! Unfortunately it had gone when I phoned. Oh well!
