  1. When I used the term disco I think I was being ironic, and was refering to how it sounded at the time to a 17 year old Wigan regular. I became quite a regular at the Mecca during early 75 because I was "grounded" from nighters . I didn't hate the tracks, but preferred the true northern stuff played at the time. Another track you didn't mention from this Mecca era was "Turning My Heartbeat Up" which nowaday appears to be classed as a wigan pop side to a certain extent. What did it for me at the Mecca, although I continued to go occasionally, was when I went for the usual walk downstair to watch the "divs" and the DJ was playing Esther Phillips "What a Difference a Day Makes", which was then played by Levine later on. Rare soul?. Paul
  2. All the stuff when the mecca went "Disco" But now when I listen to Bobby Hutton, Voices Of East Harlem, Pointer Sisters, Anne Sexton, What fantastic soulfull tracks. Sorry Pete, But also the Carstairs. Paul
  3. What confuses me, is that on "The Roots Of Northern Soul(30 Allnighter Classics From The Early Days)" CD on Goldmine, Mr Roberts in his sleeve note refers to it as an "Almost made it sound" whatever that means. Brilliant track though. Paul
  4. About 20 years ago, found a Valentines "Breakaway" SS7 at a Plymouth infant school Jumble sale. It was among the usual Ken Dodd Tears etc. The label was damaged where someone had sellotaped a centre spider into it. But at 2p it was a bargain. Played ok as well. Paul
  5. In the back of my mind I rember reading that Sam had covered Classical Gas as "Morning Of The Monkey" although it was possibly a joke. It was actually arranged by Mike Post. And although it is easy to blame every pop record on Wigan, It should be remembered that many were played before that, such as Domino. Stop Breaking My Heart Tom Jones, PJ Proby Niki Hoeky, and many others. Although the DJs at Wigan at times took the piss. At my first alnighter, at Vavas I couldn't believe that Richard was playing under my thumb by the Rolling Stones off the Aftermath album! Paul
  6. One went on ebay about 2 years ago for about £400. Just afterwards I sold mine after it didn't reach reserve, and I sold it off ebay at £250 but it was onlt about VGC. IMHO Carl Douglas is a far better record than Soul Joe. Paul
  7. Burscough Fooball Club on Tuesday nights. Soulspinners 4 1973. Paul
  8. There was a topic the other week about it's discopvery I think it went that Simon Soussan was at the warehouse of one of his suppliers, and the supplier basically knew the sounds to find, and slipped this on. Apparently SS went apeshit and couldn't believe the artist. Great record IMHO. Paul
  9. Hello mate, I remember the name. I have a Hollywood A Go GO with a speeded up version of Marsha Gee on the other side on styrene. I think they came from Pete though! KTF Paul
  10. No, I've just scanned it. Thanks to everyone for the other info. This record shows how strange things were over here in the sixties. Another American non hit by a then pretty much unknown singer. Spawning 2 UK cover versions. At least I know my Dusty Springfield album version isn't a pressing! Paul
  11. Not mentioned in JMs bootleg book, but all promos on pipsike are red writing not black. I'm sure it is a pressing. Paul
  12. At work, someone put the guiness book of the Billboard top 40 in the canteen. I looked through it to see how many "Northern" tracks had actually been US hits. There were actually very few suprises, I knew Darrel Banks, Open the Door, Spiral Staircase, Human Beinz etc. What did suprise me was that the Ojays first US Hit was backstabbers. OK it was only the top 40 but I would have thought that something had got through in the '60s. Another suprise was Cool Aid, Paul Humphrey was a small hit. But it was a suprise that it was a Northern biggie as well. (I bought it in selectadisc for 75p). I saw the O'jays In Jacksonville Collosseum in 1983, with Bunny Sigler. How many of our old tracks were evident. NONE. Oh well. Paul
  13. I think brenda Hollaway When I'm Gone was getting loads of plays around 79 at wigan and I got a copy of the Motown 16 big hits Vol 4, with it on, without a sleeve in a junk shop. not bad condition. about 10 years later I found the sleeve at a car boot. Well chuffed. Paul
  14. Looking through my records, and I checked my copy of Moses Smith. According to Johnny Manship it is very difficult to tell the original from the boot. I always though mine was a boot, although it could be original, I bought it on the way to Wigan form someones box. Anyway, JM says that the original has LW BF A in the runout, as has mine. But he says the record dips 1/3 inch from the centre. Mine certainly dips, but more like 1/2 " from the centre. Can anyone confirm the original, and if it is, approximate value. Paul
  15. Wasn't he also married to Tamiko Jones & was also involved with the OOTP pressings with Chris Burton? Paul
  16. Not got this anymore, but used to end my DJ spots with this in Plymouth in the late '70s. Love it. Better than Jimmy Delphs IMHO. Paul
  17. Thanks for posting this. Another great talent lost to us. I have also learned by reading this that I shared a birthday with her(also Chaka Khan....er....and Marti Pellow ). Bye Patrice> Bye the way, by coincidence I have been using Josie & The Pussycats as my avatar for some time. Paul
  18. THis has been done a couple of times, and the two that immediately spring to mind are Ambers "Potion Of LOve"/"Another Love" on smash Intruders "Check Yourself"/"It Must Be Love" Paul
  19. A bit late as we should be on saintly things today, but Jimmy helms "My Little devil" Paul
  20. Quite like reaching for the best. Paul
  21. Only £15 unfortunately. There was a discussion about it on here a couple of months ago when I asked for a valuation. I'll try to find it later. Paul
  22. But wasn't Timi Yuro on 6/3 in its day By the way Ken, have you noticed the last track played is stuck under your avatar. BRIAN HYLAND Paul
  23. Remember going to Vavas for the first time in 73. Don't think your brother was there that night, but got the bus from Ormskirk with Tommy Allinson, Mandy Edis, Steve Marchant, Porky, I also think Daffer was there & a few others. It was awsome. Went in there thinking "bastard Pillheads closed the Torch", came out thinking "gotta get some gear next time". My next time was Wigan. To me it was great days. Paul
  24. I remember at school, a lad who was into Hendrix, The Who, etc talking about a set of rock albums that had come out and he told me one of them was "feckin' soul sh*te". The series went like this:- Backtrack 1-Who, Hendrix, Arthur Brown, Marsha Hunt. Backtrack 2-Who, Thunderclap Newman, Fairport Convention Backtrack 3-Who, Hendrix Backtrack 4-Who, Hendrix Backtrack 5-Who, Hendrix Backtrack 6-Sandpebbles, Parliaments, Precisions,Debonaires, Al Kent Then it was back to the normal Who/Hendrix stuff. I've just dug my copy out for the first time in years, the track listing is as follows:- Love Power-Sandpebbles I Can Feel The Ice Melting-Parliaments Headache In My Heart-Denonaires Because Of Love-Sandpebbles Let Hurt Put You In The Loosing Seat-Parliaments I'm In Love Again-Debonaires You've Gotta pay The Price-Al Kent (I Wanna)Testify-Parliaments You'll Soon be Gone-Precisions Don't Be Sore At Me-Parliaments Where Do I Go From Here-Al Kent The question is were many people aware of this issue. I know that many of the tracks did come out on UK Track, and this was reissued as Liquorice Allsorts a couple of years later. Is this sort of thing worth anything? Paul
