  1. Just a quick note to remind any allnighter promoters that the Allnighter Planner is still there, and I am now accepting any dates for 2015. (And of course any for 2014 as well) So, if you run an allnighter, or weekender, and want it including, just send me a PM giving the date and the venue, and I'll include it. By the way, this isn't limited to UK venues either, so let's see an international flavour to the planner over the next couple of years.
  2. It was 90 copies, I remember Ady telling me it was something to do with having to pay VAT (or BMI / ASCAAP fees) if you produce more than 90 copies. 90 or less copies counts as a promotional tool not a commercial enterprise.
  3. Mine arrived today. It's from Italy according to the sticker on the packaging. No limited edition number, but the records are all nice thick vinyl compared to the first set I had, and all flat ! Haven't had chance to play them yet though, and I've just realised that I've thrown the packaging jn the bin, along with the dispatch / returns paperwork. So there's me rooting in the bin tomorrow morning before the rubbish is collected !
  4. You must be getting befuddled in your old age Simsy. At no point did he say "shut the fuck up". Ted Massey did on his FB status though.
  5. Where are all the doomsayers then ? Overall, nearly every post has been supportive of these young girls. So it should be as well ! How exciting that must have been for them, some of them will be needing an agent soon....I'm available by the way, no experience, but I'll work for 10% It's great music at the end of the day, and deserves to live on, not in the hands of a bunch of grumpy old men like me, but in the hearts of young kids who enjoy dancing, for the sheer exhilartion that it brings them !!!
  6. Hardly surprising. But I bet Universal will have been unable to keep track of what has been sent back, or what is missing singles, or what is warped and unplayable, so they won't know who has got what number by now. I've ordered a second box set at the £19.48 price, but it hasn't been dispatched yet, nearly a week after I paid for it, which is a little concerning.
  7. I believe it was a question. Based on the fact that the post started with the word "Why".
  8. That's unfair Dave. Until you explained it, I also thought that the promotional push had been badly timed, and had created interest that had subsequently fizzled out. Just because you know the reasons why, it doesn't mean we all do. Now you've explained the reasons behind needing to get a distribution deal it makes sense, but you can't criticise people for not knowing that.
  9. Chuck Jackson - What's With This Loneliness. It has to be one of the most sublime pieces of Sixties Soul never to have been released.
  10. There's one with exactly the same backing on a pink label....oh, hang on, that's the issue !
  11. I think you are missing the point Steve. Of course people made records to have a hit, and make money, but the point I was originally making was that not every artist made a records EXPECTING to have a 'POP' hit, which is what the original poster said. There are loads of artists who would never in a million years ever have had a 'pop' hit, they knew that, they still made records though.
  12. Oh I'm not arguing that he didn't have the hit. I'm questioning whether he would have had the hit without collaboration with U2. He might have, but the reality still remains that whilst most records are made with the idea of them becoming 'pop' hits, I would argue that in some genres of music creating a 'pop' hit isn't a consideration, and is most unlikely anyway. Blues, and B B king were just the examples I chose.
  13. So we are in reality back in the situation where even B B King, probably the most successful black American blues guitarist of modern times has never had a pop hit. To reiterate my initial assertion, would 'Albert "Smokestack" Noggins' & His Tub Thumping Cougar Boys Band', who recorded a couple of singles for the 'Backwoods Moonshine' label in 1967 in reality have been expecting them to become 'pop' hits. I think not. They probably hoped they might get a bit of local radio play and a couple of bookings on the back of it, and that was it. They just wanted to put a record out !
  14. I admit that I didn't know that. But was it a hit for B B King ? Or was it a hit because all the U2 fans bought it ?
  15. In essence I agree totally with what you have said here, but it also made me think did every artist want a pop hit ? I wonder whether some artists who only ever recorded Blues songs did want a pop hit ? they would certainly have wanted the money and fame that would generate, but is that what they were thinking when they recorded their song, or were they just thinking 'I have this great song, about the pain of my breakup with my woman' I want other people to hear it. Artists who only ever recorded Blues were by the very nature of the music, somewhat world weary, they would have realised that their songs were never going to make it to the top of the 'bubblegum' pop charts, so wouldn't have made songs with that as their aim. Perhaps they would all have aspired to reach the fame that B B King eventually managed, but did even the mighty B B King have any 'pop' hits ? I honestly don't know. Just something to think about on a cold, wet, and windy Wednesday morning. By the way, I'm quite happy to be shot down on this one, but you need to give reasons
  16. What a wonderful phrase Marc ! But it's really six opinions, because they will have a buying opinion, and a selling opinion !!!!!
  17. That's a more intelligent posting than some I've seen on here !
  18. I haven't read Blues & Soul for years now, (Does it still exist?) mostly because it actually contained precious little about Blues or Soul. Is Echoes any better ? Given that I have no interest in Lisa Stansfield, and haven't heard of the other acts on the front page do they have any relevence to Soul music ?
  19. "This is Len, he thinks he's normal" that would be a strange intro.......
  20. Now sorted on both. Soul Source members come up with the goods yet again ! Thanks guys.
  21. Morning guys, I've almost finished writing an article on the Jessica / Essica labels and need a couple of label scans to complete it. These are the two I need: Captown CTN4028 - C-Quents - It’s You And Me / Dearest One - 1966 Atlantic 2297 - Rozetta Johnson - That Hurts / It’s Nice To Know — 1965 Preferably both sides, but that's not desperately important. You can either post them here or send them to me as a Jpeg by PM. Thanks in advance
  22. Yes Dependent upon what they are and price. PM me.
  23. We spoke to Curtis Smith last Saturday night. he's confirmed as much of the information as he could remember, and added quite a bit of other information that now needs following up. A couple of things for now: The label is definitely St Louis Willie Small & Curtis Smith are one and the same person Curtis Smith has a long history as a guitarist, with a variety of bands going back to the late Fifties, in the Chicago area. He remembers playing guitar on 'Do The 45' and 'Just To Please You' by The Sharpees I'm currently writing up the interview notes into an article, which I'll post here with lot's of label scans, and artist photos.
  24. Yes, I've had a pint or two of Doombar in the recent past. Very enjoyable. Back on topic, I suspect the reason you haven't had many responses Malcolm is simply because there is now so much obscure stuff on the interweb that people can't think of anything they can't find.
