Are you saying that if a person don't go to any all niters they have no interest in the music?????? or is that in the progression of the music????
-
Indeed it is Phil.... Lets try and keep it that way....
-
Good point from Phil... The sound system... The last two times i was there it was pretty poor indeed, spoilt my night... many times i just love to sit on my own aand take in the music, if it aint coming out of the speakers the way i like it then my night is over.... with 2/3 room events i can choose to move to a different room for a better sound There as been a problem with many sound systems over the past couple of years, the problem needs sorting or don't expect people to come back.. whats the point in listening to great soul vocals being dragged through the mud The piss head debate will rage on it seems... I have had problems with them at a few London events over the last couple of years, if i have any of these people acting up near me i would be speak to them that second, if they don't get the message then its them or me going out of the door... At a London event a short while ago i had piss heads banging into me and it nearly kicked off, i told the management and the piss head was still there 2 hours later, staggering around and pissing people off... Well i aint going back there again and many others feel the same.... A point about drinking at all niters... I know the bar takings are needed, a good bar take keeps the hire fee and door tax down...... its a tough job iindeed.. people should have talk to the promoters more, many people have a negative experience at nights, the music/ the floor/ non soulies/ the lighting/ the sound system etc etc etc, if you just leave and dont go back then the promoters don't know why the numbers are dropping off.. I have been a promoter for over 20 years, i like to get feedback on the night, good or bad and then its up to me to either sort things out or lose some custom.. Sometimes i act on the feedback and other times i don't, it depends on what i think is best for my venue or what i want from the event.... For some people its a business and for others a pastime, this as got to be taken into account when talking about each club sometimes..... Its a tough tough job running rare soul events and we are a fussy bunch and getting worse as we get older .... God bless Ady for keeping this going so long... I am sure this topic will bring up points of interest for other promoters too....

Interesting point Beeks.. Don't know of many folks who have come from modern soul into the Devils music , in such a short space of time Always good to see where people came from and where they are at now... My first love motown i guess and super bad lps and reggae aged 12 to 14... Then onto ska/ 60s beat and into Northern with Queens Hall niters.... My taste is pretty loose, 60s/70s Northern, deep funk, latin, deep soul ballads, RnB and a bit more too... An open mind to many styles does the trick for me... I don' get the chance to get all my tunes out of late, gonna get back on to it soon, nothing better at any time of the day or night....

Candi Staton.. Live In Manchester.. Mon/ Tue
Little-stevie replied to Little-stevie's topic in All About the SOUL
I really had a good time, great crowd, full house and up for it... When she did you've got the love at the end it was great to see the whole place rocking..... She was in great voice and looked about 40 years old and still got it .... Maybe the man in her life is keeping her looking young, she just got wed this year... A very good gig indeed from a real soul lady.... -
A very good point mate...... They did it in the past with certain djs....

People like Warren do give the place an exotic feel Good feedback Ady, looks like the posting is working already.... Good luck for May...

promotion is key, got to keep at it.. We can sometimes sit back and not put in the effort required... A few key people to help with promotions Ady.... flyers... have a few key people round the country who will take flyers on a regular basis, people who do go out to events....London/ South... West/Wales..... East Midlands.. West Midlands.... North West... Yorkshire.. North East/Scotland... Just a few flyers in the post to these people will help... I will put out the flyers around Manchester/ North West if you want to drop some in the post... I am sure you will have punters from other places soon??? I am due a visit at some point this year, will look at getting a few along there but som much going on oooooooooop North too, London/ trains/ petrol aint cheap, the feedback with regards to pissheads/ non soul crowd does have an impact when thinking how much its gonna cost and how much it takes out of you, folk need to know its gonna be a special event, we are older and not as impulsive as we once were.. The faceboook page will also help... It keeps people in touch each day as to whats going on... Also choice of guest djs will have am impact... So many djs who play so often, its nothing special to see them play at certain events, you can catch them anytime/ anyplace... Get sexy and have more international guests.. Sweden.. Ireland... Spain....USA... ETC ETC.. plus many quality djs ooooooooop North that could grace to old place and certain djs could bring a bit of a crowd too if its a one off.. Look at the Jumpin Joan night, around 40 down from the North to support her... Just keep it fresh and seek out fresh djs.... Its easy to see who is doing what on soul source events/ lookback etc etc...

Just back from Work and still it goes on... I know feelings run high on these topics....

Just a quick pop in while at work... This thread is getting some attention... With regards to cheap records or not, i don't give a flying f"ck what it costs, many many £10 unknown records to me than £1,000 unknown records, not matter at all.. You will find me playing the rather cheaper options with some imagination i hope... There are just so many great unknown ( to me ) very good and very cheap records, makes a Yorkshire man very happy... Lets get away from cheap/ rare/ known/ unknown, maybe a mix of all these is what i look for in my nights and dj selections.. We just play records.... Just as long as you play with imagination .... Would like people to pop along and see whats played, a playlist alone says little sometimes about how they were played, in what order and how the reaction was, sometimes a tune will get little or no reaction for a small dancefloor but get the place buzzing and many asking what the tunes is.. What you see in one of them windows in Amsterdam can be a total different thing to what you get behind the curtain... Any djs at Soul Or Nothing are welcome to post a playlist if they wish, some do at times and some don't... I don't mind either way... For me, its no playlist, i want people to come and find out whats on offer, maybe they will get a nice surprise, would you want your partner sending you an email telling you what they are gonna do to you when you get home , if so then fine, i would like to wait and see, much more fun for me that way.... Maybe the ones who want playlists are the same ones that as children would hunt for xmas presents round the house a week before, just wait and see, as Cilla says " surprise surprise" or maybe not for the brainiacs of the soul world, who gives a foooooooooooook... Not me.. Just do what you wanna do, some are fine inside a comfort zone while others would like to explore the universe on the look for the holy grail, no problem with both at all, do what makes you happy as much as possible.. No fuss... Go easy, its the Monday after the weekend after all...

Thanks Paul for your comments and glad you had a good time on Saturday night... IIts a 3 room all niter ( well 4 with the modern room 10/2am.. ) There is a main room for northern and a quality RnB room, its our job to offer something different to both those room and then folk have more choice... Got some good djs coming up in the next few months to keep it fresh... This aint an oldies verses anything else debate, room for all and plenty of choice in events each week.... Just do what you wanna do and get your fix each weekend.. Plenty of folk who attend the niter have never popped heads through the door, maybe they don't know where we are in our little den ... No bother, no fuss.. Thanks to the folk who have popped in and those that have supported us at each event... It was always gonna be a gamble to start a room at 3am, many friends just can't do the late shift anymore and dance till dawn, thats why i have another location also in more normal hours... An ideal time for me would be 1am to 5am... cheers Steve

And a Toast to you with that choice

Little-stevie replied to Mark Bicknell's topic in Look At Your Box
Not a bad mix but the other is for me, more of a groove to it i think..... -
Thats the one mate... Cheers... A good example of crossover maybe for any who are not so sure about the definition i guess.. I think the crossover reference is used on them sleeve notes for certain track??? aint played it in a long long time, will dig it out,,, Thanks mate
-
does anyone know what the cd was called that featured Cornelius brothers and other crossover tracks, a red cover i think??? i think Richard Searling did the sleeve notes??? This was my first real introduction to the word crossover ... I have the cd someplace, will try and dig it out..
