  7. Is the Jackie Lee the original ? I thought I had the duck on a Bon n earl album? Found this article clears things up a bit fir me Bob & Earl were an American soul music singing duo in the 1960s, best known for writing and recording the original version of "Harlem Shuffle". Hide Career The original duo were Bobby Byrd and Earl Nelson (born Earl Lee Nelson, 8 September 1928, Lake Charles, Louisiana - 12 July 2008, Los Angeles) They had both been members of The Hollywood Flames, a prolific doo-wop group in Los Angeles, California whose major hit was "Buzz Buzz Buzz" in 1958, on which Nelson sang lead. By 1957, Byrd had started a parallel solo career, writing and recording for contractual reasons as Bobby Day. He wrote and recorded the original version of "Little Bitty Pretty One", and had a hit of his own with "Rockin' Robin" (1958). In 1960, Day/Byrd and Nelson began recording together as Bob & Earl, on the Class record label. However, these releases had relatively little success, and Day/Byrd restarted his solo career. In 1962, Nelson then recruited a second "Bob", Bobby Relf (January 10, 1937 - November 20, 2007), who also used the stage names of Bobby Garrett and Bobby Valentino. Relf had already led several Los Angeles based acts in his career, including the Laurels, the Upfronts, and Valentino and the Lovers. The latter two groups also featured the then pianist and bass singer, Barry White. This duo of Relf and Nelson recorded several singles for different labels, before "Harlem Shuffle" in 1963. The song was written by Relf and Nelson, arranged by Barry White,[1][2] and produced by Fred Smith. It was based on a number called "Slauson Shuffletime" (named after a boulevard in Los Angeles) by another Los Angeles singer, Round Robin.[3] When released on the Marc label, "Harlem Shuffle" became a modest hit on the R&B chart. Its vocal interplay directly influenced later duos such as Sam and Dave. However, its main success came as late as 1969, when it was re-released in the UK and became a Top Ten hit there. Reportedly,[4] George Harrison called it his favourite record of all time. By that time, Nelson had achieved further success as a solo artist under the alias of Jackie Lee, with "The Duck", a hit dance record released in 1965, which reached #14 in the U.S. (Jackie was Nelson's wife's name and Lee his own middle name). When "Harlem Shuffle" became successful on reissue, Nelson and Relf reunited as Bob & Earl to tour. The duo split up for the last time in the early 1970s.

  14. From 73-75 i wore the common crap that every other 14-15-16 year old could get hold of 1976 when I started going nighters with Gray Weaver ,Mona Rob Salway and the rest of the chesterfield Crew instated to " earn"' a bit of cash and could afford to have my trousers made to measure buy top class dancing shoes but I still and still do stick to wearing Fred perry shirts. I disagree that the " northern look of those days was the same as every one else. Not for us the platform shoes and tank tops flared trousers just look at that twat Paul o Grady when trying to dance on his show I still wear the fred perry stuff to dance in but I like to wear sta pres style trousers not baggies but it's great to see others dressing how we used to back in the day !! Keep on keeping on
  15. I'm not sure I understand the above comments? Is this a london v the north thing? I was just a kid in the sixties teenager in the seventies so I was a young skinhead then moved with the times started going allnighters ect Can't comment on the sixties too much but I would say that in my area chesterfield 75% of "lads" ie skins soulboys ect worked down the pits and I can assure you that we were not Grebos like the guy off of kes! The Manchester mod scene and London mod scene both played a very important roll in shaping the style ,music and the whole mod sub culture. quote: The Manchester Mods were probably unique, yes, they followed the London trends, often a little later, being provincial, but a growing core of them idolised soul music.alongside being fans of the UK Mod groups. Every Friday night Ready Steady Go would have soul artists, or play soul records, it was a TV show that few Mods would miss. RSG often had the Beatles and the Who and The Stones on the show. The trouble with the Rolling Stones as far as the 'Wheelers' the Manchester Soul Mods were concerned was that the Stones copied the original artists, and the originals were always the greatest (Dobbie Gray). Original recordings were to become the ONLY versions acceptable. This started the rare record scene off. Brazennose street Also the Beatles turned off Mods because they copied so much Tamla Motown stuff.......only later did a real appreciation of the Beatles and the Stones emerge when the chauvinism had dissipated somewhat! The Small Faces and The Who were appreciated as at least they were doing their own original material as we can see the guy is giving full respect to the London mods who started it all whilst trying to point out the difference betwwen the two cultures. i cant see any reference to 'northern pit lads' as you call yourself 'dave the blade' are you a sheffield utd supporter? or is there a darker meaning to that nick mame?
  16. I'd play em the flasher that'd keep the divvy bastards away
  17. Very good read the wheel is the my main venue these days. The only original part of the wheel we get to dance in is the stage room. The atmosphere created in that old cellar is amazing! I can only guess what the place must have felt like in the sixties! All those class live acts( too many to list ) must have been awesome!!! As I wasn't old enough to go when the place was running back in the day going there now is a bonus to me. Love listening to all the olde tales from the origanal wheelers and this is a great post Thanx Spike
  18. Either that or factory records company could make a bigger contribution to EH's coffers!!

  20. Just a bit off topic 2 years ago there was a guy at one of the twisted wheel sunday sessions asking for names for a petition to get a blue plaque on the whitworth Strret building, Think also they were looking at one for the brazenose site? I have not heard anything about it since. Anybody know owt?? Spike
