  1. Yes indeed, them 2 choices very very average indeed.... Funk edged soul that we like and what some call " funky northern can be worlds apart... I have seen record dealers put that " funky northern" title on boxes to try and sell what in the main are very average tunes TO ME that have gone unsold for years.... Its a funny old game...
  2. Indeed... Rob/ Andy.. Sad to say we have too many fractures among the rare soul crowd to bring it all together now.. Promoters of rare soul would have to sit round a table and smoke the peace pipe and bring all on side.. Not sure that is ever gonna happen...
  3. A good point well made Marc.... Petes comment regarding Southern soul , yet again another catagory ... What would my experience be without some southern tinted soul, quite limited really.....
  4. Thats deep disco ..... another catagory..
  5. Pedestrian Southern Soul no no, not another catagory
  6. Give some examples of what you mean to make it clear for replies??? Do you mean..... You don't think they are funk edged or they are poor funk edged tracks???
  7. Its a very fine line indeed, the solid funk track posted by Tim above is what many would think of as tooooooooo funky or out and out funk..... I was told the same about the tune below by some folk.. Its a great funk edged soul track with balls to me but to some its funky shite, just like the RnB debate i guess in many ways....
  8. A problem indeed mate at many venues i guess, as i said horses for courses.... To me its just heaven, to others its hell i guess, aint that the same with many tunes....
  9. A problem or a challenge??? Soul is like life itself, i need a challenge at times..
  10. Indeed it as Kev but it shows we all have different ears...
  11. Not a dancer.... Indeed it is to our lot.. Also seen it work in the huge main room in Hamburg... The key with many of the above is the skill of a dj to mix them into a set that keeps the floor going, can work when you know your crowd but fall on its arse at the wrong venue.... Horses for courses..... A bit of thought on what to play where or what djs to employ at what venues... Simples.. I am with Nev and quite a few others, love my soul in many forms and want to hear it all in one room.... The good thing about the ammount of venues is that we can all get our fix of soul the way we like it.... Go easy folks, its a Monday
  12. The 4 tops..... Reach Out..... That really got me started, did my dance practice to that and George Benson "On Broadway".... Happy days.....
  13. I would settle for a lot less Joan ..... A topic of interest indeed.....
  14. Indeed mate, enough out there already, maybe weekenders look at other alternate music for sections of weekend if they feel there is a demand, come together with whats on offer, another weekend will just splinter what is already a very fractured scene... Just a thought.....
  15. Sad to say, no space at all on the calendar really... Maybe a small event like the rare soul weekends that John Mills did in North Wales but can't see anything on a large scale unless promoters put heads together and free up a weekend.. Then you have the whats really rare and whats not brigade Its a funny old game!
  16. Dj times for the evening event... 8pm to 1am... Upstairs at The Old Nags Head... Jacksons Row, off Deansgate... Manchester... M2 5WD... Got some names to add to guest list on the door.. A few places left if you drop me a message on here or on my facebook page... Looking forward to seeing a mixed crowd and a good section of Northern/ rare soul.... 8pm.... Matty Hill 8.45.....Sam McEwen...( Black Bee soul club..) 9.30.....Dave Rivers 10.15...Carl/ Maria Willingham 11.15... Paul Bailey ( Black Bee Soul Club ) 11.45... Steve Cato 12.30... Black Bee Soul club 1am.. close....
  17. Maybe take the thread back to what it was ??? always free to start a topic on your wigan memories or any other stuff... I guess people are drawn in by topic titles, i know that i am. . Then you click on the subject and its not about anything to do with that title it gets a touch boring i guess.... I have read all this topic and found it of interest but its wayyyyyyyyy past its sell by date....
  18. Not sure if this has been posted.. Another quality live event at the Band On The Wall.. Manchester... Maybe see a few of you there.... Any soul source members going??? Link below to event... https://bandonthewall...evvedents/3597/
  19. A good point Steve.. Keep it real and keep it live...
  20. I have missed them " huge mutant seagulls " Had some of the best times ever at this weekender, would i go back???? not sure .... Lets see whats in the package and feedback from promoters... It will be a huge task to get back the buzz of the 1st few years.. Time will tell...
  21. A very very good point well made Pete... I have always encouraged youth and new blood along to events for many many years, so many of these what you call not very exciting tunes Steve are just so to many who have not had your experience, so we try and get a balance to keep a club buzzing, a fine balancing act indeed many times.. I am happy with a blend of cutting edge and more familiar quality oldies, an example would be Waymond Hill " what will tomorrow bring on the cutting edge side and The Volumes" aint gonna give you up" on the quality oldies side.. That gives me and a mixed group of mates a balance, we want to dance more than sit around in our anoraks when out at events.. Its all words though aint it.. cutting edge?? to who?? one mans cutting edged is rinsed out to another crowd after its had 6 months of life and a good few plays , its a funny old game... A selection of what you are calling cutting edge Steve would help this debate..... Many of us are from different parts of the country/ different parts of the world too on here, cutting edge, rare, underplayed just like oldies can mean quite different things to many folks...
  22. Was i there that night, can'r remeber now... Many a good time at Tony's... Good point by Jocko, most folk did not like the camera being there, me included... Would like to see more footage from my early years on the scene now, just not much out there on film or in photo.. Go a pack of photos from Bradford Queens Hall, Warrington Parr Hall that i have never really shown on the net, will get them up one day....
  23. Had a few messages from folk going to the day event, asking for entry to night event, anyone booked in for the day event is on a list for the evening event... Only folk who want to come to the evening event need contact me, i will then put youn on a guest list... cheers
