  1. Never seen that Jackie Edwards before , cheers for posting it up
  2. Found an article in The Independent regarding the concept of the Southport Weekenders : Who had the bright idea? In 1987, Alex Lowes, a record shop owner in the North-east, decided to hold a one-off soul weekend at a holiday camp in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Six hundred people turned up, a wild time was had by all, and Alex was bitten by the organising bug. As the dance scene grew so did interest in the weekenders and 4,000 people unsuccessfully applied for tickets for the last one in November.
  3. Yes there was a weekender held at Berwick , can't recall if Alex Lowes was involved , but it would of been about 87 - 88

  15. Does anybody remember the " UpNorth " security at the Weekenders at Southport in the late 80's , bunch of skinheads who would subject your vehicle to the most rigorous of searches that the KGB or STASI would of been proud of , confiscate all your booze then you'd see them outside their accommodation , sitting around a huge camp fire getting shitfaced on all their proceeds !!!!!!!!, Happy Days !!!!
  16. I love these ones !!! after 25 yrs I still regard myself as a kid !!! , off to Blackpool next week wth a bunch of lads nearly 20 yrs my senior , nearly 60, /but still drinking , dancing . collecting and regularly attending soul nights / occasional nighter Personally they make me feel young
  17. She's a fox !!! and the records a great dancer too
  18. Old Gary Rushbrooke discovery / spin , was'nt it ?
  19. Don't know if this one has been covered before but just curious We are all aware of some outstanding records over the years to get played and rightly so to become classics on our scene, namely The Nomads , Soul Set , Judy Hughes , Vivian Carrol , etc etc etc ... We have even had a few blue eyed compilations put together , e.g. Rare Blue Eyed Northern Soul and latetly Northern Soul At The Beach , which are quality albums , BUT do you think a DJ would get away with a full set of white artists in his set at a soul night or a nighter as a bit of something different OR would some folks twig and bombard him with requests from black artists !!! Personally I don't think it matters , I'm a massive fan of the Carolina beach music scene and could easily listen to a whole soul night of it , never mind a spot !!! Whats your views on this one ?
  20. Great record !
  21. When I hear the phrase " Soul Boy " I cringe !!! As it reminds me of the above , not knocking it , as I'm sure a lot of ss members went BUT I was painted with this brush growing up , people thought I was into Lynx ( the group , not the spray !!! ) , Junior , Imagination , etc .... When I was trying to track down a copy of this !!!!!
