  1. Light blue touch paper and stand well back thread ! Stoke is number 1 for regular attendances these days, no disputing that, but there are so many factors which count towards making an allnighter the number one, and having the most people through the door isn't the only thing that counts. Longevity, 100 Club wins by a long way, Number of allnighters held, 100 Club wins by a long way because it's 10 a year to Stoke's 5, Top DJ line up; well this one is subjective, but I can't think of a top name DJ that has appeared at Stoke, that hasn't appeared at the 100 Club (although I'm open to correction because I've only been attending the 100 Club twenty something years, and probably only half the Stoke niters) Breaking new sounds: Again the 100 Club without any argument. Getting the balance right bewtween Oldies, rare stuff, Seventies, Crossover, R & B, and new discoveries: Rugby for me, you get some of each at every niter Friendliness: Rugby wins it by miles, it seems to be the niter where everyone knows everyone else and they are all mates. Rugby is also up there for the best second room, but Gloucester is close behind. Radcliffe of course holds the crown for the most rooms, thus potentially the most choice of music, with five on the go throughout the night. Grottiest venue, but great night: Bidds It's the only time I've missed a niter because I had a dodgy stomach, I couldn't bear the thought of spending the night in those toilets. Of course it's all advertising hype, and the decision is personal, but I wouldn't like to split between Rugby and the 100 Club as the number 1 allnighters in the world. So if they are equal first, that means there is no number 2
  2. and that's from a DJ who does turn up at the beginning and stay till the end. Having said that I know Nige probably does more events than me these days. I tend to just do one a weekend now, and I know Nige sometimes does three (Although last weekend I did three if we are counting). It's not about how many hours you put in though, it's about enjoying yourself, it's a night out for Christ's sake. You do what you want to do Nige, you'll always have my respect.
  3. There were several prosecutions, and people served time for specifically bootlegging those obscure US Soul singles back in the Seventies Bob. So somebody showed enough interest.
  4. It's obviously never crossed your mind that those of us who do enjoy a drink but don't cause problems are just as annoyed about the drunks as you are. You are of course entitled to go and find an allnighter that doesnt have a bar, but as Chalky said, you'll struggle. In the mean time, if you see someone who is drunk and being a nuisance, tell the promoter, but leave those of us who are no problem alone, we're not the problem, so saying that anyone who likes a drink should "stay the fook away from you" is not the answer.
  5. I was supposed to go to the pub, and fell asleep on the settee ! Doh !
  6. Whilst not wishing to disagree with regard to your argument in the early days of the Northern Soul scene, I'd hazard a guess that over the ensuing forty years the most influential label has been Kent UK. Almost certainly in Europe, because in the main their part of the Northern Soul scne didn't really get going until the '80s, and not least because the Kent LPs became available in Europe. So what has the company issued ? Over 100 LPs, with tracks from hundreds of different US labels, including more than a few unrelesed tracks. Getting on for 100 singles, almost half of which contain classics, and half previously unreleased tracks which have becone classics. Over 300 CDs, thousands upon thousands of tracks, label focused CDs, artist focused CDs, and compilations of clasics, rarities, and unreleased tracks. So as I say, in the very early days Stateside and London American kickstarted the scene, and the whole collecting thing, but in the 40 years since, by breadth of variety, worldwide appeal, and sheer quantity, Kent UK has to have been the most influential label over the whole period of the Northern Soul Scene. And they are still going.

  10. The original Post was from 2008 though, so I guess the original sale is price is well out of date now anyway, All the recent additions have been about who was in what group when. And to be honest I find that a lot more interesting than a sale that took place four years ago.
  11. Right, so having waded through all the posts, I've changed the discography on SKM to look like this The Magnetics (From Detroit. Members: Bobby Peterson, Sharon Peterson, Tony Johnson (lead singer), Jackie Perkins and Candi Bell). When Tony Johnson left the group he teamed up with Tyrone Pickens to record as the duo Tony & Tyrone Allrite 620 - Where Are You / The Train - 1962 The Magnetics (From Detroit. Members: Gerald Mathis (lead singer), Bobby Peterson (the same singer who was in the Magnetics on Allrite), Elijah Davis, Ernest Newsome & William 'Pete' Crawford) This group was in fact The Volumes who were at the time in between contracts. Bonnie 107374 - Lady In Green / Heart You're Made Of Stone - 1965 The Magnetics (From Detroit. The third Detroit Magnetics are definitely a white sounding girl group, which according to Andy Rix, are not particularly good, which would account for the tracks never gaining an actual release.) Hitsville Acetate - Father Time Histville Acetate - Please Don't Go Away The Magnetics (From Philadelphia) (The Philadelphia Magnetics have as far as I know only the one release, although other releases on the Ra Sel label exist. John Anderson at Soul Bowl is rumoured to have several unreleased acetates by the group.) Ra-Sel R7-104 - I Have A Girl / Love And Devotion - 1967 The Magnetics (From Chicago The Chicago Magnetics releases have Lee McKinney as the lead singer, so are all the same group.) Sable 102 - When I'm With My Baby / Count The Days - 196? J-V 2501 - Oh Love / Wasting Time - 1969 Lee McKinney & The Magnetics (Same group from Chicago) Sable 104 - I'll Keep Holding On / Jackie Baby - 196? (M.F.Williams) "featuring" THE MAGNETICS vocal with instrumental accompaniment BY: The Sounds Unlimited. (From Richmond) Sound Trap 30391/2 - Let Me Comfort You / Good By My Love - ? Can anyone add anything more, such as the Chicago lineup ?
  12. PAT POWDRILL Pat Powdrill (born Birmingham, Alabama --- died 11-April-1996 --- cause: ?) Reprise 20,166 - I Only Came To Dance With You / Fell By The Wayside - 1963 Reprise 20,204 - Happy Anniversary / I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know - 1963 Reprise 0286 - Breaking Point / Luckiest Girl In Town - 1964 Downey 139 - Do It / I Can't Hear You - 1966 ( Group consisted of Pete Parker - keyboards, Ken Johnston - guitar, Dennis Trull - bass, Skip Metheny - drums) Pat Powdrill and The Powerdrills (members Pat Powdrill, Pete Parker - keyboards, Ken Johnston - guitar, Dennis Trull - bass, Skip Metheny - drums) Downey 141 - Together Forever* / They Are The Lonely - 1966 (promo copies issued in red vinyl) *co-written by Jack Stern and Barry White --- also recorded in 1967 by Viola Wills on Bronco 2053. The Ikettes (member Shellie Clark (later member of Honey Cone), Ann Thomas and Pat Powdrill (replacing P. P. Arnold)) 1966 The Ikettes (member Ann Thomas, Pat Powdrill and Vermettya Royster) 1966 The Ikettes (member Ann Thomas, Pat Powdrill and Maxanne Lewis (a. k. a. Paulette Parker on Duke)) 1967 The Ikettes (member Ann Thomas, Pat Powdrill, Maxanne Lewis and Jean Brown) Shalamar (members Pat Powdrill, ...........................................................) Soul Train 10885 - Uptown Festival (Part 1) / Uptown Festival (Part 2) - 1977 "For what it is worth, the band that did the "I Can't Hear You" and "Do It" cuts (music, claps, background vocals) that were released by Downey was: Pete Parker - keyboards Ken Johnston - guitar Dennis Trull - bass Skip Metheny - drums Those two tunes were recorded in Los Angeles in '66. Pat was so young and so full of life and energy then - she was just great. Thanks for bringing up the memories.I have no idea who the members were that did the other tunes listed. Thanks for all your effort to keep this music alive - Skip Metheny" "I just wanted to add to Skip's entry. The same group also recorded "Together Forever" and "They are The Lonely". I still have my copy. I was very excited to hear that these songs and all of the information about Pat are available on the internet. Thanks for your efforts, Dennis Trull"
  13. I doubt it, as the Magnetics who recorded the two acetates at Motown were a white sounding girl group.
  14. No address ? Then that's the bootleg issue !

  18. I agree Dave, demos are definitely much harder to come by in good condition. If anything i'd say you were on the low end of the price for a mint demo.
  19. The copy of The Vondells - Hey Girl, that I now own is the copy that Gary Rushbrooke originally played. He eventually sold it to Paul Everton, who sold it to me.
  20. See my last post I had Friday off work, so did quite a few updates Thursday and Friday. I missed the fact that it's also listed in the Renaldo Domino discography, as unreleased, so I'll go and change that now !
  21. It was always listed, but this particular combination of titles had '(Unreleased)' after it, until earlier this week
  22. Just spent twenty minutes reading that page Steve, great stuff. Frightening to think how many of those clubs I visited during the Seventies, especially as Leigh Casino came upo in another thread last weekend. The one I hadn't thougt of in years though was The Navada in Bolton, never could rollerskate properly, but there always seemd to be fit birds in there
  23. As far as I'm aware it's just the labels that are different.
  24. True, I do like men who play with odd shaped balls, but at least my national male costume is not a skirt It's an interesting question regarding the Bob & Earl record. There are actually quite a few other records listed on the site that I'm fairly sure were never actually released in a physical piece of vinyl format. However, the company records say they were released, so who am I to argue with that ? One example is Chess Records, I'm almost positive (As are many other collectors and discographers), that there are some singles listed in the Chess catalogue that don't physically exist. But what does that mean ? If the singers sang the song, and it was allocated a catalogue number do they they exist as Chess singles, albeit unreleased ? I don't know ? The view I have taken for SKM is simple (Bit like me really). If the catalogue lists it, it exists. It is almost impossible to prove a record doesn't exist, but just because a record hasn't been found doesn't mean it won't be. There might only be one box of 25 singles that are hidden away under forty years worth of rubbish in the back storeroom of what used to be a One-Stop in Chicago, and they are sitting there waiting to be found. So there's always a chance......... Now I realise this way of viewing things is extremely frustrating for label collectors because they end up searching for records that might not exist (There was a thread recently about Impression' singles that a collector had searched years for but never seen) but all I can say to those collectors is get a life Find something interesting to do with your lives like writing out lists of records
