  1. I know it's each to their own Jordi but I'm with you all the way. My idea of R&b is a nice bit of R. Kelly or even just a sight them mighty fine long legs of Jamelia (and her tunes ain't bad either!). Time to get me coat i reckon....TAXI FOR WOOMBLE Steve
  2. And I remember buying one off you Pete! Traded it in a drunken state with Joey Dunlop (both of us in a drunken state i think ) at last Cleethorpes Weekender, can't remember what for, or why for that matter!! Think it might have been for Corey Blake on Capitol...That's it!! I'm never selling records when pissed up ever again!! BTW I agree with you, I must have had 5 Ellusions and then let them go when i got fed up with it. I still keep buying the bastard back tho when I see it cheap It's not bad for a white garage band really... Still, I must be the only person who can clear the floor with it, regularly ! Steve
  3. Just as a matter of interest Jamie , there's a 12" 'slow' version of this on the other side of Kenny Long's 'Better to have Loved And Lost' 12" on Brite Lite (great dancer ) from the early 80's (can't remember exact date and can't be arsed to go and dig it out! ). I'm not too good on the who-was-in-what-band kinda thing but I think I remember Rob Thomas telling me that Kenny Long was Mark IV lead singer. The label obviuosly ties up but no doubt some swot will have all the info! I've got a white demo of 'signs' on 7" if you wanna offer me daft trades!! I think the yellow issue is perhaps rarer tho?? Steve
  4. It sure is Master K matey! It's called 'Him' and it's (pardon the Kenny pun!) OUTSTANDING!! KT let me have a copy the other week when he came and did a live gig for us in Hull (Where he tore the place apart, 800 baying souls!!) and I've got to say it's a bloody marvellous track. Played it to former Cleethorpes Winter Gardens legend Rick Scott in the week and he was speechless, which is a change for Rick . KT says he ain't gonna perform it live if poss until he can do it with the band. It's gonna be worth the wait...... And before you ask.... no chance!! I've promised KT not to pass it on! Tape it off the radio, Richard S probably playing it and I know Tony Blackburn(!!) is as well in London. Kev's probably spinning it on his solar show too?? Kev?? Steve

  7. Good effort. What about the unlikeliest white artists who had 'genuine' (?) plays on the Northern scene? Here's a starter for 3ish... Elvis - Rubberneckin' Glitter Band - Makes You Blind (TUNE!!) Tom Jones - Stop Breaking My Heart And what was that Led Zep track? Was it Trampled Underfoot or summat??
  8. Sometimes it's felt like a feature length episode of Dr.Who with the Tardis arriving and the contents of Wigan Casino circa 1978 disembarking. And the rest of time since then just never happened..... or did it???
  9. Ellusions - You Didn't have To Leave - Lamon Topics - Hey Little Girl - Tropic Tim Murray - Thinkin Of You on Detroit Tracks (for all you x-over babies out there, what a tune!!) And there's quite a few where I've always thought hmmmmm, dunno what colour that is (so if I like it, I don't suppose it matters! )
  10. Hey thanks for that Tony, I didn't know that and have always played it off the album. Great track though! Shame on me for lazy research!
  11. Fabulous Dimensions - I Can't Take It. I ain't really a mainline 6ts fan but I can't understand how this doesn't get played. Maybe it's just not 'rare (?)' enough? People, keep selling 'em and I'll keep buying 'em!
  12. Isley Brothers - Seek and You Shall find Marvin and Tammi - Memory Chest (awesome) David Ruffin - I Can't Stop The Rain Smokey & Miracles - Just Losing You Gladys Knight & The Pips - Ain't You Glad You Chose Love Gladys Knight & The Pips - The Stranger
  13. 'Precious' could have been fantastic, and almost was. No, actually it WAS fantastic. And many more besides. This new 'soul' covers album is just not up to scratch though. Rather than being reverential to our faith, I've found it a touch embarassing. My own opinion is that if you can't improve on the original, then leave well alone. And how anyone could improve on some of the originals he has tackled is beyond me. Sorry, cos I reckon from his comments over the years he must love the music as much as we do. Still, I've been a fan since the early 'In The City' days and am gonna be there 'live' when he plays Hull. Final judgement then! I really hope he pulls it off live..... (I'm taking the rotten tomatoes to lob at him just in case!)
  14. Sidney Thomas on (I think without digging it out of the box!) Parallax. Fantastically amazing 70's just screaming to be played now (and I do play it at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens!). We also gave it turntable time on 70's Sunday at Cleethorpes Weekender to good response.... Look let's make-a luv...an' see if you like it..... TOP TUNE!
  15. Think I know what you're on about. I like to hear (and play) a good mixed set that dips into all eras. Sticking with one era makes it a bit dull (IMHO ) . But, as you say, the right records have to be programmed to get away with this. Personally, I don't see a problem with a set that rolls through the eras, starting with 6ts and naturally progressing through the 7ts, 8ts, 9ts and (yes!) even finishing up on a gently soulfully garidge kinda thing! And it works! There ya go then peoples, design a set that takes in all eras....answers on a postcard to.....
  16. Chic Cheer! What a party starter!
  17. There would only be one for me. Charles Mann, It's All Over.
  18. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheers Kev, the fact that you were the only one sober enough to use it helped! Seriously though, you get what you pay for and it's taken us a long while and a lot of sound 'experts' (ha ha) to get there. A couple of 'decks memories.... Early 90's we used to run Grimsby Town Hall which was a cracking little venue. We paid our 30 or 40 quid for our 'top quality' sound system which, of course, blew up half way through the night with a full dance floor. Anyway, as luck would have it the Town Hall answered our emergency and managed to dig out for us one old battered belt drive deck that someone had left lying around since the end of the war. And it worked! We plumbed it in to the town hall 'in house' P.A. paging system (how, I 've got no idea!), but the leads weren't very long and Russ White (Ho hum) ended up doing an hour spot on a single toy deck from a cupboard under the stairs ;) Happy days! Another deck disaster was when Pat Brady invited me and Rick Scott to do a Cleethorpesy type-spot at that place next to Pontefract racecourse. We were just getting things moving when I (as always cos I'm a bit mutton-jef!) decides we need a bit more volume to get the atmo rockin'. Cranks it up, blows the system up. Cue a hundred unhappy yorkshire soulies facing an early pay-off to the babysitter! Funny, we were never asked back...Plus I still tell folk it was Rick's fault! ;) Moral of tale - Have respect for the punters, get the best equipment you can afford and always have a backup plan! Steve
  19. 70's 'classic oldie'. just sold a mint yellow issue this weekend for £75. Looks nice on that whit demo tho... Steve
  20. Back to the orig question, and hopefully to maybe offer a bit of guidance to Wendy, last time I played at Valatone this was roughly my playlist. The punters seemed happy, Johnny, Phil and co. seemed happy, I was happy ( or is that pissed??). Following the thread I suppose a lot of this would fall into the x-over camp, but who gives a shit. It's all soul.... Corey Blake - How Can I Go On Without You - Capitol Keni Lewis - What's Her Name - Buddah Montclairs - Hey You - Arch - Delegates of Soul - I'll Come Running Back - Uplook Choice Of Colour - Your Love - APT Hamilton Movement - She's Gone - Look Out Ascots - A Few Feet From The Gutter - Playboy Ultimates - Girl I've Been Trying To Tell You - Br-roma Earl White Jr - Very Special Girl - Cygnet Marie Franklin - Being In Love Ain't Easy - Castle Lynne Varnado - Wash and Wear Love - Sunshine Sound acetate Isley Brothers - My Love is Your Love - That MFP album!! Mel Britt - She'll Come Running Back - FIP Anderson Brothers - I Can See Him Making Love - GSF Flame n King - Oh Happy Day - NYCS Al Hudson - Spread Love - ABC Arthur Miles - Helping hand - FFRR Way Of Life - Trippin on Your Love - Oh bugger can't remember label or is the label way of life as well?? Tony Troutman - What's the Use -Jerri Al Green - Let's Stay Together (singalong to finish!) It's amazing what you can remember from a great night (and from saving your e-mails from the week after!)! Then again, maybe the above is why I haven't been asked back. Johnny?! JOHHHNYY! Steve
