  1. Just a thought here, alot of lesser known D.j's would play for nothing, or just petrol money, because they just love to spin thier tunes. If promoters put so called big names on they have to fork out £100 upwards in some cases........ So surely by putting lesser names on it doesn't eat into the profits. When you take into account that there is no evidence that Well known names do attract crowds, I really don't understand why promoters fall over themselves to put on these so called big names on. JM
  2. Did you know it's the same record as Jean Battle..I've got to come in...Clintone. I had both versions up until recently, I flogged the Jean Battle on ebay, and traded the Ebony Essence with Andy Dyson about 9 months ago, who know's he may still have it
  3. Jimmy Raye......Philly dog around the world....KKC JM
  4. Thanks Shute....... going to have a look. JM
  5. Top reply Andy, I do understand how difficult promoting a venues is. What I would say however is that many top D.J's although good, can be predictable, and long term having D.J's playing the same stuff will be eventually be destructive both to the venue and also the scene, a balance of known and lesser known names is what is needed. Once again thanks for the input, much appreciated. JM
  6. A good D.J with imagination, that's a great combination. JM
  7. Been playing this at home recently from a tape, and it has really grown on me. I've done a few internet search's but drew a blank. can anyone help me out with this one. John M
  8. No problem mate, I'm no soul police, but I know where your coming from. Never going to change things, there will always be different tastes on the scene. Not going to Keele tonight, I've been a bit disappointed with the venue over the last year, so going up to Manchester tonight to the Greatstone hotel. Have a good un' JM
  9. We going to make the trip upto manchester tonight, Greatstone hotel. Might do Keele on the way back, but doubtful. JM
  10. Wish I was there having a beer with you mate..... Maybe at saturday dinner venue could be an idea for the future. Jm
  11. How is your recovery coming along Shane ?
  12. Brett, I hope this is not another example of internet grooming..
  13. See where your coming from Andy, and I do appreciate your opinion. However, I'm a total soul snob and proud of it. I can't stand poppy type Northern, no doubt people are going to jump in and give me a verbal bashing, but like i said can't stand the pop stuff, just find it really embarrassing, got to keep the SOUL in Northern IMO. I got onto the scene in 77' and I hated the pop stuff then, and still do. JM
  14. Yes I know, infact I played that at Rhyl back in march when i spun a few in the lounge......excellent track. JM
  15. I would like one too. and will offer you more than Jamie JM
  16. Johnny Sayles ..Can't get enough of your love...St.Lawrence ( always has, and still get's me on the dance floor, pure Northern ) Chi-lites...Love Bandit...Deran... ( Oh Yes ! ) Phyliss Brown...Oh Baby...Rainbo ( so good ) Jm
  17. A big thanks to you Dave for your input, and I Do understand where you are coming from, I had honestly forgot about Rhyl earlier this year. Magical memories from that weekend too, the stuff played in the lounge during the day was some of the best stuff i've ever heard, and that includes your stuff Dave. JM
  18. My head is about ready to fall off with all the nods of agreement from the last few posts, a big thank you to the SSCDT for getting involved in this one. I really think it is about time promoters took more of a responsibility in bringing through lesser name Jocks, otherwise as Chalky said the scene is going to become stale and predictable, maybe it already has !. Thanks Alison for the mention there , i'm looking forward to the 100club next month when you are on, I know you'll do us proud. I also would like to mention again Cliff Steele, I was at Rugby last month and he played and absolutly superb crossover 70's modern spot, followed by Lenny Dopson 2 hours of pure soul heaven. Off course let us not forget that night back in October when Soulsville had there anniversary up at Leeds, Not a top name in sight, but hour after hour of top quality Northern & crossover soul....magical memories. So back to the thread, I honestly beleive that promoters put big names on the Bill purely because thier names are Familiar, and have past reputation.......But if its quality music you want to have played at your venue there are plenty alternative options out there, don't be short sighted and overlook them. JM
  19. Thanks for that Chalky, So my next question is, if that is the case why do certain D.J's " Big Names " seem to get booked more regular than others. I also find that some top names do tend to be predictable with thier playlists !. Trying very hard not to be controversial here...... JM
  20. Thanks for your input into the topic Andy, much appreciated.
  21. Put your name in last night Jamie, just didn't show on the post Honest John
  22. Me thinks your right stevie....... It would be nice if promoters had two guests on instead of one, then they could have a big name plus a lesser known name, this would give other D.J's a chance to prove themselves. See you saturday mate JM
  23. Good example here, Keele is on this saturday, and has a top notch line up, yet there are other nighters on also, some people will go to the other nighters......so not everyone is attracted by the cream.
