  1. Legendary tune IMO. Unusually enough, a real Cleethorpes Winter Gardens memory for me from when RB was so ably assisting us to hold the place together.... sniff..............memories...like the corners of my mind etc etc Now though, I'm sure Roger must get sick of me running in during his spot whenever I bump into him, asking for this, shuffling my not very impressive thang along to it, and then scuttling off back to the modern room! Anyway, what's the Jaadee then? It's on Tide innit?....
  2. Anyway seeing as I'm here can I chuck Dazzle - You Dazzle me into the pot of loveliness........
  3. I've just read back this thread and am stunned (or summat) about the Dyson's Faces 45.... More info please soul sourcers!?.... Scan please girf!....
  4. Cool! Nice 1 John!...
  5. When Nelly Platten rung me with the sad news I couldn't believe it. Taffy was a top bloke and will be very sadly missed. It was only a few weeks ago that we were going through Fish's stall together at Brough and picking some tunes out for each other.... Always a smile, always time for a chat.... Very sad. Sincere condolences to his family.
  6. Deep respect. I turn to this tune often. Now seems appropriate. RIP TP. A true legend.
  7. BTW my 'you tube' channel link below is better for the tunes...........
  8. Aye Ali, and it's good to see a few of my posted tracks already on here! Going with (I think...) the spirit of Simon's original thread intentions, just hit the Modern Soul Classics links below....
  9. Ace tune, a proper "Modern Soul Classic"! Don't forget 'Cisselin Hot' too!...........
  10. Rick don't be put off mate, just rise above it. Having had the privilege to know Rick for some years (and having learned loads from him over those years) soul-sourcers are very lucky to have the potential of Rick sharing his considerable knowledge on here... Just my opinion like.........
  11. Tom Moulton words about it: " You have to remember - so many great ideas are accidents... I mean - I thought 12" single was a great idea AFTER the fact. You see, this is going back now to the early 70's, when I first started I took my records to Media Sound to master. So, the thing is - one day I went in there to Jos Rodriguez - and I had "I'll be holding on" by Al Downing and I said - Jos, I could really need some acetates and he said - I don't have any more 7" blanks. All I have is like the 10" and I said - well, if that's the only thing - we're gonna do it, what difference does it make? So he cut one, I said -it looks so ridiculous, this little tiny band on this huge thing. I asked Jose - what happens if we just make it bigger - like spread the grooves? Then I've got to rise the level and so he cut it like at +6. When I heard it I almost died. So it was by accident, that's how it was created. But for the next song we cut, we went for the 12" format instead of the 10" and the song was "So much for love" by Moment of Truth. That was the real birth of the 12" single.
  12. And so under-rated and underplayed.....
  13. So many obvious great ones to go at..... This one might not be defined as "the greatest", but it's certainly kept a few dancefloors moving! https://www.youtube.c...h?v=pGXayo80l90

  16. Not sure on that one Carl?... When you up here next? Nip in for a jar at his boozer and ask him! Aye, a proper youth club disco record! 'One Minute Every Hour' was another one we've all probably tried to pull a bird to....... Where was Malcolms Carl?.... Not that I'm 74 or owt, but I do remember the flower shop being next to Pioneer Cafe. It was kind of set back from the road in a little sqaure, behind what would have been the frontage of Yankeeburger. I think the story was that John Science owned Pioneer as an American style cafe bar kinda thing (I clearly recall going in with me mam and remember thinking how cool the sugar shakers were) then he turned it into Yankeeburger (i think he actually called it Yankeeland). Burger heaven. Not to mention 'Frank The Yank' and 'Frank The Kraut' (the foot long frankfurter thingies). Happy days.
  17. Brunswick was on Chapel Street (between Carr Lane & Paragon St, or for ease of reference the bit between the arcade and where Pioneer & Daily Mail offices used to be (later yankeeburger). It later became all sorts of things and is now Magma or summat. Some of the lads ran a soul night there on wednesday nights, about 12/13 years ago.... We all used to take turns spinning a few tunes...... Aye I remember Beerkeller and trying to get in (mostly unsuccessfully) under age, then later more successfully. And Scamps (became Odessey 2000 or summat with the phones on the tables) and Hoffbrauhaus (or whatever) next door (strippers on friday lunchtimes so I'm told - I only worked nextdoor so wouldn't know of course)....... The Paul you mentioned is Paul Rusling. He's the landlord at The Triton Inn at Brantingham (Brough/Welton) now and is still into his soul..... he's always got soul on when we go in there...
  18. I used to go to Bailey's under 18's, then Romeo's under 18's and of course graduated to 'grown up' Romeos (as did probably everyone else in Hull at that time - it was just what you did). 1971 a bit early for me though!.... Ah! The old run...Centre Bar, Cheese, Brunswick (for a quick game of darts for some reason??), Trog Bar, Dram Shop then onto Romeo's ... I'm filling up Who's the DJ you were talking with? Is he ex Bailey's/Romeos?.... BTW, about 5 years ago we started a Romeo & Juliets 'revival' night at Welly Club on Beverley Road, booking Womack & Womack, Kenny Thomas, Gwen Dickey & Gwen McCrae over a couple of years..... (It was/is more a 'Juliets' night than 'Romeos' as you can imagine). We still have a Bank Holiday shindig when we can be bothered to get our heads together to do it..... Happy days....
