The Torch Dec 9th 1972
The Torch was the dog's bo**ocks, the dancing, the records, the gear, the 240 mile drive to get there, the clothes, even the bogs (more disgusting than Wigan's),the atmosphere, and the fact that the scene was fairly young at the time (nothing to be cynical about) all made it the best allniter as far as I'm concerned. Just a note about Major Lance at the Torch, sadly, on his first appearance (Oct 72) there, he was under-rehearsed, the band was crap and if I remember rightly he sang My Sweet Lord........... The attached pic shows Major Lance backstage at the Torch (Oct 72) - Judy Moss also in photo (hiya Judy) plus unknown chaps

Camberly, Surrey
I was that Tony Ellis and I deny ever giving a lift to a Haddock or any other type of fish for that matter and furthermore, I've always preferred the inside lane, although I may have ventured into one of the other lanes on a couple of occasions in order to overtake Jon Buck on his moped.

Watch Out For "itsinthegroovethatcounts"
Haven't posted for a while but thought I ought to warn people about an ebay dealer who says he/she collects northern amongst other things. This twat lives in Norfolk and leaves negative feedback for deals that to all intents and purposes have gone smoothly. I paid for 3 discs in Oct 07, received the discs ok, left positive feedback and forgot all about it, until the other day (22 Jan 08) when the moron left me negative feedback with no explanation why. I have emailed the person but have had no response and on looking at his feedback have noticed that I am not the only one to have had this done to them. Naturally Ebay are not interested. Does anyone know the person, if they do please kick him or her up the jacksie for me. This spanner also has an email address listed as Soulgroove@fsmail.net - ring any bells? Tony

The "heydays" Of Northern Soul
Top times for me was when I first "discovered" the Northern scene at Terry Davis's soul nights at the Fountain in the Mile End road in 72 (or was it 73, I dunno) . This led on to trips to the Torch and the Mecca during the most important period of the scene. It was all fairly new then and also mostly free from all the bollocks that goes on these days, (and the gear was better). Tone

James Hunter-great Soul Voice
I remember him when he was Howlin' Wilf. I've had the "People Gonna Talk" CD for ages, its a brilliant album covering many styles, played regularly at chez moi. Tone

Fashion And Soul

Fashion And Soul
Nothing wrong with the button down, perry, loafers, brogues look, its a classic style that almost always looks good, whereas the bags 'n vest 'n badge brigade just look plain daft these days. If you're anywhere near my age, what photos would you rather look at, those taken of you in the 70s, all hair and moustaches, or the ones taken in the 60s? - I know when I looked the smartest. tone Your Man @ C&A

Motown On The Mersey - Radio 2 Show - Documentary
I always thought the shag was a dance. That might explain a few things.

Motown On The Mersey - Radio 2 Show - Documentary
Don't like Craig Charles, but I enjoyed the programme. Had some interesting contributions from people who were actually there. Although I was surprised Robert Elms wasn't on, as I'm pretty sure he was responsible for the Mersey Soul Scene getting off the ground in the first place. I also believe he was the first man in the world to wear a Beatle jacket. The programme also raised the question in my mind that, as Liverpool was such a musically advanced city in the early 60s, witness all the obscure R&B Soul records covered by the Mersey groups, how come the Northern scene hasn't made much of an impact in that part of the North West. Answers on a postcard to...... This one not that one

Did Blackpool Mecca Play Bad Records?
The thing with the Mecca was that some/many of the records played in the latter period were certainly a bit naff and didn't work elsewhere and definitely don't sound good today, was that we got carried away with the whole "Meccaness" of it all, the overall scene there was somehow bigger than the tunes played. (I include Meco in this) Maybe its a bit like the Gary Lewis/Nosmo King sort of stuff played at Wigan, they are unplayable now, except perhaps in an ironic way (at Christmas?), but at the time were danced to and collected just as keenly as the proper soul tunes were. It was for a while part of the Wigan experience. Tone (this one, not that one)

Darrell Banks On E-buy
No Colin, got one from a rock 'n roll shop, 50p, they weren't interested in soul in those days, and the other from a junk shop. Also had the Red and White SS demo. Rich pickings back in those far off days before the world turned sour. Tone

Darrell Banks On E-buy
had 2 copies on London over the years , I may be regretting selling them now, but then again 70 odd quid was a lot in the 70s. tone

Soul Britannia
Exclusive to Soul Source - Robert Elms and Jazzie b actually did visit the Casino - there they are in Dutch's Triumph, which he tells me he actually designed whilst still a schoolboy. Tone (this one not that one)

Soul Britannia
I shan't be watching it till tomorrow and I'm already livid, hope I get to sleep grrrrrrrrrrr! PS Why do we need a documentary on the scene, the true story is in our own heads (man). There's no bleedin' Elms or Jazzie B to distort things and the records are better! Tone (this one, not that one)
