Symposium on Soul Music and Community - Manchester 29th June 2012
Little-stevie commented on Stereojet's article in News Archives
A few folk have said the link don't work to register for the conference, if you have any problems then drop me a message, i will pass on any names.... Not sure what to expect, have always given these things are miss in the pass, will pop my head in the door during the day i guess... Still a couple of dj spots available for the after event over the road at the Nags head, as i said above, a cross section of northern required for the people at the conference and invited guests... Drop us a line if interested.. Cheers -
If you don't think some people are ignorant or stupid then you should get out more

I am sure the papers will be made available, aint that standard with these events... With regards to if being recorded, i will also ask t Katie.. Got a couple of lads along to play some tunes afterwards, anymore want to play, no big fuss, just a cross section northern soul and a few drinks afterwards.. Drop us a line if you would like to play.. cheers -
Mr Wiggy.. I do try to understand posts but yours make my head spin... .. All comments are taken on board but i do think that folk need to have been out and about around this world of soul before posting certain comments, it make little sense to comment on the state of anything if you only go to the end of the street for your fix.. There is a world out there and if you look you hard enough i am sure you will find something to your liking...

"Taste" ....."Good stuff"...... One mans dogs bollocks is another mans dog poo.... this topic too will drive the topic well away from the original question...
-
I thought the title said "pornography at northern soul events "... I was about to post about them dvds doing the rounds that feature our canine freinds Sorry.. very off topic...
-
Your reply Matt will start the funky debate again thats another topic of real passion but not the original question on this topic... Just thought i would drop that in because you are sure to get a reply to your post mate....
-
Sad to say on topics such as this its impossible for some to " play nicely "..... It brings forth a passion like no other.. There are more than enough places that play original format for me, not enough time to get around all these with home life/ work/ finances etc etc. Also the playing of original records can be done without the night looking like a stamp collectors convention , i know many happy go lucky folk who can be rather jolly and good fun and they preach the original vinyl code..

Katie Milstone who runs this event from the MMU is a good freind and a lifelong fan of Northern soul too... Not something for everyone i am sure, as with most things... I will open our little club over the road from 8pm to have a night of music after the event.. If you are a northern soul collector/ dj then drop me a line if you would like to play.. A cross section of Northern soul would be required to represent this event.. Its a free event, if you would like to come along to the day event then details above to add your name... If you would like to come to the soul event only then drop me a line, its a free event but we will have a guest list.... Numbers are pretty tight with us only using the front room at the Nags head.. Don't delay.... Cheers -
It takes 3 pages for the voice of reason At our events its very rare to see playlists, maybe something to do with getting out there and getting the experience live, supporting events, not just ticking off lists on a Monday in lookbacks... As Mike says, a few tunes talked about in a lookback can give a real good feel of the night, playlist after playlist alone can never give you a real flavour of how the reaction was... We do some profiles of djs and ask them to drop a few tunes that are their flavour of the month at the moment before events, this gives folk ample chance to see what the event is about.... As said by others, word of mouth also is worth a thousand flyers.. This topic like many others can get swamped with various views, all correct i guess but at odds with each other, we have the full spectrum of people in this broad church from the up tempo terrorists to the nowt so fast and furious brigade Many times playlists serve the record dealers who never go to events, they cherry pick from others playlists, also the lazy wanna be djs who don't attend the event, these too just cherry pick and no original thoughts of their own... Pays your money at the door and support the event at least.. My views alone of course, we all do it the way we want and long may that continue, maybe like most things a balance is good, the odd playlist and talk about certain records in lookbacks maybe but wanting/ expecting every dj to supply a playlist As some folk will know, a certain tune on a playlist alone can give little or no feel as to how it was in them few mins that it was played, did it take the roof off or have a affect of a fire alarm and clear the building, did it get have folk running tripping over tables to get to the dancefloor or have them getting out a crossword puzzle book.... These questions are best answered by folk getting out there and getting the experience in the flesh... If i been at event where a dj can play a set of classic soul records in a spot, not somethiing i may want most of the time but every bit as good as any other djs that night, the classics spot lit up the event and set the scene for the rest of the evening, the dj did what was needed at the time, this set in the context of a playlist would mean next to nothing just read by the stay away crowd on a Monday.. More customers, not just the djs/ promoters talking about tunes in lookbacks, this can give a true flavour of an event for wanna be customers... Just a thought

Sometimes we say i when we mean we.. II am sure Phil aint trying to take all the credit himself, its clear on the flyer/ promotion that it was a joint effort Just thought i would drop that message in before it turns into something other than what the thread is about A feel good film it seems and a nice way to pay respects to history of what we hold so dear.. -
A topic that comes up time and time again with the ammount of events... No need for this to go tits up, just some brief feedback on what was a very very busy bank holiday weekend with extra day, Queens Jubilee events, kids off school, summer holidays etc etc etc.... Always good for us doing promotions to pick up on feedback.. Its very clear that the ammount of events and cash are playing a big part in the attendance of events.. Something as got to give as shown by Lifeline thread on here... So many weekenders been already and many many more to come.. Something as got to give i guess.... In Manchester we had a number of events.. My own little club with its 1st Birthday... Numbers up a touch with it being the anniversary, was hoping for extra numbers but more than happy WITH SO MUCH ON.... Manchester European soul weekend with Saturday day event, Saturday niter, 12 hour Sunday all dayer, Monday all dayer??? ( was only there Sunday, great venue, quality music and nice crowd/ vibe but not huge numbers.. Manchester MOHO Monday 2 room all niter???? Feedback from other parts of the country??? No need for chapter and verse, we have our own events feedback, just an brief on numbers and expectations... I guess it will be the same as most weekends in that some will be packed, some will be ok and others will struggle.. Feedback helps us in forward planning of events, a good promoter does listen to the punters... Regards
