  2. Ends today if you want to act on this very rare and very much under the radar stunning New Orleans dancer….. Message any questions or to make an offer. Joe Wilson – I’m her only man – White Cliffs 242 M- OFFERS Minimum offer made, ball rolling, thank you. Studio owner Cosimo Matassa set up Dover Records as an all-encompassing enterprise to provide a one-stop operation that handled recording, pressing, distribution, marketing, promotion and sales for a whole host of labels including A.B.S., Big Deal, Deesu, Hot-Line, Mar-A-thon, Nola and Shagg the security of strength in numbers. This “Crescent City” flag of convenience has contributed significantly to the Northern scene with outstanding tracks from short or more extensive catalogues, and in this case still throwing up more. Taking on the role of President, Matassa had already added the White Cliffs label to a growing ‘Big Easy’ portfolio, working with some of New Orleans most renowned owners and producers, people like Wardell Quezergue, Marty Lewis, Allen Toussaint, Marshall Sehorn and Merle Spears, who would all benefit from Dover’s joined up approach and resulting successes. Matassa had named the White Cliffs label and wider business on the back of his affection for the English sea port and its famous coastline. The music policy was considered by many at the time as scattergun, with a variety of R&B, Soul, Garage and Gospel releases. Suffice to say there does not appear to be much information about most acts, including Joe Wilson, who’s trio of releases on this label are still to this day relatively unknown. Don & Ron suffered for many years, filed away in too few collections, only coming to the fore as tastes and demand changed, now of course a very in demand record appearing on many wants lists. Back to Joe, very little information has surfaced, a sparse discography grown over over 2-3 decades, during which he continued his relationship with Wardell Q on various labels and projects, ultimately leading to several unreleased tracks finally emerging on the Malaco Soul Brothers CD, contributing alongside fellow artists Chuck Brooks and George Soule. Eventually he slipped back into obscurity, and possibly out of touch since Katrina. Like many in the 60s, he did the rounds, club to club before landing a recording contract with White Cliffs Publishing for which he compiled 3 releases, comprising of 2 notable deep soul ballads and 2 up-tempo dancers. The later “Headed for a fall” was once touted as dance floor killer, but to my ears is a bland affair. The earlier “I’m her only man” on the other hand and in my opinion is in a different league. Evidence from chat forums by those familiar with this track, seem to echo my view. Joe has a unique vocal style, reminding me of another Joe, Sir Joe on Ru-Jac, the likeness is uncanny. This is real deal Northern, beguiling drum and subtle guitar intro, then BAM! the transition through a tumultuous horn fanfare, quirky guitar chords, and into the raw and unique R&B tinged voice that amplifies the excellent storyline that carries right through an energetic dance track that has decades of life in it. Not fancy or over produced, and at times pitchy, but none the less – fresh breathtaking soul in a day and age when oldies are, what it says on the tin, “nothing new”. I want to say the vinyl is near mint, but I’m conservative so I'll stick with mint minus. The yellow labels exhibit a grey mottled discoloration; however I would normally expect to find some suggestion of damp, water damage or wear on a labels surface where this occurs, BUT, they are absolutely silky smooth and glossy in the light as if they were like new as is the vinyl, the mottling is entirely under the label and has no detrimental effect on the exterior unless you are put off by cosmetics, for me its the equivalent of an X or sticker on the label in terms of no impact on overall condition. It’s one thing knowing this record, owning it is a different matter altogether, it just doesn’t turn up, so here’s your chance, take a punt now or forever hold your peace…….. seen on Facebook Rare Soul Sales forum in 2019, $3000 for Vg-. Current offer at 6pm on 30 Jan is £2500. Increments are set at £25 to avoid sniping. I will close on Mon 31 Jan at 9pm. Fully insured postage included, however overseas is on request. Cheers, Lee Fully insured postage included, however overseas is on request. Cheers, Lee Joe Wilson - I'm her only man.mp3

  4. Just the one tonight with a bit of a pitch…………. images and sound file included, PM any questions or to reserve. Click on the player and listen while you read Al Jarreau – Shake up / Boom boom – Raynard 10024 M- £800 You’ll be familiar with a host of commercial soul artists, including the likes of Al Green, Barry White, George Benson, Lionel Ritchie, Smokey Robinson and Luther Vandross to name a few, and that all of those chaps would have had to fight their way through the rough 60s induction to establish any semblance of a money earning career let alone be vaunted by the rock and roll hall of fame. One name not in that list but of the same ilk is Al Jarreau. Here’s a man who started out in 1961 and endured a dog eat dog music industry for an incredible 56 years, notching up the incredible accolade of being the only vocalist in history to win Grammy Awards in three different categories of Jazz, Pop, and R&B. In terms of mainstream music Al was Royalty, in terms of the Northern scene, unlike some of his previously mentioned contemporaries he is a relative stranger. It’s not surprising that as a Milwaukeean Al chose Dave Kennedys local Raynard label to record his earliest outings way back in 1964 and whilst this was accompanied by another release titled “Ska Bobbi / I am not afraid” they were not followed up by another recording anywhere before the early 70s. Here we have perhaps Al’s one and only Northern offering, and from intro to run off its a sparkling upbeat dance track that strikes a party vibe. The deep horn intro and buzzing vocals scream out for chairs to be vacated and the floor to be filled as quickly as you can, this good time feelin’ track is a fizzer, bubbling over with energy and oozing excitement throughout. The flip is more composed, not sedate, but brings out the quality of his vocals and it shouldn’t be sniffed at as decent side in its own right. I know of one astute DJ with a copy, there’s probably others but not many, so here's a golden opportunity to grab relatively unknown dancer. Rare to say the least, and a treasure trove piece for the Northern scene given his obvious absence from it and the enormity of his contribution to music over all those years. It was a toss up between auction or set sale! Vinyl is mint minus and those citrus infused labels are full of zest as they spiral on the turntable. 13. Bring some light into your day with this multicoloured 2 smoking barrels gem! Happy to send more images and sound file if required. Bobby Williams – I’ve only got myself to blame – Sure-Shot 5031 Promo Ex £440 Don Robey was the prolific owner and producer behind a conglomerate of label’s based in Houston, Texas that included Peacock, Back Beat, Duke, Sure-Shot and D.E.A.R, all hosting significant Soul content throughout their individual catalogues, and extending to Song Bird for the Gospel genre. Releases across all labels are likely to exceed a 1000, which is a massive enterprise in any label group, leaving a significant legacy to 50s, 60s and 70s musical history This powerhouse dancer released in 1967 was the last of Williams cuts for the label and remains to this day as sought after by collectors as much as DJs. This copy is in overall excellent shape with a minor edge lift, a couple of light lines, none of which affect play. PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £7.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £500) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee
  14. A double sider of immense proportions, which must be one of the best record box and dance floor fillers to own for 2 of the scenes most notable classics. Sound files on request. PM any questions of offers. Willie Hutch – Love runs out / The duck – Victor 1637 M- OFFERS I’ve been lucky enough to own a US west coast stock copy, a couple of east coast demos, and if I ever stumble across the French RCA I won’t be disappointed, but for me apart from the east coast stocker the Japanese is the rarest of all the formats unless I ever see “with my own eyes” a rumored Canadian Sparton release!!! But I think the latter’s a bit like my search for Sidney Barnes – I hurt on the other side – Red Bird issue, I’d like to think they exist and would like someone to prove they do? Gauntlet down to those that may be hoarding one….. To think, I was less than a year old when Willie penned these 2 tracks and along with the brilliant Gene Page and Lou Adler they brought these 2 quintessential Northern tracks together on one slab of plastic. We all know Hutch has provided us with some very collectable tunes, but his involvement in the music industry surpassed his own recording career, for example being hauled out of bed in the dead of night by Motown’s Hal Davis to help compose a track that Berry Gordy didn’t like. By the deadline of 8am that morning the Jackson 5’s “I’ll be there” fronted by a 12 year old Michael Jackson was destined to become the biggest selling Motown single at the time. Gordy hired Hutch, who for over 20 years influenced some of the biggest names Hitsville had on the books. I retain my own copy; it came from the Philippines, but that was some time ago and it’s taken me many years to track another down just so I could offer this resplendent piece of art up to the Soul scene. Mint minus Japanese Victor (RCA) tri-center complete with its beautifully colourful and mesmeric birth sleeve and pop pickers lyric sheet. Labels are clean and the uncanny Spitfire 3 blade propeller like centre intact. Minimum offer £2000. Will run until Monday 1st November at 9pm UK unless I like one in between. 22. On the basis that La Reine flew out, here’s one more to get you hot and sweaty before close of play! Jesse Davis – There’s room for me – Revere NM £1300 No need to give you the lowdown on Jesse when Dave Flynn’s Anoraks Corner presents the gospel truth and straight from the lips of Jesse’s other half Diane. It is fantastic reading and makes me reflect on one sobering point, that Jesse has kept at least one copy of each of his releases for the benefit of his children and grandchildren, what a legacy he will leave. We know that numerous 60’s Soul artists have been painstakingly tracked down and go on to provide a picture of a sometimes embattled life, during which they have neglected to keep, lost or sold on the vinyl that would have been their lasting memento of their time and greatness. This Arthur Wright influenced Los Angeles dancer still hasn’t turned up in numbers. It remains rare and even more attractive by the accompanying picture sleeve, which may be one for the memorabilia enthusiasts more than DJs. Immaculate near mint condition on vinyl and just light signs of handling on the sleeve. Note the first name spelling on label versus sleeve! An impeccable tune for those with impeccable taste. PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage £10.65 - Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £2500) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee

  23. Get you lips around this fabulous femme mid-tempo in its rarest form Sound file available on request, PM any questions or to reserve. La Reine La Mar – That’s not the way to love – Capitol 72322 M- £450 SOLD The exotically named La Reine La Mar is yet another enigma of the Northern soul scene, a common example of a one non-hit wonder. Given this young lady’s résumé I am surprised she hasn’t recorded more. From the off, she demonstrates the intellect, style, talent and stamina required to forge a singing career but also go on to run the whole damn business. By day this 60s super heroine is a qualified Physiologist and Biochemist, by night a winner of beauty pageants and promising local singer, and in her spare time an accomplished competition swimmer and runner. The only comparison I have encountered with such a glowing CV beyond the music industry is our learned friend Hayes Cotton. And quite literally there’s even more strings to the bow, being a competent musician on piano, clarinet and guitar. As far as her short lived recording career goes, its possible that the lack of success around the release of the New York based Cloud 45 in 1965, hosting “That’s not the way to love” as the official B side may have deterred her from pursuing solo success because she later appears in a mixed choir who were also recorded in New Jersey and active in live settings. Cloud 503 has been collectable for some time, but the Canadian Capitol release has remained nearly unknown and definitely under the radar with only a small number of copies coming to market over the intervening 55 or so years. Marion Stewart was a benefactor of the fabulous backing track, using it as the platform for “I must be losing you” on the “R” label, which was actually WAMS in Wilmington Wax to Watch in July 1967, a reminder of how localised these releases actually were. Prime mint minus condition on vinyl and labels, and so very rare, attractive and elusive even to Canadian label collectors on this format. 24. reality check, sold a stock and demo copy of mccoy in the last year, 175 stock, 225 demo, could have asked more but no more than 25 on each and interest was moderate, Manny's prices don't reflect what you can pick things up for in the forums if you keep your eyes peeled
