  1. Kings Hall allnighter Derby 1978. Soul Sam played the Magnetics - Lady in Green, and emptied the dancefloor, I realised that moment that pushing the boundaries was what the music was all about for me. I've always admired Sam ever since. And a message to all D.J's, never let the dancefloor dictate what you want to play.
  2. Lee lamont ~ got to keep movin' ~ Challenge. Why does he seem to sing " Hide my Donkey well " ? John
  3. Well said Brett, Pester them D.J's, cause if you don't, they tend to play safe. Also pester promoters to put on Imaginative D.J's. Promoters tend to put on D.J's who might bring a few through the door, and also like to put D.J's on who run other venues, so they can D.J at theirs.
  4. I once played Freda Payne " Band of gold " at a wedding, and it was promptly pointed out to me that actually, the words to the song are all about the bride being ditched on her honeymoon, left all alone with a band of gold.............. Definatly NOT a good wedding song ! A good one I would say would be, Maurice Jackson .. Forever my love .. weiss DUCIE BRIDGE SATURDAY.......... BRING IT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. What about the MAY label......................
  6. iT'S ALL QUITE SIMPLE REALLY : Promoters without a clue, employing D.J's who havn't got a clue, playing played out tunes to punters who havn't got a clue. It would be nice if : Promoters with vision, employed D.J's with imagination, to play to punters with open minds. And if the punters don't like what they hear then tell them not to come back next month. If that means reduced numbers, so be it....... at least the scene stays soulful
  7. While we're talking about Rob Messer, He D.J'd up at Stoke last Friday night at Bidds, and did an absolute belting spot ........ Ree Flores " look into my heart " was one of the excellent tracks he played that springs to mind. Well done Rob........
  8. How many other Blue eyed soul girls can we name ? Was Murial day really Petula Clark using pseudonym ? Paula Parfitt springs to mind, Lorraine Silver, Lisa Stansfiled, Obvious ones there, how many more ? Nice topic Kolla.............
  9. How about Greater Experience, there's bragging for ya. The Futures, Gayle Adams, If they had made quality tracks instead of C***p ones, I wonder if they would have used a different name ?
  10. A big thank you and a huge pat on the back to the promoters & D.J's for putting on what I can only describe has an exceptional soul night at BIDDS last night. This was our first visit to the venue, and we were blown away by the AWESOME raresoul that was played. We also got a free C.D on the door when we arrived. Roger Banks, Carl willingham, Rob Messer, & Mace all played one after the other quality rare soul that I doubt could be equaled anywhere in the country last night. So if anyone asks if I went to the BIG ONE in Stoke this weekend I can answer yes !, and it was at BIDDS............ Thanks again guys

  17. I had a vinyl copy vocal / instrumental in my sales box for ages, I thought it was a boot, i had £4 on it. Then someone told me to stick £50 on it because it was an original.......... Then spookily I sold it.
  18. Maybe Butch could change his name to Neo, like in the Matrix.
  19. Yes it does have that effect unfortunatly, now you've got me started. Can anybody tell me how you identify an original copy of the record ?
  20. David Ruffin, without a doubt the best ever Temp. a raw talent never to be replaced. Favourite Track...... I wish it would rain.

  23. Maybe you should have refused to pay the Bill until you found out who it was. Could be an undiscovered Acetate that only the restaurant owner has, maybe he'll sell it for a fiver !. I heard a motwnesque record a while back, that bugged me for ages, I was convinced it was Kim Weston. Turned out to be The Ad libs...Knocking at my heart...( Unissued ) of course !. Bloody brilliant record. John
  24. Took me a while to get into it but much prefer it to alot of stuff that get's played. Dislikes ( played in the name of RnB ) are : Lou Lawton ....Nick nack patty wack. Charles Sheffield... 25. Great news for us non smokers on the scene, Th Union club at Nottingham has adopted a No Smoking policy, If you want a ciggy, you have to go out side. Let's hope other venues follow their example, now the would be a forward step !
