  1. Maybe it was a long time ago Simon.
  2. I feel very upset writing this. She was so talented! Beautiful ballads, great happy uptempo tunes, a belter of a singer and excellent live. Here's a clip of her singing Cassanova Brown, which was her encore, at the IndigO2 earlier this year. Amazing performance, amazing woman. RIP Teena.
  3. Not really. Good song though.
  4. The Love You Save (May Be Your Own) by Joe Tex is in Death Proof. Excellent film and excellent song (not really northern though)
  5. That's when I heard it first too. I bought a UK RCA 45 at the time and used to clap my hands like a madman but it hasn't come out of the old record box for a long time.
  6. I don't know why you're asking about the format. Do what you want mate. You don't need anyones approval. The only problem with playing it out is that it's rubbish
  7. Love those songs
  8. Good list. That's more like it. I'd also add the following five new releases: Preston Glass ft. Keni Burke - Orange You Ready (Cool Million Mix) Lawrence Beaman - We Making Love JD73 - Pure Gold Helen Bruner & Terry Jones - Better Rena Scott - Come Back Home
  9. He was Malcolm X's servant.
  10. You could try the usual retailers Soul Brother, Crazy Beat, Simply Soul Mail Order. What sort of 45s are you thinking of? Personally I haven't bothered much and prefer to get a full CD with the other tracks on it for the same price. Exceptions I suppose are things like Sonja Grier and Carlton Smith.
  11. I was there that night too. It was my first ever all nighter up north (well up north for me ). Wasn't Tommy Hunt there too? I got very pissed on Caffreys but had a cracking time. I ended up swapping my wife's 45 for a Goldmine CD as I hadn't see the full range before. I had given up listening to northern soul for 10 years before that but it got me going again.
  12. Sounds about right. It's not hard and was very popular at the time. Excellent record I never tire of hearing
  13. Randy's version is the worst of the lot imo. You can't be Stevie's version - it's his song after all. What with having Betty Wright, Eddie Levert & Michael Jackson on backing vocals, it's an absolute winner!
  14. When Berry Gordy set up Motown, the idea was not to make black music but music to appeal to everyone. However, by 1967/68 there was a lot of racial tension (Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, race riots, etc), and Motown decided not to ignore what was going on their own doorsteps and produce records such as Ball of Confusion which provided some social comment. Mick Howard's article above explains it all.
  15. Simon probably doesn't think the Casino is as worthy because it's not as cool and hip and people wore flares there
  16. The CD is definately the better value for money. It's a great CD with the excellent "False Faces" on it too.
  17. Agreed. Erykah Badu is a great CD (as are all of hers). Lots of excellent new music around - Jonathan Butler, Cool Million, Adriana Evans, Kem, etc, etc
  18. More power to this kind of stuff. I don't know a single one of Karl's set listed at the top of the page but I'd love to hear them.
  19. I know he did but I thought it'd be a crack :D It is a good CD actually - it contains some of best, soulful r&b stuff from the 90s
  20. this one's pretty good
  21. It also appeared on the Night Owl 3 CD, issued by Jay Boy about eight years ago.
  22. It's also on one of the Night Owl CDs on Jay Boy. Night Owl 3, I think.
  23. There's clips featured in 35mm on Sky Movies this week.
