  1. Sorry to say Jimmy Conwell has been booted, on a very good look alike copy as well.
  2. This coming Saturday, the 12th.
  3. You're best bet would be Rugby niter next Saturday then, much closer to you.
  4. There will be quite a few who have a full set, me included.
  5. One that I always wondered about was The Gambrells - Jive Talk - on Pioneer. I seem to remember there was quite a lot of discussion within the West Midlands collectors about the legitimacy of the release when it went big for a while.
  6. I was chatting to Jessica about the commercialiasation of the scene as we know it and she mentioned this book Subculture: The Meaning of Style is a 1979 book by Dick Hebdige. The summary on Wikipedia contains a very telling few lines: The dominant society often sees these groups as radical, leading to fear, skepticism, and anxiety in their response. In some ways, this gives the subculture's resistance more power but only momentarily, because eventually entrepreneurs find a way to commodify the style and music of the subculture. Before long, elements of the subculture are available to the mainstream, i.e. Edwardian jackets of the Teddy boys. In this way, what was once subversive, rebellious, and radical, is now contained. For this reason, it is often the case that the moment when dominant society begins to recognize a subculture is the moment that the resistant power of the subculture begins to die
  7. Wow, I thought we just went out to dance and enjoy ourselves
  8. She is from the States, but she's probably as clueless about John Barrowman as I am.
  9. Lorraine, I haven't a clue who you are talking about, but you've put enough time and effort into music, and brought enjoyment into so many lives, to be able to like what you want and say to hell with those that don't like it. Go girl ! Drool all you want !!
  10. Yes but they are a couple of idiots The fact that I'm engaged to one, and the other is my best mate has no bearing on the matter though.
  11. Thanks guys, I still haven't found it though. I have a feeling that the clip on youtube isn't taken from the film, for one thing it doesn't look like it's in a church. Dundee Museums have a reference to it on their sirte, but no actual footage The Becks Futures Award lists Matt Stokes as the 2006 winner, but I believe the awards have been discontinued now, so they don't have their own website anymore. Thanks for the offer of an email Phil, but I'd guess it would be too large a file, and I'm not that desperate to see it if it means you have to go searching on an old laptop for it.
  12. This was a film that won a prize for Matt Stokes, the director. However, I don't think I've ever seen it. Can anyone point me in the direction of a copy via a link ? Thanks
  13. It was a Jamaican Sound System thing originally I believe.
  14. I would have loved to have been in the studio when Bobby Bland recorded the 'Two Steps From The Blues' album. Oooh that voice, those horns, I've over all a quiver !
  15. Temptations 'I wish it would rain'
  16. Will undoubtedly be on sale somewhere soon.
  17. A sense of formality....it wasn't a tea dance you know I know this seems trivial, but it always was a 'scene' and never was refered to as a 'movement', so to do so now is just wrong. As was most of the programme last night. I know that there were a lot of all nighter regulars on the programme, but I just got the feeling that they were being trotted out to do their party trick for the cameras....."here's spinning Sammy....go on Sammy, do a spin for us" And Sammy happily obliges. (And yes, I do know him, and yes he is still a much better dancer than I could ever have hoped to be). I guess it's all a matter of how you view your personal dignity. I would never appear on a show like that, because I don't want to, and it doesn't portray my weekend lifestyle as it really is, and made no attempt to. There again, some people think the things that happen on Corrie are real !
  18. Fortunately Russ, I can also use the OED Scene: e. slang (orig. U.S. Jazz slang and Beatniks' slang). A place where people of common interests meet or where a particular activity is carried on. Hence, more loosely, an activity or pursuit (esp. a fashionable or superior one); a situation, event, or experience; a way of life. Much more of an accurate description I feel.
  19. It never was, never has been, and never will be a 'Movement'. That's what I have when i go for a s*it in a morning !
  20. 122 users reading the thread right now LOL
  21. I couldn't resist this one.....The Golden Torch ! Boom boom !!!!
  22. What's that ? Having a shit in a mine ? You can be part of a 'movement' if you want to be, but I never was, and never will be part of the 'Northern Soul Movement'
  23. Probably my biggest complaint about Prestatyn is that the stalls weren't open long enough. What I mean is as soon as The Impressions had been on, all the clothes stalls etc packed up and went to bed. It was like being in one of those indoor markets where everything is closed !
  24. So you don't feel all alone, and despised by other members, I'll happily admit I bought Jessica a brand new sheepskin coat at Prestatyn. It cost me a quarter of what it would have cost me in a shop, and I'd promised her one for her Birthday, so I'll admit to buying stuff 'in the bazaar' as such. However, I don't want, or need, any items of crockery, or anything else really that have a clenched fist on them. So I just don't buy them. Some people obviously do need to be able to dress their babies up in Northern Soul bibs, so I let them. It's fairly obvious that if people didn't want this stuff, nobody would buy it, so nobody would sell it. Hence, there must be a demand.
