You're definitively right Pete, Four winds "Down & out" is absolutely unplayable (Four Freshmen style is a good definition). It's just a curiosity...the kind of record which we find accidentally and cheap but which we keep in its collection (just because it's the same backing track)...valued 50 in Tim Brown's guide!!!

The Velvelettes - Self Titled 1966 Unfinished Album
Rom1 replied to The Tempest's topic in Look At Your Box
A French collector friend told me the release of an album was planned in France in the mid-60's but was cancelled. He apparently got the information from Gilles Petard (French Tamla Motown promoter in the 70's) Perhaps tapes or test pressing exists, I'll ask to Gilles more informations about it next time I see him. I have another version of "Down & out" by The Four Winds on Chattahoochee (exactly same backing track but with white doo-wop group style vocals) not as good as George Freeman's one. Value of this one? Romain

Not really interesting (just good covers) apart the nice picture sleeve. They played this classic tracks during their French tour in 1967 or 68 (mainly in the south of France...Riviera Clubs & Discotheques in Nice, St-Tropez...) Romain

Hello Philippe, this LP is the French 70's reissue, the first French 60's pressing came out on red "Disc Jockey - Maxi" label (with an horrible picture sleeve) and a second one came out on the same label too (with another hideous sleeve). All Barretto's, Ralphie Pagan, Monguito Santamaria... French 45's pressings also came out on red or yellow "Disc Jockey" label with sleeves.

I totally agree with you, I'm sure few Brits (and others) would be happy to come in Paris for a weekend break & soul allnighter (like few did in the past, incl. great Uk DJ's). I know Raphi but he's based in the south of France and his action is mainly local, and I don't think he could do anything in Paris (and by memory I never saw him in any Paris events in the past...),...but he's always welcome. Again we'll let you know when something serious will be organised in our (so) beautiful & great PARIS town.

I'm from Paris...and sadly there's nothing serious since 2008 (apart of Loren & Tanguy's event in Brittany) Many problems : no scene (we are handful of people...all collectors & Dj's, and the mod scene is dead), no venue (too small or too big...and in all cases very hard to deal with), and no motivations. I'll try to motivate my friend Stephane "Doc" Yver (organizer of "Paris Blues Allnighters") and others Parisians like Lionel, Bruno...to do something. By the way we'll let you know on Soul Source when a new allnighter will take place. Thanks Romain

Hi, I met one time French Richard Anthony's son, and he confirmed his father recorded few tracks in Motown Studios in 1965. Apparently, only one record came out on VIP label ("I don't know what to do / what now my love"). This record came out in France as a single on the COLUMBIA label with different B side ("You've lost that lovin' feelin"), and I never saw picture sleeve (juke box copies probably). There's no French Tamla Motown record with Richard Anthony (luckily!) Cheers Romain

By memory only "Keep your faith baby" came out on Vault 45 (out of his Scoop "don't you make me cry" 45)

I bought 2 years ago the last copies (with 2 friends of mine) in Louisiana at drummer's place (near Raceland)...it was said less than 500 copies were pressed The price is now down because lots of copies were sold on Ebay at the same time...but in fact, this is a rare record See Tim Brown's guide (latest edition)...still high priced...without reasons? Time will tell Romain

Few samples of French issues...if all French 4 tracks EP are known (a book came out in the 80's named "Fabulous EP covers" by Daniel Delorme)...100's of 45's (not EP format) were issued in France with sleeves...and 30 to 40% are unknown!
-
definitively...in my opinion, Lou Courtney is completively out on this song..., he sings out of tune...which is not the case on other tracks he did for Popside, Riverside, Buddah... Regards Romain

All versions are good... I found few copies of Forte label's records at the same time from a same guy on my last trip in USA (incl. these 3 ones + one Fantasticks & one Fabulous Rhythm Makers)...and it was said all records from this label were discovered recently. I don't know the others versions...if someone can post the soundclips & scans. Romain

Hi Burt, no probs,...4 Tops is a spanish pressing (a lot of Tamla Motown stuff came out in Spain with nice sleeves), Supremes one seems to be a belgium, dutch or german pressing. Me & one my old best friend (Stephane "Doc" Yver) are working on a book including colour scans with all French 60's stuff came out on 45 format...as it doesn't exists. At first you can see few samples (this is not complete, we've hundreds of scans & references to add on) on my friend's website (on Labels Fran§ais icon) : https://alamod.net/pa...dules/sections/ The site is quiet as this time, because the webmaster is on holidays, so if you wanna register, you should wait the end of august to do it... Cheers Romain

Hi, Burt, sorry I didn't wanna hurt you when I said "stamp" collector...I was not speaking about you (as if I can find this kind of stuff I'll probably buy it as I'm collecting particularly 60's french Soul pressings in any format but mainly US 45's) I was only speaking 'bout non-soul collectors or dealers (you can find them mainly in record fairs/conventions) selling high prices 45's or Lp's only for pictures sleeves (& don't care about music...selling or collecting Madonna/George Michael/Beatles...and finally Ray Pollard or Betty O'Brien EP's on the same wall just because it's rare)...and they don't understand why we are listening to it !!!...they could collect or sell potatoes/toys...that's the same...that's why I called them "stamp" colls Cheers & sorry again Romain

Hi, Burt, nice French collector item you got (specially if it's in mint condition), 5 to 10 Rhythm & Blues mini LP's serie came out in France in the 60's (maybe more?) including Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, Booker T & Mg's, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Percy Slegde, Jimmy Hendrix Experience (the rarer & highly collected because of Jimmy Hendrix), Eric Burdon & The Animals (not sure)...and few Stax-Atlantic compilations. These mini-LP's are part of different 60's R&B-Soul collections & compilations issued in France named "Rhythm&Blues Formidable", "Surboum", "Terrible", "Remarquable"...(with 1 to 13 volumes for each collection, some with interesting labels & tracks as Chess, Jubilee, Revue...) Mini LP's are often found in bad conditions as it's small & very fragile (that's why they probably stopped production) Personnally, I never really collected these records because it's unplayable and artists/tracks are too common (good but ultra classic)...I let these to "stamps" collectors... Hope I helped you ROMAIN

Hi Mark, it's true it comes from Holland, I had it 10 years ago from a dutch guy and I sold it £50 at this time... Few records came out on this label, I still have "Jackie Payne - No puppy love" I'll send a picture if you want (& I think I had "Go go train" on the same label, but I sold it too)...it's a strange label but I think it came out at the end of 60's - early 70's...or it's a reissue label for the Belgium popcorn scene?...I don't know! I never saw picture sleeves from this label Regards Romain

"Can't seem to get you out of my mind" ( Yesterday's dream LP & dutch 45 only) & "Where did you go"...for me
