I would be first in line to buy your book mate .. And would like to meet you one day and here a few real stories.. I must have been going around in a bubble since i started on the scene in 81 or maybe its because i was on the dancefloor all the time and kept out of them dark corners ... The dark side is a place that many would never know about, being just a weekend thing, we turn up, meet/ greet, dance all night and train/ car/ scooter home at 8am... We never did them after parties , that could have burst my bubble i guess....

Can see myself liking this in a set.. I know many who would not mind this kind of thing mixed into a set, the problems come when its followed by plenty of the same vain.. Thats when it gets a little too much for many.. While some like more of a certain style, others like a little thrown into the mix.. The task involved of mixing funk influenced tracks is a delicate one... As is the skill/ timing involved in changing the tempo.. Like with most things... Some can do it really well, some are hit and miss at best... Yet still the ones who can do it the best can lose a dancefloor/ room if they mis-read the crowd... Care should be taken by many promoters when choosing the djs, making sure they get what suits their club the best or in what musical direction they want to go.. As we have said before, this scene is a very broad mix of music styles and tastes.. Now we have individual clubs adopting their own style or what works for them... Feedback on forums/ friends/ other punters can give you an idea of whats in store, plenty of choice, shop around... I have a very broad taste in music and don't mind a mix of styles/ tempo many times.. I would like to see many styles played in a big main room but know from experience its not the most popular choice, thats why the smaller clubs/ multi room venues with smaller side rooms have cropped up, to cater for a minority crowd and keep the main rooms, just that, a room for the majority taste, whatever that is... The delicate balance of styles/ tempo will always remain the 64 thousand dollar question.. The same topic comes up all the time regarding RnB/ Mid Tempo, crossover/Latin/ 70s/ modern etc etc.. and will continue while there is a scene and after.... Not much is black and white, the niter and the soul club were/ are seen as different beasts, this aint always the case anymore.. At many venues the only difference is the finish time, the punters/ music style and tempo/djs can be the same... Club nights going past 2am are quite common now, niters having early starts and many people leaving 3/4 am... Been out all weekend, if this don't make any sense i have an excuse

Been wanting to feature whats on overseas for a long while.. Seems a good time now with Dave doing the overseas events guide.. I am gonna feature soul clubs and history from all over Europe and beyond... First up is the Gothenborg Soul Scene.. A brief history and what's on now from Punky who runs the Soulastatic club... Had the pleasure to go there and play in the past and in the future August event too I hope.. These articles can give an insight to whats on and a chance for some to plans breaks, holidays and take in some soul at the same time.. Europe And Beyond.. Gothenburg soul scene There was some scooter nights in the 80´s playing the soul/ska mix, but at that time funk was really big in Gothenburg (slipping in some soul as well) with clubs like Funk House, Funk nights at Huset and Nefertiti. In late 80´s early nineties Max Hansson, Paul Henningson and Sven Eric started the legendary Earland Club for a couple of years mixing all types of Soul with the then very popular Acid Jazz sounds. Then it was quiet for a while except for the odd mod/scooter night. Neftertiti kept on mixing Club Soul/Funk/Jazz through out the nineties. In feb 1998 Christian Punky and Isse Samie started northern club: Soulastatic Soul Club. Packed from first night, plaing Northern and after a few years adding some Modern Soul as well. Many djs that have been guesting the club over the years : Arthur Fenn, Ady Croasdel, Steve Cato, Carl Willingham, Ginger Taylor, Ralph Tee, Liam Quinn, Terry Davis, Kenny Burrell, Yann Vatiste, Marc Forrest, Tommy (Oslo), Phil Shields, Andy Whitmore, Andreas Dienel, Stuart Tyler, Max Soulservice (resident), Tolgerdt, Russel Paine and LOTS more, the list is long + swede soul mafia like Soulof, Baum, Helena, Marcus, Karl Marthon.. 2 weekenders a year (summer & winter), the club is still running (nowdays by Punky alone) and just celebrated its 13th year. Around year 2000 Christian Hermansson and Ludwig Hall started the On The Real Side Soul Club, and after a while Olof "Soulof" Hjort joined in. Mainly Northern spun, also having uk Dj guests like Dave Flynn, Willingham, Andy Dyson, Butch spinning + swede soul mafia. They also put on 2 very well attended Allnighters named Soul Unity 1 and 2 over the years, club ended around 2007/2008 (if im not wrong). 2009 Fredrik Andersson and Micke Balkefors launched the monthly mid-week nights, Soulful Lounge. Playing an ecclectic mix of modern and jazzy tunes. Still running. 2010 Great Shakes club started by Monourban. Once a month, mixing 6t´s soul with beat/garage. Still running. 2010 Ludwig Hall teamed up with BjÃÆ’¶rn and Magnus Hjorth to form Pied Piper Soul Club, monthly nights with Northern/Modern in its pipe, mainly swede guest Djs this far. In August 2011 Soulastatic Soul Club will run its annual summer nighters (5-6th of august) weekend. Djs Arthur Fenn and hopefully Steve Cato + more TBA Christian March 8, 2011 some past pics from the gallery more can be found here

Tyrone Davis.. Can I Change My Mind
Little-stevie replied to Little-stevie's topic in Look At Your Box
Cheers for info will pass it on.. Seems to be some debate on this.... I have had it on the oldies lable and thought that was a boot all these years.. Is the oldies lable copies more rare??? -
Got mine from Bostock records in Huddersfield Market.. Seem to remember Bettye Swan in most of them plus the mirwood stuff...
-
Been asked by a mate as to other versions of Tyrone Davis.. He had heard a raw live recording.. I know of the original and another later versions with a bit more edge to it.. Any info on versions and years they were recorded please... What lables..
-
Indeed... The funky northern lable is showing on them record boxes now...
-
Carms.. The voice of reason indeed.... Thats the problem at times, we get a bunch of posts saying do it this way and do it that way, a bunch of folk out of the thousands on this forum means nothing at all, nothing.. More input from a wider membership could lead to a more rounded view of whats hot and whats not..

Jesus thats just bad bad bad to my ears... It really don't get worse than that to my ears.. To me its just that bad... Can't listen to it, no way could i dance to it.. This kind of thing would have me doing harm to myself or others.... Do it do it... I say do one do one...
-
There have been so many different sounds to my ears in a Northern Soul room since i started going in 1981.. Who is say whats soul and what aint.. That debate will go on long after we have gone to that great dancefloor in the sky or surfing on the lakes of fire downstairs with columbian marching powder on tap As with so many other topics/ threads we go all round the houses and still come back to the same point... We all have our own take on the music.. The scene is healthy with many many nights to give all the flavours, you know your flavour, just find the place that taste best or at least eat in a place thats got a good menue with choices you like..
-
Dr Pickles for president ... Its like what goes on in the bedroom for many of us.... Not tooooooo early and not too late But the odd time its not over stepping the mark...
-
Thats my point mate.. Some can call the same tune all different manner of things... Carstairs... Funk Deep disco Northern Modern Or in the words of Pete Smith.. " shite" So much time taken up putting lables on it all... Soul does have an influence of Blues/ RnB/ Latin/ Funk/Gospel/ disco etc etc Its soul or nothing to me...
-
Good point indeed Headsy but first we would have to agree on what you mean by funk, like RnB and some other forms of music on the scene, one mans RnB is another mans 60 Rhythm and soul/ club soul..... one mans funk is another mans crossover or funky northern( god i hate that term ).. Soul with a harder funk edge being spun, but to me its all soul to me.... Soul with a funk/ RnB edge too, but again its all soul to me... And that Ghetto/ gospel/soul/funk etc etc.. Again i just call it soul... Same with latin soul.. I do take your point though and can see how some would take to this influx of soul with a funky smell , not sure where the balance should be, maybe thats gonna be up to the paying punters, or different clubs and crowds splitting an already fragmented scene into smaller bits.. I think there as been a welcome introduction of some funk edged sounds but then some see this as open season to try and push some funky Northern( ) that lack s both funk and soul to me... These other influences have made the niter experience that much better for me, but that just me maybe, i have always liked it all since the early 80s, no one style can keep me switched on, a mix of styles and tempo make Steve an happy and contented lad.. A good way of getting this topic/ point over would be to post a few refo soud bites of what you are talking about, then we could start to understand what we all think is soul and whats not.. A good point of interest to many punters who are out and about...

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
Little-stevie replied to Suinoz's topic in All About the SOUL
Just back from the weekend and caught up with this topic again... Its been of interest to many and good points have come forward.... I have never really given age much thought, i just give a chance to some lads/ lasses that don't play out that often, no point me having all guests who play out every week really, just trying to offer an alternative... I know quite a lot of the younger crowd and plenty older crowd too, i just give spots based on what i think will work, age means nothing to me.... Nor does having real depth in collections a lot of the time, a set is 15/ 20 records and i may only ask somed people to play once or twice each year, they could do that with a quality 50 box.., i have had guests who have some of the best/ biggest collections and they have not been on the mark like some who could fit their collections in shoe box No hard fast rules, i have heard young guys who never played out before really hit the spot, i have heard some who have been around all my life fail to read the crowd and make a Mark.. Some have done a great job for me on a debut without ever being in the club before, some who are regular have failed to really cut it at times.. knowing the crowd/ venue can mean a lot sometimes and little at others... I ask people i have heard before, some who have been talked up by friends and some i aint ever heard or met, thats what keeps it fresh to me, at times we don't have a clue what to expect from the djs, or what crowd will come through the door . If i knew what all the djs were gonna play then no point me or others turning up,i need that buzz of the unexpected... But its easy for me to take risks as i run small room events and bars not sure you can take the same risks when running a bigger promotion, something to always keep in mind.. One good point for all is to not make statments about the merits or lack of them if you aint been to a certain club or maybe only popped in once... We have a very healthy scene and much variation around the uk and overseas..I see posts from some people making all kinds of statments, these mean little or nothing if you aint been around to various events to compare.. Nowt to worry about, plenty going on from small bars to 1,000 plus room all niters, some great young lads/ ladies and some fantastic old fossils doing the business... I can travel around Europe to some events a and have a great soul experience, i can travel one mile to the Greatstone soul club and hear the best i have heard anyplace.. Just get out there and do what you wanna do, sometimes too much time taken thinking about it, lifes too short... Another point to keep in mind is that its not just an old/ young boys club, not nearly as many but some ladies of real merit too... I don't care about age/ sex/ English or man from the moon .. Just if i think they can do a job for me and get to my venue early doors and stay around afterwards.. Oh and if i like an respect that person, again something i can afford to do when running smaller events... If i think a person is a prick then no matter whats in the box, they aint gonna feature at my events, thats for another topic i guess -

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
Little-stevie replied to Suinoz's topic in All About the SOUL
you can Mark no problem at many places in the uk and around the world.... There are no rules... Just the way it should be... On the whole young people want to be around young or young minded people.. The music can be from djs of any age though.. Its the same on the dance scene and many other scenes.... -
Some all niters make cash/ profit ????? some don't.... The reason all these nights have been busy is because people knew Peggy Babcock would not be there Only joking Terry...

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
Little-stevie replied to Suinoz's topic in All About the SOUL
Tell us more Ken???? Why bigger???? depends what we mean by big i guess.. I mean the ballrooms like the Ritz/ Stoke etc as big.. Can understand the strong but not the big part of your answer mate You ask for big and strong as the scene gets smaller/ older and weaker -
Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
Little-stevie replied to Suinoz's topic in All About the SOUL
The topic starter was talking about the scene in OZ in the main i guess, having been over there for the national weekender i know that under 50 is a benchmark, not the same here in the uk and even less so around Europe.. This will have to be taken into account on this thread.. With 50 being the new 30 on this scene now, we have still got plenty left in the tank for a good good few years... No problem... Just smaller dancefloors required though for sure...
