  1. Nice choice steve, for me though if we are talking about cremation, it would have to be ROBBY LAWSON ~ BURNING SENSATION.............OOOPS JM
  2. BOB COLLINS AND THE FABULOUS FIVE " MY ONE AND GIRL " b/w " INVENTORY ON HEARTACHES " MAINLINE. MEGA, MEGA , MEGA, RECORD.........
  3. Writs in the post Brett .......... only joking. Jm
  4. Hi Sebastian, I'll ask about, but like I say they seem to be a bit scarce. I think Tim Brown had one at one time for sale, but not sure if he still as. John
  5. The Fabulous peps ... gypsy woman, is one of my all time fav' tracks..... alot of people say it ain't a patch on The Impressions, however, I love it for it's rawness, rough edges and all, perfect Detroit, make the hairs on my neck stand on end
  6. HI Brett nice of you to join in on this one mate, The Cahmeres track first, I first heard on a tape that came from a guy who used to go to Stafford, so i think it's from that era. I've never seen an issue, as far as i'm aware issues of other records on this label are generaly purple with silver letters, never seen the Cashmeres though. As regards to it being the same group as one that sang Showstopper, thats up for debate, It definatly sounds similar to me, however I'd edge on to side of the fence and say it is not. It is as I have said an absolute storming track, and given the chance right venue, open minded crowd, i'd play it. As for your two mate, you've got the better of me there, don't know em' we'll have to do a tape swap, tell you what i'll swap one with you at Ponds forge next week. John
  7. Here's a forgotten track, hardly ever heard nowadays.. The Cashmeres on Ninandy. First heard it about 3 or 4 years ago, blew me away, found a copy for £50, don't think i've seen another since. Does anyone else know it ? It's a real stormer of a track.
  8. Roy Hamilton was a truly wonderful soul singer with a fantastic voice, I'm inclined to agree with stoneisland on this one though. I had a black u.s issue of the record for many years cost me £3 when I bought it, sold it for £125 ! and I don't miss it ........ that shouldn't depreciate the fact of what a great artist he was.
  9. Nice one Chalky, I new they were there for some reason, Ha ha.........
  10. A Clue please.................
  11. As long as they are used correctly, throwing them on tables in the vain hope someone might pick one up, is a waste of time IMO, I also think people who walk up to you and thrust one in your hand without saying a word is also a no,no, i just screw them up and chuck them on the floor. To actually take the time to speak to people and tell them about your venue while handing them out is surely the best way. JM
  12. Buena Vista's ?
  13. I actually sometimes collect up the clean A4 flyers on the way out of a venue at the end of a night. My 7 year old son loves to draw pictures and they are excellent for that. Can't think of anything else they are good for though..... JM
  14. Sorry but I find flyers really annoying, every venue you go to they scatterred everywhere, soaked in beer, an untidy mess. Once again I think as an underground scene, it should be word of mouth, I never pick up flyers, I know roughly 2 to 3 weeks a head where i'm going, and of course there is good old Soul Source if you need to check anything. Hopefully it's the History book for flyers..... John
  15. A work colleague, handed me this picture today, apparently this guy does the pubs and clubs around the Nottingham area under the name " The Soulman ". I've never seen him, so can't say if he's any good.
  16. Yes Steve count me in mate, for every Northern dance track i buy, I collect at least 5 slowies, got boxes full of em' can't hear enough of it. unfortunatly I'm stuck with tapes cause I can't burn vinyl onto c.d, so if you want swaps lets do it ! To anyone, if you send me your name and address to me through the PM facility, i'll post a tape, and you send me one in return. John
  17. Nice selection there Steve, Thinks for me, i'd have to go for the Hesitations ..." Is this the way to treat a girl " ... GWP, which I happened to play at Soulsville on Saturday night...........also Oh about Gwen Owens ... " Still true to you ", which is the flip to "Just say you're wanted and needed" magical track.
  18. Strange that Pete, Betty lloyd sprung into my mind, I got mine for about £60 when they all turned up in 93', glad I held onto it, still think it's one of the best Detroit tracks ever.........
  19. "Two Loves have I". Must be a contender, the B.side is " Shake rattle & roll " Excellent Beat ballad though.... Also Berry Gordy's Anna & Melody labels also date from the late 50's... For me Lamont Dozier " Dearest One " the pick of the bunch there. Think some of the Matador's tracks are very old also. John
  20. Reluctant to get involved in this one, cause last week I posted a topic about white artists, and got hammered for saying soul music should be black........ So I suppose it's no suprise to all when I say, Soul music is about vocal expression, can't understand how an instrumental alone can be soulful. However I do see the attraction of instrumentals, especially if you are a dancer. If i Was to pick a fav' instrumental, I'd have to say " BARI TRACK" although I think the vocal is better ( Rose Battiste ).
  21. Excellent idea for a topic, I had a similar conversation the other week with Mick H, he said the same, sometimes it's the hunting down the record and then getting it that's often the biggest thrill........ once in your collection it gathers dust until you decide to let it go, maybe trade it for another holy grail. It is a bit of a collectors only topic this one, and you need to be a collector to understand. But then I thought Soul Source was a collectors website anyway.... John
  22. Once again thank you for everyone who has posted replies to this topic, many varied views.......... oh yes almost forgot, Stoneisland, you have no taste at all. mate ( Lol ) Joannie Summers over the Magictones, you need help !
  23. O.K so this is my first input since I started the topic yesterday, and I've just spent the last 20 minutes or so reading through the replies. A big thanks to all for taking time to reply and give their opinion. Been giving this some thought since yesterday, and although I consider myself a bit of a soul purist, and believe that soul music is Black music, I do feel that a white artist who genuinly attempts to sing Soul, and makes a good attempt without bringing the music into disripute should be given respect. Think what got my back up at work yesterday was a guy who tried to say that Nothern soul was blue eyed soul, and that's why white people followed it and not many black people..... not correct IMO ! Once again it brings us back to that awful era of Wigan 1975 ish, when groups like Wigan Ovation, were appearing on top of the pops singing ski ing in the snow, and unfortunatly some peoples idea of Northern Soul seems to stem from that time. IMO that type of white pop trash damaged the scenes image and gave a false impression of what the music was really about, a kind of bastardization of the music if there is such a word. I do feel that some people who have returned to the scene over the last few years still believe that the mid to late 70's somehow where the great years of the music, and alot of the tracks played at that time were by white artists. I've always rebelled against that opinion, and I do honestly believe that the best Soul records were made by black artists......... John M
  24. Just had a heated debate at work about wether a white singer can sing soul music. As a soul purist, a Soul record must be sung by a Black artist ............ what opinions on this one ?
