  1. Fantastic, like pieces in a jigsaw seeing footage of more and more of these rare soul artists in action
  2. Over to the east coast and the Carolinas to be precise, another gorgeous and hard to find 45 in great shape….. PM any questions or to reserve Moses Dillard & the Dynamic Showmen – I’ll pay the price – Mark V 20-66 Ex+ £750 SOLD Born in Greenville, South Carolina, this prolific Otis Redding discovery could boast a remarkable career. Not only did he lead the Dynamic Showmen in his early days, he teamed up with James Moore, forming Moses and Joshua. His hits on Mala during 66-67 included “My elusive dreams from” and “Get out of my heart”, then in 68 he recorded with the Sons of Moses on their monster instrumental “Soul symphony” on Coral. Moses was also a renowned session guitarist for the Muscle Shoals set up, and acts like James and Bobby Purify, Oscar Toney Jr and Mighty Sam, and then again front man for the Tex-Town Display in the 70’s. The 2 Mark V releases came out of the Mark V Studio in Greenville, which saw its fair share of acts pass through the doors, in fact Greenville was a hot bed for Soul talent, also the origin of one Martha Star, and Club Jamarta featured all the top bands in the area such as the Moses and his Dynamic Showmen and the Nomads of Mo-Groov fame. The Dynamic Showmen “Melvin Burton”, “Garland Paylen” and “James Boyce” who later married and managed Ann Sexton were superb backing for their brilliant front man, and whilst “I’ll pay the price” may be the trophy piece of these mid 60’s releases the words “Dillard”, “Showmen”, “Mark V” and “Greenville” are synonymous with 60’s soul quality. Vinyl is M- on both sides, bar a single small smudge on the top side (between 8 and 9 o'clock, 1/2 way through surface, it does not affect play at all. Labels M- and clean. PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: £8.50 - Special Delivery Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee Moses Dillard & Showmen - I'll pay the price.mp3
  3. Can't get away from the west coast, yet another stunner from the far side, the sort you promote in lights on a nearby Hollywood hillside….. *** I sold this a short while back, but latterly accepted its as trade against a bigger want for the original buyer, so its back on the market *** I'll leave the information in as it makes great reading for those who are interested. Hayes Cotton – Black wings have my angel / I’ll be waiting – Resist 504 M- £2000 SOLD The passing of Hayes Cotton Jr. in Nov 15 was without doubt a sad moment for his proud family and friends, but the man done good. Would you believe that this highly revered Northern Soul artist cherished the world over for 2 45’s and a single album release part designed Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport, at which I had the pleasure of passing through, nearly missing a flight after choosing a stroll through this massive complex having ignored the complimentary tram system put there for a reason! From his humble beginnings in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas, Hayes Junior, yep, his Dad was Hayes too, set his sights on fulfilling all his childhood dreams. Graduating through Woodland High and Prairie View University he earned a very respectable Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, this opened doors and opportunities for him, relocating to California to take up a role in the aerospace industry. His talent recognised, he moved on to become one of the first black American civil engineers in the Federal Aviation Administration, teaching airport planning for an amazing 25 years. Every civil engineer needs to let off steam, Hayes not only did this in the company of his cherished family, but also in the recording studio, he had a unique voice so why not? He won a contest for unsigned talent on R&B radio station KKBT “The Beat” in Los Angeles and became an overnight celebrity in Hollywood. His song “Secret Lover” also the title of his album was a popular tune played over the airwaves of L.A. for several years and was re-recorded by various recording artists. With his mounting fan base, Hayes became a regular guest of the KKBT “Morning show”, not just for his vocals but his wisdom and general knowledge. His earlier 60s recordings, which he wrote and sung were unearthed, eventually being picked up by our Grateful scene. The rest is our history and Hayes legacy. This Northern R&B rarity, with credits emanating from the Florence community south of LA, is one of 2 fabulous 45 releases by this awesome man, the earlier Claire label release I let go some years ago, but this Miles Grayson produced gem was reserved for a special occasion. It may be a little-known fact but there is an alternative take titled “Black wings has my angel” appearing on Resist and Acetates, however this version benefits from the harmonica intro. As a civil engineer, I guess we should expect he was going to tinker with various versions of his recordings much like he would his airport plans, always seeking perfection. Mint minus vinyl, dead wax stamp (maybe ALCO someone will know?), just very light background on run in heard through headphones, hardly discernable through speakers. Clean labels but top side glued marginally off-centre. You'll never need to upgrade even if your could! Fully insured UK postage included, overseas to be discussed. I would be consider part trade / cash, but as a word of caution my wants list is fairly short and succinct. I particular I want back "Bob & Gene - Sailboat - MoDo" and a few others, just ask if interested. PayPal by friends or add 4% please, bank transfer available. Cheers, Lee Hayes Cotton - Black wings has my angel.mp3 Hayes Cotton - I'll be waiting.mp3

  4. Okeh! here’s another fine example of delicious west coast release in tip top condition Message any questions or to reserve Chubby Checker – You just don’t know (what you do to me) – Parkway 965 WD M- £1100 SOLD Chubby was a commercial success, so it comes as no surprise that his catalogue would contain a dream Northern monster like this, CLASS! Vinyl condition is mint minus, clean labels, just a little ring wear on the ridge. Chubby Checker - You just don't know.mp3 PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Fully insured special delivery on me. Overseas on Request. Cheers, Lee
  5. Just the one example of a very sought after west coast oldie in tip top condition Message any questions or to reserve Virginia Blakly – Let nobody love me - Mojo 101 M- £1500 SOLD The scene is deprived of any information about this one hit “Northern” wonder, with only a Betty Willis release accompanying Blakly on this short-lived label. Oddly co-writer Jackie Avery was heavily involved in writing for other labels in Macon, Georgia around the late 60’s, so his presence on this Mojo outing appears to be a one-off or rare outing to a west coast label. This is a hugely desirable oldie, as rare as it has ever been, with a vinyl condition to die for, mint minus and clean labels, just the minor spindle wear, which I’m obliged to state, but that looks much better in the hand than under light. Virginia Blakly - Let nobody love you.mp3 Flash Off Flash On PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Fully insured special delivery on me. Overseas on Request. Cheers, Lee

  12. One spectacular Detroit double sider up for grabs, a scorcher just like the weather Please message any questions Jimmy Mack – My world is on fire / Go on – Palmer 5019 Promo M- Still the source of much discussion, was he from Chicago or Los Angeles? Just 2 soulful cities that boast a Jimmy Mack that can be linked to this mysterious figure. Jimmy McMillan who recorded “A woman is hard to understand” on Hamster circa 75, and James McEachin, an actor who lived and worked in Los Angeles for his whole career, owning Mack IV and producing the Fury’s. Neither stack up. Me, I just want to believe there’s some simple connection to the Motor City’s Martha Reeves and the Vandellas imploring Gordy label dancer, but then I’ve heard the tracks origins reach out to a writer drafted to Vietnam, who knows, maybe its one and the same, a solo artist with one solitary outing, never to have returned home after active service. All the hallmarks of quality, 2 top sides, one out and out Northern, the other hardly played mid-tempo crossover, a renowned label in Palmer owned by Palmer James of course and credits to Mike Valvano and Mike Terry. This is a super clean glossy 45, with just 3 superficial lines on “World” side but no effect on play. Labels clean, but an odd differing in shades of red! Jimmy Mack - My world is on fire.mp3 Jimmy Mack - Go on.mp3 A quick turnaround on this one, so opportunities to make an offer will close Thursday 5th July at 9pm. Minimum considered is £1400. Fully insured next day delivery included, always well wrapped and labelled. PayPal by gift or add 4% please, bank transfer on request. Cheers, Lee

  20. Wounded soldier here but this stunning Big Apple double sider is suitable for DJ plays. Message any questions or to reserve Carol Woods & Executives – Heart breaker / Ooh baby – Perfecto7 Vg / Vg- £200 HOLD This Brooklyn, New York group formed in 65, releasing this sassy sister soul scorcher in 68/69 on what looks like a one-off label, reportedly owned by writer Stanley Lucas, guitarist for Gladys Knight & Pips. Comfortably raw high-pitched vocals from Carol, a native of “Queens”, great male backing and searing hammond organ throughout. Superb group ballad on the flip. Vinyl looks well used, top side Vg with pops at the start but clears up loud and clear thereafter, the flip is virtually the same, although the ballad allows the pops to be more distinctive, hence the difference in grade for each side. A rare 45 that hardly shows up better than Vg/Vg+, let alone in M-, would be £400-500 if it was, but priced according to grade. Ideal for Dj-ing. 22. This might be a VERY elusive label filler, BUT only if you have all the other Giant rarities!!! It is an outstanding epic double sider, CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION PM any questions or to reserve Tony Hestor – Watch yourself / Just can’t leave you – Giant 707 NM £800 Just look at the credits, they speak volumes and put a real stamp of quality on this 45 - Pied Piper Productions, Hestor, Jack Ashford & Mike Terry, all members of Motown’s studio band the Funk Brothers. 2 sublime Detroit cuts on a near perfect slab of original 1st issue vinyl, far, far, far and away more difficult to turn up than the ten a penny Karate release, I would go as far as to say this may have been the keep in house label or rush copy for DJs. This beauty came directly from the files of the latter-day owner of Pied Piper who I chanced upon one glorious day. Condition is nigh on flawless, no vinyl deterioration, only a little bit of grub on the top label, something I never noticed for years until I looked at the blow up scans. PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: Special Delivery (Fully insured) Included Overseas to be discussed. Cheers, Lee
  23. Up for grabs just the one juicy Mid-West soul rarity, open your ears and feast on this thumping dancer with huge potential…... Message any questions or to reserve Holidays featuring Billy Wicks – I’m the one who really loves you – Thunder Ex+ £350 These aren’t your normal Holidays of Detroit fame, this little known outfit rom Springfield, Illinois, had 3 releases on the Dixie Label been 64-66. This 1967 Thunder label release is an RCA Custom matrix number, recorded at Golden Voice studios in South Pekin, Illinois. Billy Wicks was the front man for “Im the one (who really loves you)”, however his relationship was short lived as it became their last recording before the group changed their name to the Fugitives in Dec 67. The Fugitives went on to have a number of recordings on other Michigan and Illinois labels, most notably D-Town. What happened to Billy is a mystery. This this obscure gem of a northern soul dancer thrives on great lead vocals, pulsating male group backing and one hell of a sax break. With only a handful of copies surfacing over 40 plus years, the only other for sale today on Manny’s site, this has got some legs for the right DJ. Up for grabs just the one Mid-west rarity, open your ears and feast on this thumping dancer with huge potential…... Holidays feat. Billy Wicks - I'm the one (who really loves you).mp3 PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: £7.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee
  24. A few stragglers in tonight’s selection, who knows they may be of interest…. As ever, sound files available on request PM to ask any questions or reserve. Ben E. King – I can’t break the news – Atco 6390 Ex- £50 SOLD (Big voiced belter from the normally ballady “Stand by me” man, his northern output on this label is superb, plays better than the superficial lines suggest, sticker residue on label) Funky Sisters – Do it to it – Aurora 165 Ex+ £50 (Sassy feel good dancer, popular at the Torch early 70’s and Mrs M’s in the mid 70’s, minor label fold on title credits) Sons of Moses – Soul symphony – Coral 62549 M- £40 SOLD (Fabulous minty stock copy of this instrumental anthem) Cliff Nobles – My love is getting stronger – J-V 1034 Ex+ £500 SOLD (Powerhouse dancer in its rarer original local label format, nothing obtrusive on the vinyl, a near perfect play) Arabians – (Please) take a chance on me – Le Mans 004 WD Ex £300 SOLD (Superb group soul, one of the best label logos, couple of superficial marks, DNAP plays better at Ex+, light ring wear and X on label) Chuck Jackson – Any day now / The prophet – Pye International 7N. 25276 Ex- £30 SOLD (Outstanding beat ballad on UK with original centre) Johnny Praye – I can’t get too much love – Sidewalk 911 M- £1000 SOLD (M- vinyl, and only one very small feint mark on the run in, which does not affect play. All in all, it’s a top copy that comes with the fabled artistic company sleeve) Sam Dees – Lonely for you baby – SSS International 732 M- £550 SOLD (I met the man at Greenham Common, Newbury many moons ago, live performance to remember. Happy to provide scans and sound files for any 45. Message any questions or to reserve Jimmy Wallace – I’ll be back – Alpha 006 M- £725 now £675 SOLD This copy has a M- surface and playback, however it is pressed off-centre, but this is remedied by a purpose fit spindle adaptor, resulting in a perfect play as per the sound file. The labels would grade Ex for just a couple of handling smudges on the cool purple label. John E.
