  1. Good choice. There's plently more out there. I won't write a long list to confuse you but The Revelations ft. Tre Williams CD that came out towards the end of last year springs to mind as being quite similar https://www.amazon.com/Bleeding-Edge-Revelations/dp/B002LFIZQI/ref=pd_sim_m_1 https://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;1;-1;-1;-1&sku=294179

Mongo Santamaria's version is a good 'un
  3. I'd vote for Celest Hardy too. i always think of it as the most typical of crossover tunes.
  4. So many wonderful songs, it's difficult to know where to start. For the sake of adding something different I'll go for You Sure Love To Ball.
  5. Which CD is that from Nancy? Is it a cover of the Marvin Gaye song? (not that he did it first - it's a very old song I believe) Frank McComb did a good version too
  6. Do what you want mate. It doesn't matter and you don't need anyones approval.
  7. Yvonne Vernee was also featured on this radio show too.
  8. He's a legend. A soul hero, no doubt. He's northern material doesn't even touch the sides of the stuff he's since done with Maze. Ctch them live at the Indigo O2 11 & 12 April!

I like Teddy Vann. Is that considered to be shite too - one of those records the scene would rather forget.
  10. Bretby 1996. Although I had been into northern soul since 1983 - I had basically stopped being that interested after 1986. As I walked in I heard Marie Knight "That's No Way To Treat A Girl". It sounded awesome out loud and I thought to myself "I'm back!". Great night it was too - Chris King's 40th birthday bash with appearances from Tommy Hunt, Ivy Hunter and Edwin Starr.
  11. Thanks for this Mike. I'd say it's more country, pehaps bluegrass (if that's the right term - I'm no expert) than soul but it's alright.
  12. As others have already said, the internet is helping the scene. It's good place to find out what's going on, what the respected and bad venues are, arrange to meet up, obtain other people's views on the do that you attended, etc. One of the reasons for a downtown in attendances is that the music is so bloody old now. As each decade goes by, it sounds more and more dated and there aren't enough newies to sustain the interest. What used to be some kinda cool, hip underground scene with some fantastic, different dancing and wonderful records that you hadn't heard before and are difficult to obtain has now turned into over 40s nights with the same old music, fat geezers slowly shuffling and you can check out a song you're after on the web the day after. In fact, it's incredible that the scene has lasted as long has it has.

How very sad. He's been very fragile for a long time now and you could hear that in "My People" which came out in 2007. He's definitely one of the all time greats and in my top 10 male vocalists of all time. All his Philly stuff was superb and he also had some fantastic moments later, notably the Joy LP in 1988. From dancers like "You Can't Hide From Yourself" to wonderful tearjerking ballads like "The Whole Town's Laughing At Me", he really was a legend. RIP Teddy.

That's a bit rich coming from you, isn't it? Actually I'm pleased that some post 60s music is getting some good exposre in a thread like this. It's just a laugh really, but I don't think a list of modern anthems that has 95% of its content recoreded in the 70s is representative. Pete B and Sean H seem to be the only ones reaching beyond the northern/modern or normodern as Dodger called it.

As much as I admire the concept, I don't think your list is going to be representative Simon. Half of the tracks posted are now deemed to be acceptable in northern rooms. This generally means that once that's happened they stop being modern, as NS is a retro scene. I know it hasn't always been the case - Cleethorpes, Mecca being prime examples but those place don't exist any more as far as NS gigs are concerned.

Sorry, it was only a joke. Don't be put off . You're on the right track anyway if you like The Rimshots.

Yes - over 30 years ago
  21. Cool. I bet that was good. Same Girl is CD of the decade imo.
  22. Daved posted a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
Simon, are you after creating a list of modern tracks that are more than 30 years old?
  23. No, I didn't know there was a forthcoming release. The last CD was from last year - Lay It Down - which was pretty good.

I've never heard of a Maysa song called Conspiracies (and I thought I had all of them) . Do you mean Compliments?
  25. Sounds great. Wish I was there - I've never seen Al Green live. I've seen some awesome concerts though, such as Michael Jackson - Wembley Stadium 1988 (seriously!) Luther Vandross - Wembley Arena 1987 Prince Phillip Mitchell - Fleetwood 2002 Maze - Hammy O 1989 Anita Baker / Perri - Wembley Stadium 1988 Jean Carne - Dominion 1988 Stevie Wonder - Royal Albert Hall 1995 Gerald Albright / Peices of A Dream / Bill Withers - Hammy O 1988 Prince - Wembley Arena 1988 I'm very much looking forward to seeing Teena Marie in Jan.
