One I bought when it came out on cassette in the early 70s was "Motown Memories 16 none stop Tamla Hits" with 6 x 6, Festival Time, Take Some Time Out For love etc. I found a copy in a charity shop for 50p recently, put it on, and although I have heard all of the tracks a million times over in the last 30 years, it just took me back to the age of 14 again(not literally). One that started me off all those years ago. I remember we used to call the trousers Ruperts as in "the Bear". My sister had them. And do you mean the zip up cardigans, we called them football jumpers. My team, Southport, played in Old Gold, the nearest you could get was Yellow & black. The propper ones were some type of wool, but you could get cheep versions on the market made out of nylony acrylic stuff!. The colours were brighter, in blue & white or red & white but they were not real. The same thing was a black jumper with a red & green star on it. They came out with a cheepo version of that one with 3 stars, as worn by Wigans abortion on TOTP Paul

The main name Frank Elson had was Keith Bradley from Ormskirk who he threatened with legal action. I also think Pete Got a mention. I've mentioned it before, but Pete used to get his emis done at a recording studio in Carnforth(I think it was called Deroy). Some of the top DJs used the same place, and the owner used to tape all the stuff the DJs had and offer Pete copies at cost. The first emi I had, I bought in 73 and was Butch Baker Workin' At The Go Go/Promatics Sugar Pie Honey. I haven't seen Keith for years, I left Ormskirk in 76 when I joined the Navy, & hardly went back. I was reminded of it this morning as I was doing my morning ritual. I like to read old B&S and to a lesser extent Black Music. and I came across the Frank Elson legal threat to Keith. Went with Pete lawson a few times to Deroy recording studios in Carnforth. This is where he used to get his cut. Used to put 2 tracks on each side & sell for a fiver. The good thing for Pete was, if he didn't have some of the top sounds, many of the big DJs of the time used to make copies of theirs there, and the owner used to let Pete get copies. Keith Bradley also from Ormskirk used to trade in them as well, much to the chagrin of Frank Elson, who threatened to issue writs!. There was someone who had a brand new Rally Electronic, who used to park it next to the ABC cinema opposite the Casino. I went on mine twice in 1975. I was actually grounded, by my parents, from going to the casino for a while due to police finding some tablets that I was "looking after for someone". For a couple of months I mainly went to the Mecca, until someone spiked my drink with bombers , and after going home on the free coach, wheeled the trusty LI150 out and rode into Wigan. I parked in a backstreet well away from the actual Casino for some reason. As I said, I only did this twice. Once I got back into the regular alnighter scene it was back with the mates for the Saturday night ritual. Quite a few soulies had Lammies in the early days, but didn't use them for allnighters. I don't remember seeing many scooters at Wigan in the years 73-76, when I Joined the Senior Service. Back on an LI125(200 rapido) nowadays. Paul

Steve, I stopped regularly going to allnighters before FW was discovered, so I am not swept away with the dewey eyed nostalia of my first hearing of it filled with black bombers with my baggies & vest on. The fact that I have not developed with the allnighter scene for the last 30 odd years does not take away the fact that FW is a good Northern soul record. The fact that someone paid a huge amount of his own money to purchase it, does not make it a bad northern soul record. The fact that it appeared in a fast food ad, the fact that it is on the latest happy birthday motown boxed set, the fact that it is used over "wife swap", the fact that it does appear on various radio and TV things and the fact that it is often trotted out on Documentaries about "Northern" soul does not make it a bad record. In the 31 years since it first graced the turntables it has been played far more times that is good for it & most people are sick of hearing it, but it is still a good Northern soul record. I also think that some comments made like "I really dont think it would raise much interest as a new discovery now " from Jocko, make me think that I'm glad I don't attend allnighters now. Many of the detractors of FW and similar are soul snobs, but I suppose to a certain extent I am a "Northern Soul" snob. Much of what I hear that is played nowadays is IMHO Nice, but doesn't set my soul on fire. A lot of the "modern" I hear just reminds me of Andy peebles Soul Train on Piccadilly that was played as I was getting ready to go out on a friday, or as I was coming down on a Sunday i.e. what I was escaping to Wigan/Mecca from. I like my nostalgia, & I like good soul music. The music I tend to enjoy listening to or dancing to is the music that when you hear the first few bars for the first time it makes you sit up & listen & makes your feet move. In the end it is each to his or her own. I still get excited when I am out somewhere & someone plays Darrow Fletcher. Or like at one of you dos I attended when you played You're a Puzzle & Fool To Fool. It was a few years ago, but I had not heard them for donkeys years. I think I will leave the current scene to yourself and stick with my listening to thousands of oldies(not 500) that I love from the last 40 years. I was going to stay out of this, although I was one of the first to vote option A. I believe it is a great record and so different in my opinion to a lot of those tedious formulaic motown sounds like the Temps "Forever In My Heart". lets face it, most of the mid to uptempo motown that slots into the "Northern" Bracket is just so samey(?). FW is not my favourite Northern Track, or even my Favourite Motown track(that is possibly Kim Weston "I'm Still Loving You"). Bit it mainly suffers from the Rare(Northern) soul snobs problem with mainstream popularity. Of course this is all IMHO. Paul

The best one has got to be Stevie Wonder "What Christmas means To Me", awesome. Followed by the aforementioned Darlene Love "Christmas(Baby Please Come Home)". I hate the Artie Fullilove track. Paul
