as in UK, Germany (...) because of the birth of these "new" musics, new clubs, new dances (madison, twist, jerk...), new fashions...with big commercial potential for the record market. In fact Soul music emerged really in France in the mid to end 60's with Tamla Motown and Stax-Atlantic as they played several times in Paris (Motown revue, Stax Revue...at "L'Olympia" concert hall). Most of the time, these obscure "Soul" EP's, LP's or singles releases were commercial flops...that's why some of these records are very rare. To my knowledge, there's no French equivalent to Dave Godin, except probably Gilles Petard (known black records & photos collector and Tamla Motown promoter in France in the 70's) and few musical journalists who had records chronicles in Blues magazines.

Hi, I'm living in France too and collects (for 15 to 20 years) these French black 50's & 60's 4 tracks EP's but 60's & early 70's singles with picture sleeves. As Pikeys dog said, Daniel Delorme's book is essential if you're collecting French EP's because there's only black doo-wop, R&B, soul artists inside (no pop, rock...) Great stuff exists on these french EP's...Tamla Motown artists EP's are large (Brenda Holloway, Earl van dyke, Detroit Spinners, Temptations, Marvin Gaye...) but more obscure artists too like Helen Troy (I think I love you) Betty O'Brien (She'll be gone) Paul Sindab (Do you wanna do/Dropped your candy), Timiko (Don't cry..), Patti Austin (Coral stuff), Ray Pollard (drifter/sad thing), Frank Polk (Trying to keep up), Buddy Lamp (My tears) Maxine Brown (3 ep's) Chuck Jackson (5 ep's)... For the French singles (45's) it's another (never ending) story...no real books exists on black music, and me & few other French collectors are always discovering new stuff.

Yes Paul, BIEM is the publishing company for France & Belgium (belgium for the wooden nickels 45) in the 60's and SACEM later (from 68 to now). but you can find BIEM publishing in other european countries GEMA for Germany & Holland (and SABAM also) Cheers Romain

Hi, This track came out on a Blue Rock 45 in USA, but it's a different take (with organ & girls). Is this French 45 version came out in USA or in another country? Charay sessions? I've posted the track in Refosoul This track is not on the French Pic & Bill LP Thank you for your help Romain
-
I agree with you, it's ok It's not "northern" but if you like 60's beat/mod style (Richard Kent Style, Fleur de lys...) or white soul bands or Garage soul (The Mob, Burning bush, Chapter 5...) is it the worse?
-
She's very known in France, she was very popular in the 60's with pop hits (Y-y style), variety and commercial music,...she did a come back in the 70's with disco music (with success). A popular joke told she was a male (but it's definitively not true)

Hi Dave (and Benji), You're right...if books with all French 4 tracks EP's exists...there's nothing about the one-track-per -side 7" 45's, it's a very hard and long work to do...as nobody knows what really came out in France in this format. The EP's production was stopped around 1966, so from 66 to 70's (and after) all the 7" records were only with one track-per-side mostly with picture sleeves (except juke box 45's) Some case 45s also came out during the EP period (before 66) but more rarely (few tamla stuff, UA , Abc...) mainly for juke box or promotion Me & my friend Stephane (doc) Yver from France are trying to find, locate and list all of these soul-NS 45's for more than 15 years, but we're always discovering new records as there's plenty of major labels (Vogue, Atco, Roulette, Barclay, Mgm, UA, Atlantic, Stax, Tamla Motown...) and small labels (AZ, Disc Jockey, Soul Rec...)., with thousand of references (feat. lots of pop, country, rock...) Few labels are complete but majority are incomplete. The best thing we could do is to contact French authority responsible for rights and copyrights on the music (BIEM until 1967-68 become SACEM after) and try to have a copy or access of complete listing of records taken out to this time...but what a mission to contact an administration, it is as to ask produce one you with Sarkozy!...complicated Merci et  bient´t Romain
