Well, the Snake did it for me in 1971 when I went to my local youth club and discovered this brilliant music. And IMHO it still sounds great on the rare times that I play it. I'm sure that there a lot of other people on this site that started their time dancing to it. Great record, great lyrics, and by a great artist. Not one for the soul snobs though. Not country enough. I though we used to dance in time to the music, and maybe occasionally a spin Backdrop or whatever when it fitted in. Not contantly spinning, backdropping & ignoring the beat totally. What a feckin embarrasment. paul

Didn't Frank Elson in his B&S Column rave about the Vogues one week saying it sounded like a cross between Bobby Bland & ?(someone else just as black soulfull etc.,I can't remember who the other artist was) Paul

It's where they play that norman sole stuff. I must admit I had to stop in a very small shopping centre in pompey last week when I heard "You're Gonna Love My Baby" playing. I waited around for the next track,................. totally forgettable pop stuff. Paul

Also lets not forget that it was relatively unknown for 3 ish years, until re discovered by the fledgeling "northern soul" scene, and reminded the record bying public that Jackie Wilson was actually pretty damn good. Paul

I totally agree with everything you say. Frank Wilson "Do I Love You" is in my humble opinion, one of the best records ever played on the scene. I was actually taking the piss out of the criticise FW for the sake of it brigade. Unfortunately, the track has, like many others, been over played over the 30 years it has been in the public domain. It is also open to stick because Kev Roberts dared to write a book about what constituted in his opinion the top 500 northern tracks, and put it at No. 1. In the example I used I just want to say Frank Wilson is, and Dean Barlow isn't Northern soul. IMHO. What I actually meant in my first post is that I was suprised that your original post had not started a huge argument about FW. Paul

Mr Ms ruined our place at the Casino. Up until the 1st anniversary when it opened, the top of those stairs by Mr Ms door was the Ormskirk/Southport corner. After it did open though, A lot of my mates spent a lot of time in Ms, I preferred the main room mainly walking round & verballing at people . For some reason the records I remember in the early days of Ms from 74 to 76 when I stopped going were pop stuff like 4 Seasons "Opus 17(don't you worry bout me)", Swinging Soul Machine "Spookys Day Off", John Fred "Hey Hey Bunny", Paintbox "Get Ready For Love", Spencer Davis "Gimme Some Lovin'". I don't know why, but mainly it was the pop stuff that I remember. The other thing I remember about Mr Ms is the fact that the upstairs Bar wasn't manned, & you could spend all night pouring yourself plastic cups of best bitter Paul

If I remember correctly. Ian Levine returned from the states in 74 with the vocal to Bok to Bach. This was it !!!. I first heard it at the Rose Room in Burnley at an alldayer. This was a great venue that Had Russ & Richard, coupled with levine & Curtis, with Ginger & Eddie stuck in the middle. Paul

I saw her at the Top Rank in Preston, probably about the same time, mid 73. She must have been doing a recce of suitable Bingo venues . Prabably the same DJs as well, I know Andy Hanley was one of them, & Possibly Ian Levine? Paul

I remember one night it seamed like they just played Easy Baby & The Larue all night. Shawn Robinson was V big. paul

I always thought live acts broke up the allnighter so I didn't go much on them. I remember Tommy Hunt, the Exciters twice, Detroit Emeralds, Jnr Walker. at the 'nighters although I went into Ms to get away from it. I did go to one of the early Saturday sessions once to see Arthur Conley & got back to verbal all over him in his dressing room. Judging by the autograph it must have been 1975, but I can't find a reference in any B&S. I'll have to check for '74. Who remembers the Burnley Cats Whiskers alldayers. I'm sure 100% pure poison were on once, but I was in the middle of a severe cracking up session , and everyone in Burnley was after me , so I did a runner . Happy memories . I did see the "The Javells" at the casino, but it was a Wednesday or Friday night early session. Paul

Sad to hear about Tony, he was a really nice guy. MY sister didn't go out with Roy. If it's Roy Gostello you mean, he really lost the plot apparently, but he married? Margaret from Wrexham. I don't know what happened to them. As for loosing the plot, that's why after 3 years of overindulgence of the fast things in life, I decided to join the navy. I did go back to Wigan a few times, but I had been busted just before I joined, and my summons didn't turn up until I was in the navy & nearly got Kicked out. It took a lot of waffleing to convince them that it was a one off and I had been a good boy since . I did do a bit of DJing round the Plymouth area in the Late 70s/early 80s, but didn't regularly do any 'nighters. Paul

I went to school with his brother, They lived next door to Stanley Secondary. Malcolm was a year or so older than us. I remember him from Wigan & Mecca. Did someone say Tony Cox died? Paul
