  1. Had the people who said it looked quite good been taking drugs by any chance ?
  2. Go here Linda Listing
  3. Just 89% :-)
  4. There probably was, but as you know, I have a thing about DJs that are booked who don't turn up, and don't bother notifying the promoters first. I'll be the first to admit I have on occasion had to cancel bookings, but this has always been with the full co-operation of the promoter (The most recent being when I cancelled a booking at Winsford because I was offered one in Italy, well come on....Winsford ? Italy ? You choose ! But the Italian booking was only confirmed after I had spoken to Sam Moore, and Sam being Sam said "Go to Italy"). Otherwise I have turned up for every booking I have taken, and consequently I have very little time for any DJ who takes a booking and then doesn't turn up. Big name, God, or not !
  5. It was the other Pete Smith, aka Pete The Pirate.
  6. I believe the German guys tried that last year. He didn't turn up.
  7. Being completely facetious.... I'd say Carl Willingham has to be the biggest name DJ. 14 letters. Beat that !
  8. Individually, I'd have to say no. And that includes Butch. However, a combination of the right names will add numbers to the door at any event.
  9. How hard can dave@soulfulkindamusic.net be to remember ? Doh !
  10. I'd just like to say thanks to anyone who has visited the Soulful Kinda Music Website over the last few years becasue the counter has just clicked over on 100,000 hits. Now I know in the real world of the internet some sites get that a day, but for me and my little website, that's one hell of a lot of people ! So thanks everyone !
  11. I've only known Derek a dozen years or so, and in that time I don't think I can remember him ever saying a bad word about anyone, and I can't remember anyone saying a bad word about him. Perhaps that's epitaph enough for anyone, but it doesn't go far enough. In the world of Northern Soul, Derek was a true gentleman, he quite regularly took warm up spots, and played Oldies that he knew would get the crowd going, yet through knowing Derek, I also know that his record collection was such that he could have held his own in any major allnighter, against virtually any DJ. It was quite funny sometimes, he'd hear a record being played at an allnighter and mutter to himself "I'm sure I've got one of these somewhere", and sure enough, next time you saw him, he'd dug a copy out. As an example, he found his copy of Paris 'Sleepless Nights' in his airing cupboard, and of course it was an original ! Of course he never sold a record, so was able to do this time and time again. When he was first ill he told me that nearly all the male members of his family had died under fifty of heart attacks, I'd guess that was about five years ago, and having taken early retirement from BT at fifty, Derek in a way knew he was living on borrowed time. That didn't stop him being Derek though ! As another example of his generosity of spirit earlier this year he realised he'd been double booked at Rugby and the Half Time Orange. Rather than let anyone down, he did an early spot at Rugby, drove back to Leicester, did a spot at the Half Time Orange, and then drove back to Rugby to do his second spot of the night, then he drove back home to Leicester. His sheer exuberance when DJing, and of course dancing behind the decks, set an example that all of us should follow. It was never about money, status, politics with Derek, he just entertained. He'll be missed by so many people, and it seems so cruel that it's always the ones you care about that are taken, but I don't think he will ever be forgotten by anyone who knew him, and I know he died having just finished his spot, so perhaps as he had to go, this was the best way possible. My condolences to his family, who I never met, but I do understand what a great loss they must feel at this time, because I'm sure the qualities he had on the Northern Scene would have also been present in his home life. If there is a God, and a Heaven, there will already be a set of technics set up with a dancefloor behind them, just waiting for Mr Derek 'Dancing' Allen.

  13. I'm absolutely staggered by the statement above. I deliberately played a set of more well known tunes to try and get the dancefloor moving a bit. I accept there are a few rarities in there, but hasn't that always been what's behind the name 'Rare Soul' ! Perhaps Soulie64 would care to enlighten me as to which of these tunes he doesn't know ? Do you go out a lot ? This is what I played between midnight and 1 am. Joe Tex - I Wanna Be Free - Dial King Curtis - Soul Pattin' Part 2 - Atco Mack Rice - Baby I'm Coming Home - Lupine Big Daddy Rogers - I'm A Big Man - Midas Syng McGowan - That's What I Want - Hope Mickie Champion - What Good Am I - Musette Joanne Courcy - I Got The Power - Twirl Volcanoes - The Laws Of Love - Arctic Van Dykes - Save My Love For A Rainy Day - Mala Jimmy Washburn - Into Your Heart - Edgewood Acetate Enchantments - I'm In Love With Your Daughter - Faro Vondells - Hey Girl - Airtown Caressors - I Can't Stay Away Ru-Jac Brooks Brothers - Looking For A Woman - Tay Dee Dee Sharp - Deep Dark Secret - Cameo Patience Valentine - If You Don't Come - SAR Delcos - Arabia - Ebony Five Royals - Catch That Teardrop - Home Of The Blues Diplomats - Cards On The Table - Arock T J Williams - Baby I Need You - Josie Sam Fletcher - I'd Think It Over Mill Evans - Why Why Why - King Jimmy Wallace - I'll Be Back - Alpha Fantastic 4 - Can't Stop Looking For My Baby - Tic-Tic Johnnie Mae Matthews - I Have No Choice - Big Hit In fact there were only two tunes that people came and asked about: Jimmy washburn, and T J Williams.

  16. That's because the DJs you book don't play R & B. Most of the tracks named in this thread have featured in my playlists at one time or another, and of the one's Joe listed first time, only the Dr Truelove hasn't been in my DJ box at all. I do agree though, some of the shite that is played as R & B is just that ..shite. I always try and play tunes that are on the border of Soul music / R & B, as an example, anything by Bobby Bland falls into that category for me. As for it being dead ? Not in the slightest, I normally try and play about 20 minutes in an hours spot, and aften the dancefloor is at it's busiest during that 20 minutes. As I've said before, I don't claim to be a great DJ, but I must be doing something right because I've averaged over 50 bookings a year for some time now, and already have 38 in the diary for 2005.
  17. I'll go for it Shute OH YES YOU DO !
  18. Better still, offer them money to have it back
  19. Ha ha, that'll teach me. Should be in all day mate
  20. I assume you do have the legal rights to use that photograph Dan ? :-) Sorry, I'll get my coat.
  21. Parliaments has gone.
  22. Three out of my DJ box for sale, cash needed for other buys. The Parliaments - Heart Trouble - Golden World White Demo - £250 Condition E+. A few scuffs on the vinyl that don't affect the sound quality at all, and two crosses on the label in marker pen. You just don't see this on White demo though, a real collectors item. The Rockmasters - Raining Teardrops - Romulus - £300 Condition M-. Looks and sounds unplayed. A real heavyweight midtempo record that is still really hard to turn up. Johnny Summers - I Can't Let Go - Yorktown - £350 Condition M-. Looks and sounds unplayed. A few turned up a couple of years ago and the price came down from £800. Watch it go back up again now they have all disappeared into collections. Contact me off the forum on dave@soulfulkindamusic.net but be quick because they are going in the sales box tonight. Cheers
  23. It came out as one of the Winsford allnighter anniversary singles about five yers ago.
  24. Think there's a Dutch release with a picture cover as well.
  25. It's been picking up quite a lot of plays in the North West over the last year or so, 'Covered up' as Ramsey Lewis Two.
