  1. It's from the Dana Owens Album CD released last year. Mostly jazz stuff (no rap) and it's pretty good.
  2. I see the only people getting the hump over this again are those that own the originals and don't want to be outdone. The majority of the audience wouldn't care. As a lot of them are now deleted, they will be quite hard to find in years to come. They are legit so put 'em on.
  3. A few years ago, there was some great stuff coming out.I would say the ratio of quality soulful stuff has always been quite low but it's deteriorated badly over the last two years. I don't really buy any at all any more but do think stuff like Blaze, Arnold Jarvis, Stephanie Cooke and Michelle Weeks fit the bill alright.
  4. I think the 80s was more of an LPs period, especially in view of the slower tempo the higher quality soul tracks had. Other goodies that spring to mind are: Broomfield Vanesse Thomas Stephanie Mills "If I Were Your Woman" By All Means Anita Baker Chapter 8 (both) Perri "The Flight" Miles Jaye "Irresistible"
  5. Chapter 8 "Stronger Love" Mini Curry "100%" Body "Middle Of The Night" Perri "I'm The One" Ernesta Dunbar "Checking Out" Bobby McClure "It Feels So Good (To Be Back Home" Mellissa Morgan "Heart Breaking Decision" Bloodstone "Just Wanna Get The Feel Of It" Amy Keys "Someone's Gonna Fall In Love" Mary Love Comer "Come Out Of The Sandbox" As Pete B says, a very underrated period.
  6. I know some people have do it successfully via mini disc without a problem.
  7. "Do The Right Thing" has got some cracking tracks. The winner has got to be Superfly though.
  8. In general, the modern punters care even less what format the tune is on. Rarity does not play as much of a part - particularly with new releases that are easily available. It's all about the music......
  9. The first CD is all covers. I think "Super Duper Lovin" is pretty good. The 2nd CD is mostly original stuff.
  10. Try wwww.solarradio.com. Not all shows may appeal to you but I'm sure some will.
  11. Otis Redding / Anita Baker
  12. The record is a bootleg though. The original release is on the CD, as sold in Tescos and other quality soul outlets. If you've got the CD already, I don't see the need to buy the record too in this case.
  13. Was this Otis Smith the same fella who worked at Beverly Glen records, had the bust up with Bobby Womack, discovered Chapter 8, Anita Baker, etc.?
  14. "Tainted Love" got a play too.
  15. Good article. Thanks for putting that up. "Illogical rejection" is a phrase I like.
  16. Agreed, particularly about Lisa Stansfield, but I wouldn't confuse those types of records with modern soul. They normally wouldn't get played in modern rooms at all. I find it strange that some northern dj's have latched onto them.
  17. Richard Temple would have to be the obvious one. Also I lve the intro to Lynn Collins "Think" & The Marvellettes "My Baby Must Be a Magician."
  18. It's never going to happen. The music is about 40 years old. It's a very acquired taste. A small minority of people like a bit from what hear on the radio/tv but don't take it further. A smaller number buy CDs and go to the occasional do. A much smaller number collect records and go out regularly. I think that's about a far as it's going to go. Probably for the better.
  19. Rose Batiste "Hit and Run" sums it up for me. Perfect Detroit, Motown soundalike, stomper.
  20. "Just Call My Name" however, from the Nobody But You Lp is a real choon and a half!
  21. I've just listened to "Watcha Gonna Do About Love" for the first time in ages. I never really struck me playing the LP before. Good track but not one of his best imo.
  22. I even love his early stuff pre Brunswick. OK it's not northern soul (maybe not soul) but they're still great records. Perhaps Reet Petite should be added to the list for a laugh.
  23. I'm not a great lover of instrumentals when there is already a well known vocal take. However, I do like good instrumentals and I think they can still be soulful. Things like "Tune Up" for example.
