  1. I agree Benji. I've never liked it much myself. I much prefer "We Can Make It Happen"
  2. It would be nice to think so, but unlikely imo. He hadn’t attained it at that point so I don’t think he would later, unless he put out some belter early 70s LPs, which could have been possible if he teamed up with the right crew.
  3. I missed Jools Holland last night. I thought his last CD was great so look forward to this one too
  4. It got quite a bad review in the Evening Standard last week. I get the impression that any link or reference to northern soul is flakey.
  5. Tent Music was a term created after the crossover sessions at the Cala Gran, Fleetwood weekenders in about 2001 is the massive marquee attached to the side of the building. What were the Ohio Players live like at the weekender in 1993?
  6. No, it was CD only.
  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5lxfKTQ0UM
  8. I suppose a few obvious examples are: Leroy Hutson — Because of You Bobby Womack — Woman’s Gotta Have It Beverly & Duane — I Wanna Be With You Stephanie Mills — Keep Away Girls
  9. Jr Walker & The All Stars "Tune Up" has to be one of my faves
  10. I love two step. It’s mainly late 70s to early 80s stuff. I won’t provide a list of records because someone will say that a certain track doesn’t qualify. The deeper into these sub-genres you go, the more anoraky and aggressive people become. You should see the debate on EMS about two step recently. I’m no expert on it but know what I like!
  11. Who was Alfie Davison? Did he do anything else?
  12. It's a funny song. Very catchy and instant. One I used to like a lot when I first heard it over 25 years ago. Now I think of it as a cheesy tune that may have got played on a 70s tv show. Something like "Love Is In The Air"
  13. I didn't realise 5 stars should be the default unless there's been a problem. I generally only give 5's for total outstanding perfection. Otherwise, 3 or 4s. Perhaps that's my misunderstanding of the system.
  14. Stuff like "Reet Petite" and "Don't You Just Know It" are late 50s recordings that have been played at northern dos. There must be quite a few others too. Oh, and Richard Berry too!
  15. Sorry Mike this a thread about modern soul not punch ups in Brum which could command a 25 page topic in its own right in the freebasing section.
  16. Subsequently followed by the three room divide - northern, 70s/crossover, modern - now that I didn't like and things got quite diviisive with factions all going their own way. I was quite happy with the two room divide. Best of both worlds.
  17. I don't think I've had my subscription fulfilled either. It's had its day.
  18. I don't know this one. Anyone got a sound file?
  19. Looks great. A lot of the well known tracks have been out on CD before but there's quite a few that haven't.
  20. In that case, albums by the following artists are usually a safe bet: Anthony Hamilton Jill Scott Erykah Badu Eric Benet Will Downing Maysa Angie Stone (last one (Rich Girl) was great!) Teena Marie (RIP - great posthomous CD - Beautiful) I could go on & on (like Eykah )
  21. Steve, Would you like a list of artists that are making music that sounds old/trtro e.g Sharon Jones or artists that are making current sounding music e.g. Angie Stone?
  22. I saw the London gig an agree it was fab. Nice to hear him perform songs recorded by others too like Summer Somethin', After The Dance and I Want You. Did you get some of Incognito as the backing band?
  23. It wasn’t that bad. Quite reasonable entertainment. If they put real train spotters on there, then most of the general public would’ve been bored. At least a Donny Hathaway LP made it onto the Wall of Sound.

    Rip Donald Byrd

RIP Donald. Dominoes still sounds as great today as it did when I first heard it.
