There is a northern night in Reading called 'Baregroove', first sat of the month at 'The Facebar'. Not a huge event and the dancefloor is not so good but nice friendly crowd. Not all dj's play ovo (I do if guesting...) but worth a look if you are in the area.

Thanks Phild. I spoke to them and they said yes can include record collection in house contents and would be covered outside the home e.g. taking to a mates house but not for dj'ing. Also advised that in the event of a claim should have afull inventory listing, ideally with receipts for all of them &/or take picture of them all to prove ownership, confirmation of values. So much more helpful than our current insurer but still seems to be a problem for dj'ing even though I explained it wasn't a business, just occasional events.

Many thanks for pointing me to these - interesting stuff !!!

JM's book 'million dollars of soul' has a rareity grading system e.g. 1 star = less than 10 known copies , 2 stars = less than 25 known copies etc... perhaps dealers/sellers should adopt a uniform system when describing records similar to the grading system. On the other hand maybe it is impossible to know apart from certain very well known and extremely rare records. Anayway speculating about records, their rareity etc.. is probably part of the fun and certainly more interesting than the work i am supposed to be getting on with right now!

i had a look at their website but if you dj (even occasionally) and therefore take some of the collection out to an event then they wont insure you, which is what i am looking for - can anyone help ?

please pm if you have one for sale with price and condition. many thanks.

Much of the stock of Shrine 45s were lost in a fire at the distributors during the riots. I had sort of assumed (wrongly) that Shrine wouldn't have rec'd any money for the stock that was destroyed in which case 1964 to 1968 was a long time to fund a loss making business. I would be keen to understand a bit more about how the whole business model worked with the labels/artists/distributors etc...

Record labels named after the owner/owners

I have wondered how rare 'Shrine' records really are? surely they must have sold a fair few as they went on to produce I think 19 records, if not they would have gone bust earlier...

Yes it is nice to have the original paper sleeves ("birthsleeves") so I put my records into plain brown paper sleeves that then fit into a cardboard one, this is then placed into a polythene sleeve. If I have the original paper sleeve then this goes between the cardboard sleeve and the polythene sleeve. That way it is visible but not subject to any more wear when taking the record out/putting it back. Also some orig paper sleeves wont fit nicely into the cardboard ones so this usually solves that issue. I am sure loads of people do this but I haven't seen any one else.

Yes definately, it makes sense for the 'set' to flow for me just as much as when out. I am mindful that I dont want to risk wear on the rarer/bigger ticket records so I only play them when I am home alone and can play them loud and totally immerse myself in them. Also i have records that i ration myself because i just dont want to hear them too often - that way they remain a special special treat. also i get the chance to play records that probably wouldn't work where i get asked to dj...

When eating out in the US the waiter/waitress would often say "your meal will be with you 'momentarily' sir"., being awkward I used to reply "why, are you going to take it away shortly after bringing it..." just got some strange looks.
