  1. I haven't said anything on here about the one show so here goes...... I was very disappointed that Keb wasn't there telling them that we dance like that because we all did Kung Fu. Anyone else notice this omission? Paul
  2. The Live appearance was on a Wednesday or Friday early session. Not the allnighter. It was a bit of a scam by Pye records. They were issuing genuine northern sounds at the time, and they found Goodbye by Nosmo King, the B side of Teenage love, issued early in 74. They covered it up as the Javells & sent EMI discs to Russ & a couple of other DJs. To me it was a likeable pop record, but it went massive. As a record it was no worse than some other things played at the time, like Keith, Daylight Saving time, or Gary Feckiin' Lewis. The Javells were Nosmo(Steve Jameson) and a couple of Black female backing singers, probably to give it a bit of cred. After a couple of other releases like Lovin' You Is Easy(which also wasn't bad) He was quoted in the music press that he was leaving the northern scene, "which he helped to create"(FFS) Paul
  3. Another that always works for me. I'm sure that as a kid I heard it on radio Caroline.
  4. The first song that gave me that hair standing on end up the back of the neck moment is quite a surprising one. I had a lot of Otis, Aretha records that I loved, and I also had a few , what would be classed as Northern that I also loved, but in 1972 when My cousin played Vol 2 of the Motown Disco classics album & Two Can Have A Party came on....Boom, the hairs went and I though What the Feck was that!!!!!!! Uptempo still does it for me now. Paul
  5. Play PJ on 45 & you have a great stompin' Pinkey & Perky Cover up!!!!!! Paul
  6. Always wondered why the label on the B side of mine had done a runner.!!
  7. It's always been a favourite of mine, hence my signature at the bottom(Which I've probably misquoted!!!!!) Paul
  8. At 15 I was allowed into Vavas, but on my second visit 2 weeks later I was too young!!!!! By then the casino had opened & I started going there every week, Nov 73. Paul
  9. How about this one? https://youtu.be/uJ4h1rFgx2Y
  10. If it was Ms it doesn't count Paul
  11. I don't remember either Northern Dancer or Exodus filling the floor anywhere important. Maybe at a youthy. Paul

  14. I would say, definitely a weeknight do. Paul
  15. I remember Graham Bonney singing his version of this on "Lift Off With Ayshea" in about 1970. Paul
  16. I had the soulworld pressing(Walk On Baby). When I ebayed all my records about 6 years ago, the purchaser asked if I had a scan of the original label so he could DJ with it!!!. The week I first heard this at Wigan, Graham Warr had a demo on his list for 25p, if I remember correctly. Funny, when I phoned up on Monday, it was out of stock. Paul
  17. I only really remember Mark Waters, by name. I only went there for a short time, & then fell out with the lads there. My name is Paul Rimmer( a good Southport name that!!). My favourite records at the time were Cool Jerk, Barefootin, Little Piece Of Leather, Mr Bang Bang man, and my 2 absolute favourites were Scratchy & The Snake. Great times, that set me on the road to Va Vas, Mecca & Wigan. Paul
  18. The card covers ring a bell. I remember the shop from about 70/71, and as I was only 12/13 I was only going to learn about what became "northern soul" when I started going to St Maries Youth Club in late 1971. Although at about the same time, my older sister started bringing more obscure sound into the house after hearing them at the Tudor, & Sloopys. Paul
  19. Was that the shop that also used to specialise in Reggae LPs(with the big 14/6 labels on)?. I remember buying my first soul record from there "Get Ready" the Temptations with the centre dinked, and I also bought the Olympics LP on JOY. I also always wondered about those Freddy Cannon/Mickey Lee Lane boots. First saw them in 72/73ish. Paul
  20. Around 1974/75, Ormskirk appeared to be the EMIdisc Capitol of the world, with weekly threats from Frank Elson to out Keith Bradley & Pete Lawson as serial bootleggers. They did put adverts in Black Music offering the top northern sound for sale. Paul
  21. Although you could not be served alcohol at the allnighters, did anyone else suss out that you could pour yourself a beer in the upstairs bar in Mr Ms. In 1975. I did!!!!!!! Paul
  22. I Meant to quote Cartys post above, but here is Billy Mac with Wacker & my Sister next to Mr Ms door in 1974. Paul
  23. We used to go to Russ's market stall on a Saturday afternoon. In mid 73 he played the Sherrys, and I'm sure at the time he claimed it was a one off. One of his I think Paul
  24. Very surprised at some of the tracks. I ain't going nowhere, Freddie Chevez, Lee Andrews, Eddie Foster. I would have put them about 6 months to a year later. I started going about a week or two later. Great tracks though. Paul
