  1. Nothing wrong with the button down, perry, loafers, brogues look, its a classic style that almost always looks good, whereas the bags 'n vest 'n badge brigade just look plain daft these days. If you're anywhere near my age, what photos would you rather look at, those taken of you in the 70s, all hair and moustaches, or the ones taken in the 60s? - I know when I looked the smartest. tone Your Man @ C&A

  5. I always thought the shag was a dance. That might explain a few things.
  6. Don't like Craig Charles, but I enjoyed the programme. Had some interesting contributions from people who were actually there. Although I was surprised Robert Elms wasn't on, as I'm pretty sure he was responsible for the Mersey Soul Scene getting off the ground in the first place. I also believe he was the first man in the world to wear a Beatle jacket. The programme also raised the question in my mind that, as Liverpool was such a musically advanced city in the early 60s, witness all the obscure R&B Soul records covered by the Mersey groups, how come the Northern scene hasn't made much of an impact in that part of the North West. Answers on a postcard to...... This one not that one
  7. The thing with the Mecca was that some/many of the records played in the latter period were certainly a bit naff and didn't work elsewhere and definitely don't sound good today, was that we got carried away with the whole "Meccaness" of it all, the overall scene there was somehow bigger than the tunes played. (I include Meco in this) Maybe its a bit like the Gary Lewis/Nosmo King sort of stuff played at Wigan, they are unplayable now, except perhaps in an ironic way (at Christmas?), but at the time were danced to and collected just as keenly as the proper soul tunes were. It was for a while part of the Wigan experience. Tone (this one, not that one)
  8. Saw Hot Choc supporting Harold Melvin (inc Teddy P) at Southampton about a hundred years ago, have to say that they were really good. fave tune, It started with a kiss Tone (me not him)
  9. No Colin, got one from a rock 'n roll shop, 50p, they weren't interested in soul in those days, and the other from a junk shop. Also had the Red and White SS demo. Rich pickings back in those far off days before the world turned sour. Tone
  10. had 2 copies on London over the years , I may be regretting selling them now, but then again 70 odd quid was a lot in the 70s. tone

  13. A mate of mine has just won something on ebay and the US seller wants $14 postage for a 45! tone
  14. Exclusive to Soul Source - Robert Elms and Jazzie b actually did visit the Casino - there they are in Dutch's Triumph, which he tells me he actually designed whilst still a schoolboy. Tone (this one not that one)
  15. I shan't be watching it till tomorrow and I'm already livid, hope I get to sleep grrrrrrrrrrr! PS Why do we need a documentary on the scene, the true story is in our own heads (man). There's no bleedin' Elms or Jazzie B to distort things and the records are better! Tone (this one, not that one)
  16. Sorry to put a spaniard in the works but doesn't September Jones sound just a tad MOR? Backing tracks are nice though. Tone (this one, not that one)
  17. Nothing too controversial - makes a change. Another plus point no contributions from Robert Elms or Stuart Maconie, amazing. Tony Ellis (no relation)
  18. Just heard a trailer for a Radio 4 programme called The Story of Northern Soul its on today Tues at 11.30 Tone
  19. As one of Ady's original 100 club djs I would just like to say how sad I am for him and all the regulars at the loss of this legendary venue and wish everyone luck with the new (temporary?) home. Although I haven't been there for a long time I have fond memories of many great nights there. Tony E
  20. I love this show! there I said it
  21. Wot a lorra twaddle, someone is always trying to read something into the reason our scene exists. To say that we identify with the African-American experience is balls, how could we even pretend to take on board what it is to be black and American (an English black person probably hasn't had the same experiences either). What these dopes don't understand is that we just like the music and the feeling that you get from being part of a scene that on the whole outsiders don't understand, despite all the references to Northern Soul in the media, its a sure thing for the most part that they really don't get what its all about apart from Robert Elms (joke). A short list should sum it up for anyone who's not sure - Dancing, vinyl, drugs, alcohol, large wooden dancefloors a long way from home, motorways, friendship and moustaches (thats a 70s reference). Happy Christmas to all my readers Tone
  22. Just like to say that I've just bought the record - its brilliant! Tone
  23. Who are the Ringtones then?
  24. Absolutely marvelous. I'll try and do some of the moves at Bisley tonight! Tone
  25. Very sorry to hear of Pedro's death, I haven't seen him for years , but remember him from loads of soul nights down south in the 70's especially at Shades of Green in Camberley and at Yate. He was a good bloke. Please pass on my sympathy to his family Tony E
