  1. As others have already said, the internet is helping the scene. It's good place to find out what's going on, what the respected and bad venues are, arrange to meet up, obtain other people's views on the do that you attended, etc. One of the reasons for a downtown in attendances is that the music is so bloody old now. As each decade goes by, it sounds more and more dated and there aren't enough newies to sustain the interest. What used to be some kinda cool, hip underground scene with some fantastic, different dancing and wonderful records that you hadn't heard before and are difficult to obtain has now turned into over 40s nights with the same old music, fat geezers slowly shuffling and you can check out a song you're after on the web the day after. In fact, it's incredible that the scene has lasted as long has it has.

  3. For an excellent mix of Teddy's songs and dialogue from the great man, click on this mix was was done about two years ago: https://www.sixmillionsteps.com/drupal/node/692
  4. How very sad. He's been very fragile for a long time now and you could hear that in "My People" which came out in 2007. He's definitely one of the all time greats and in my top 10 male vocalists of all time. All his Philly stuff was superb and he also had some fantastic moments later, notably the Joy LP in 1988. From dancers like "You Can't Hide From Yourself" to wonderful tearjerking ballads like "The Whole Town's Laughing At Me", he really was a legend. RIP Teddy.
  5. Cheers. Thanks for the personal insults What a crack
  6. That's a bit rich coming from you, isn't it? Actually I'm pleased that some post 60s music is getting some good exposre in a thread like this. It's just a laugh really, but I don't think a list of modern anthems that has 95% of its content recoreded in the 70s is representative. Pete B and Sean H seem to be the only ones reaching beyond the northern/modern or normodern as Dodger called it.
  7. As much as I admire the concept, I don't think your list is going to be representative Simon. Half of the tracks posted are now deemed to be acceptable in northern rooms. This generally means that once that's happened they stop being modern, as NS is a retro scene. I know it hasn't always been the case - Cleethorpes, Mecca being prime examples but those place don't exist any more as far as NS gigs are concerned.
  8. Sorry, it was only a joke. Don't be put off . You're on the right track anyway if you like The Rimshots.
  9. Yes - over 30 years ago
  10. Cool. I bet that was good. Same Girl is CD of the decade imo.
  11. Simon, are you after creating a list of modern tracks that are more than 30 years old?
  12. No, I didn't know there was a forthcoming release. The last CD was from last year - Lay It Down - which was pretty good.
  13. I've never heard of a Maysa song called Conspiracies (and I thought I had all of them) . Do you mean Compliments?
  14. Sounds great. Wish I was there - I've never seen Al Green live. I've seen some awesome concerts though, such as Michael Jackson - Wembley Stadium 1988 (seriously!) Luther Vandross - Wembley Arena 1987 Prince Phillip Mitchell - Fleetwood 2002 Maze - Hammy O 1989 Anita Baker / Perri - Wembley Stadium 1988 Jean Carne - Dominion 1988 Stevie Wonder - Royal Albert Hall 1995 Gerald Albright / Peices of A Dream / Bill Withers - Hammy O 1988 Prince - Wembley Arena 1988 I'm very much looking forward to seeing Teena Marie in Jan.
  15. Maysa's version of the The Bottle is on a CD called "All My Life" on Expansion. Excellent CD. Mirrors and Hooked on Your Love are also supern tracks on it. As for modern anthems, I guess it would be stuff like: Sean Oliver - You & Me Maxwell - Ascension Ann Nesby - In The Spirit George Benson - When Love Comes Calling Cheryl Lynn - Sweet Lind of Life Jaheim - Just In Case Ron Carroll - Back Together E-Smoove - Deja Vu Al Green - Keep On Pushing Love Dazz Band - You Are My Starship Ivan Matias - Somebody Knows How You Feel Angie Stone - Wish I Didn't Miss You Jill Scott - Golden Kindred The Family Soul - As Of Yet Next - Wifey Michael Cooper - Stepping To A Love Song Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (steppers remix) Tashan - After Hours Maysa - Friendly Pressure Earth, Wind & Fire - Can't Hide Love (MAW remix) Luther Vandross - Are You Using Me April Hill - The Search Mary J. Blige - Be Happy C-Nario - Body Fusion Hil St. Soul - Alright D'Influence - Magic / Taste of Bitter Love Impromp2 - Give It Up The O'Jays - Imagination James Day - Don't Waste The Pretty Donald McCollum - U Don't Want My Love Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight R. Kelly - Step In The Name of Love These have all been hammered by DJ's (some way too much lol) and filled dancefloors over the last 15 or so years.
  16. I still love these records, after all these years: Freeez - Southern Freeez Herbie Hancock - I Thought It Was You Tony Etoria - I Can Prove It
  17. The Leon Ware & Friends CD on Expansion is excellent. It also has a killer Chuck Jackson track on it "No Tricks"
  18. Just played this myself. It passed me by before despite having the CD for years. It's terrific, isn't it?
  19. Agreed. Very good book.
  20. It's a great LP. I used to hammer it at the time.
  21. Why? It's bloody crap Seriously, there are literally hundreds of better soul records recorded over the last 10 years which make this sound like a british pop song (which it is )
  22. Why did Music Merchant re-release it in 1972?
  23. I've loved this record for ages. I may give it a go at the Kent Soul Club on 19 Dec. I've always thought it'd go well with Jean Carne's "Free Love" - similar kinda intro.
  24. LP only - I'm pretty sure of it. Great song.
  25. The Sharon Ridley is excellent. I didn't realise it had been popular this year.
