  1. Astral Trip - Mystic Moods. Never heard it played after the Casino, does it ever get played anywhere?
  2. "Well, you could say that no one can complain about or criticise anything, because it's not as bad as the first world war. Illogical argument." Well I concede that by adding the comparison with the First World War I was trying to highlight that in the scheme of things the shopping centre video doesn't really figure too much (for me) as something to worry about because life can throw shittier things at you than that. I think I should have owned my comment instead of making a generalised statement. So I can see why you have written what you did. I don't advocate or argue that should be anyones approach to life. Although I do think there is some logic to thinking like that as many people do try to contextualise/absorb/deal with things that happen to them in their lives by comparing and contrasting with other people/events/situations etc. Its the "it could be worse......." type of thinking. It can be useful, but has its limitations. I agree that the antidote to bad things in life isn't triviality, but don't we need some triviality sometimes? Just as light relief from the BS of life, I know I do (and i'm not saying that the shopping centre video is my idea of fun or light relief). I think it is crap when things are seen publicly that caricature the soul scene (or whatever name people want to give it) its just some rile me more (or less) than others - The One Show being an example of one that riled me more!
  3. And then he goes and gets hold of a Little Ann acetate.........enough said!
  4. Pleasant enough but definately influenced by "Patches" in my opinion.
  5. Yes it did.
  6. Does anybody on here remember being young, fecking about and learning about new things? Did you all walk through the doors of VaVa's, Mecca and Wigan with full on soul knowledge and being a full on serious soul head (maybe former Wheel and Torch heads etc are exempted here?) or was part of going out about having a laff as as well as about the music. Don't get me wrong I struggle with the "line dancing" and all the baggy nostalgia scene, but young kids having a laff dancing in a shopping centre is not the end of the world in a year we remember 100 years since the start of the 1st world war. Perspective people!
  7. As stated in the thread quoted above by 71Steve, it also came out in France on the SR label, including Baby Come Back.
  8. I'm more concerned Wigan allows scooterists to drive around with no hemets on!
  9. So how much for an original these days if the boot is into three figures?
  10. Post modified.
  11. Didn't he record quite a few records on preview though? This was one I tried to go after in the earlier days of ebay and never had any joy but seem to remember quite a few other tracks by him on the same label. I have a 45 on Preview by him in a box somewhere, slightly bizarre record, little bit like "Like the Lord Said"............idiosyncratic is the word that springs to mind.
  12. This might mean going slightly off topic and it may be more to do with my vivid imagination but I'd like to hear more about how you ended up in seeing Keb Darge dancing in a Russian basement to weird music. Was he wearing clothes? Were Russian gangsters involved? Maybe I've read too many dodgy espionage thrillers?
  13. I think many would agree that Clifton Hall should be featured. Started not long before Wigan finished, pulled in good crowds, played lots of "newies" which meant both new 60s discoveries and lots of 70s, early 80s sounds, stuff being played from the final year of Wigan like Otis Clay on Echo. Theres plenty on here who would have gone there. Sean Hampsey is one to talk to.
  14. Ah Grasshopper you have learnt the first lesson: know your roots. Take the lindyhop, jitterbug, jive (and all the dances that preceeded them). Then take some of the twist, watusi, swim, monkey time, hitchike, hulabuloo, block, the 81 etc. Mix in a little Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O' Connor, Nicholas Brothers etc. Then watch James Brown, Jackie Wilson and the Motown acts etc. Then copy the older kids at the club and put your twist on the moves and voila: your take on it all. Throw in a little martial arts? Maybe if so inclined, but the roots were already there grasshopper. Now go forth and spread the faith.
  15. / That was a great read thanks for finding and posting that Andy.
  16. At Wigan I heard this but didn't know who sang it. So I'm in the record bar and find a record with the title Time Marches On. So being young, naive, and off my face I say to the dealer is this the songs that goes.........and proceed sing my (completely out of tune) version of Laine Hill Time Marches On. The dealer tells me that it is the said record, I excitedley purchase it only to get home the next day and play it, finding it to be a semi instrumental and nothing like the Laine Hill record. It was actually The Peels Time Marches On. Dissapointed to say the least! I eventually sold that copy on to Domar. I did eventually get my Laine Hill. Have to say I always put her down as blue eyed so surprprised at post 9. Is that right?
  17. I had this on tape from the 80s. Pleasent enough tune but nothing special to me. Puts me in mind of that happy sort of beat like Dave Love Colalined Baby (which I think is better and a lot lot lot cheaper).
  18. Thanks for this. Its all there isn't it, Gene's high waistband, the audience clapping on the beat and the go go dancers high kicks - proto 70's soul scene :-)
  19. Interesting Pete, hopefully Ady can shed some light on that?
  20. Thanks I know about the Kent release but didn't know about the boot. I maybe should have mentioned I was talking about an original unrealesed acetate (if one exists?) as opposed to a carver. I'm assuming Kent got it from tape but wonder if it ever got to an acetate or just stayed in the can?
  21. Love Lou Johnson, to use a cliche he could sing the phone book. Yes for me Roy edges it on this but would be very happy with an acetate of Lou's version, very happy
  22. Didn't Stetsasonic sample that? Talkin all that jazz.
  23. So you believe its true and know who it is and think you know who told you but are a bit unsure if you remember correctly, but even though you can't quite be certain who told you, you're not going to tell us who it is. Also said person might no longer be doing it or might have only done it once! Well thats cleared that up
  24. This was hammmered to death back in the day and I've only ever owned the reissue of it and probably played it a handful of times in the 30+ years since I bought it at the Casino because I used to be sick of hearing it out (I'm going back a few years now, and don't go out much these days). A few months ago I had this on in the car on a cheap CD compilation and thought f*#king hell that sounds good. The combination of time passing and not hearing it for years really put it back into perspective. Good song, great lyrics/story..........good vocals, though shame its not Chuck Jackson singing it.
