That Mace bloke looks like he's only got one CSE in woodwork but makes a very good point above.... Always been a fan of shorter sets.. Smaller more intimate venues for a more progressive sound works just fine as the folk wanting this are in the minority for sure, common sense i guess..

This topic of youth keeps coming up, nothing more really to do maybe, plenty of mixed soul events in all our towns and cities, some will find it, love it and stick with it, just like we did many moons ago.. Not sure what type of event you like Liam??? i as a youngster would be looking for an event that is to my taste and as a good ammount of like minded younger crowd, if that means putting in some milage then so be it, many of us have seen distance no object in search for our real soul.... Me and freinds run events that are pretty open to all age groups, don't really think about age with freinds, our circle of freinds out and about range from 20 to near fossil... Aint no thought about age really.. All welcome but some things never change for me.... You aint gonna stay long on my dancefloor with beer in hand, be that a youngster with alcopops or old timer with a cherry B This young old question keeps cropping up, what some see as young, i see as middle aged, what some see as old, i see as middle aged?? Lets say young is teens to early 20s, then we can get an idea of what we are talking about... young... 15 to 24 Younger.. 25 to 40.. Middle aged 40 to early 50s then.... fossil... Thing is though, some young mates act fossil and some fossil mates act young, some fossils are staying out/ staying up longer than in their youth, some young mates like slippers and a cup of tea after 2am Age range of djs and folk at our events are 20 to 50s, so its folk with a few hairs on you crown jewels to folk who don't require a stannah stairlift ( coming in ) aarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, all this age thing.. Lets knock it on the head.... just get out there and do it.. Long time dead.... PS.. I have been called a youngster a few times of late , i can remember old money, the 1970 world cup and Whatneys Pale ale..

Good post mate, some heart felt points.. But..... Different emotions.. Can a person with iffy records have real emotion?????? i know folk who would ask that question As you say, its not something to get too worked up over, but lord we do at times... Now the playing off boots on the decks at home feels like getting caught by your partner in a suspenders and knickers, " sorry love, i did like it a little bit but i did not get moist" I too am a little naive at times and always expect real records if i paid into an event, if honest would even like real records at a picnic or a funeral but can make the odd exception.. A good freind wanted a few tunes for his wedding ceremony, we could have played them off the devils little silver discs but we got a set of decks and played the real vinyl, the lord looked down and place was filled with sunshine.. I and others have sinned in laters years too, i played 3 tunes off a cd for my wedding ceremony but they were recorded from original vinyl ... No person came to any harm and we went from that place to a big room with dancefloor and many guests and did it for real.. peace love and O veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee O

I guess its the venue that counts aint it... Some places don't mind if its a bootleggers wet dream and others would like to see/ hear the real thing.... As long as we know what venue does what we can make our choices... I like to hear and see the real thing if at all possible but have been caught in satans den on the odd time in my life... As long as we say sorry " sorry lord, i have sinned but have seen the light now, you can still dwell in the house of soul... Peace and love...

As said above promoters do get emotional and even constructive critics can come a cropper... Lookbacks mean very little at times, sometimes its only the promoters/djs writing them , had the same experience at my own promotions, would be good to get lookbacks from others also... Other times lookbacks can be quite informative and give a decent idea of whats on offer.. One problem there as always been for me is that a lot of what i call the really good folk with real heart and soul and not any malice in them are just soul lovers and punters only, the promoter can be a different beast and sometimes in my experience they are.... Not easy to really answer your question though as you don't tell us where you have had these experiences, some folk have an experience at certain local nights and have not been to other places, they then right a statement about the scene , as i have said before, the scene is not just at the bottom of the garden, if thats the as far as some folk like to go then no problem but with a sweeping answer you will get some sweeping statements that don't mean much at all...

Great to see you on here and joining the topic... I am sure you will add so much to what is a lifelong passion for many of us... Maybe a question and answer thread would be great to get into your life story, i have sent you a message.. regards steve

A very valid point... Some views on many topics about the scene, you have to get out and about to do that, sample the delights of different events around this fair land and further if possible..

You tell em George ... Yes i am of the belief that cash alone says who is on the big stage of northern soul on a regular basis.. For now.... Thank god there is a world away from the big stage, the place i have found so many lovers and players of soul music in all its forms from big ticket items to vinyl the price of a fish supper.. A top northern soul dj to me had cudos and near celebrity status for many when we were all young soulies, as we have all mature and find our own sound the big stage can appear as nothing short of a pantomine at times for some folk... One problem maybe with that... I guess the places Tommo goes don't want to hear them ???? thats his dilemma maybe???? some of these oldies events now scream 100% oldies guarantee, not much scope there to mess about with forgotten stuff

Keep your cash in your pocket Over easy, go out and enjjoy yourself, enough djs already... Or if you want to collect then do as many of us do, really shop around and dig a little, many many quality tunes out there for very little money.. Many record dealers are on the back foot.. I collect vinyl to play it, at home our at a venue... The condition aint key to me, don't need anything near mint to dj with, many vg + play very very well and at a fraction of the price I see so many records in boxes for sale at niters/ soul nights that will never ever sell at them prices when they are cropping up on ebay for peanuts... As the song says... " shop around"

Yes a nice topic and it shows how many of us can get our fix from different sounds... One persons pleasure is another persons poison.... Was gonna put mans but its pc Friday... As Roy says, its not about trying to explain the what soul is really, its letting us all know what soul is to you... I find my soul in so many different ways.. It can be the expression for brief moment on a persons face as the tune plays, that moment can remain for a lifetime in my memory.. The first time i was ever on the dancefloor the same time as my wife dancing to the Rock Masters.. Having a quite moment and playing " just as long as you need me" the Four tops after hearing of the death of Levi Stubbs... The first time i ever heard Pyramid at Warrington Parr Hall.. Sitting with frinds in an upstairs bedroom and hearing Lou Rawls, "DEAD END STREET" for the first time, plenty jazz fags and 12 repeats later and still it was not enough.. When Linda Jones sings " Dont Go ".... When Fontella Bass sings "Talkin about freedom ", ....when the Captions say " turn out the lights".... when Jo Wallace played " let me down easy" at 4am at the 100 club in the middle of a uptempo set.. When you hear Jessie Fisher sing " losing a beginner"...when you see the footage of Aretha on stage and last appearance of Levis Stubbs and his tears .... to drop the needle on a record and watch a room full of people come together for the best 2 and a half mins of your life.. When you are out on the dancefloor and in your zone, you feel every second of the song while floating on a cloud.. etc etc etc... All of these are moments of real soul for me, the kind of moments that tell me i am truely blessed to listen to the music from the gods and to share some time with others who feel what i feel.... These and many more are moments of soul that can last a lifetime.... Have a nice weekend and get some soul in your veins xxxxxxxxxx
