  1. Ian What's the news on Verna Francis ? I thought she did a great job on 'Because of you'. Where did you find her & are you cutting other things on her ? And what's going on with Brenda Holloway - are you still working with her ? Thanks Garry
  2. Brother Mooney is currently under house arrest whilst he completes the mastering of the forthcoming Soulscape CD on Big John Hamilton.
  3. Folks I've had several emails in the last few days asking about these 2 upcoming 45s. They're being pressed in the US and are estimated to be here mid-January. These are a limited press of 500 copies, so for anyone wanting to get their order in now - details & soundclips are available at : www.garryjcape.com/hitandrun.htm Thanks Garry (for avoidance of doubt - the 'second issue' under my avatar relates to me - not the 45s !)
  4. Chris 1. you've obviously never roomed with him - when he's got a bottle of red inside him, you only ever hear the same story ... over and over.. and over..... 2. I don't think he's been going to the US that many times for the past 20 years. Like a lot of (us) old timers, he can't take the crap at the airports and at US Immigration anymore. 3. but he wouldn't be the same if he didn't... Merry Christmas to all .. and Happy Hogmanay to him too ............. Garry
  5. For it to be a comprehensive compilation of his work, the licensing for that would be such a challenge that it probably wouldn't be cost effective with the limited appeal it would have - and would be down to someone who didn't choose to observe the niceties of licensing .......
  6. Yes - and Snake loved it really. To be fair to the Snakemeister, he had been doing a solo gig in Barnsley previously and had got held up there. He sent the group ahead to get set up so he could jump on stage as soon as he got there. Sound check was a bit of fun (almost like PPM at Prestatyn.....)
  7. Nope, it's not..... but Shirley is a bit like Johnnie Taylor was ... why get on a plane and go through all the crap when she can get all the gigs she wants in the Southern States ...... a lot of acts I talk with have a paranoia of flying.
  8. A night to compare with that was when Dave Box had his 60th birthday at The Frobisher and he brought in Syl Johnson and Jackie Ross. Financially a disaster for Dave - but then you're 60 only once I guess ....... If you want hooking up with any Soulscape acts, let me know. Garry
  9. Good morning Ian Out of interest, where did you get this 10k number from ? I was always thinking that something like this Pinnacle thing would happen - so for that reason Soulscape, and previously Grapevine, never allowed themselves to be put in the situation where a distributor had that amount of control over them. Because of that, the sales might not have been what they could have been - but it did mean I got paid for every single CD that I ever shipped. Best Garry
  10. I'll start a new thread on this closer to release date - but for the moment, thanks Sean - at least I've sold one copy - do you have 499 friends ?
  11. OK - here's the true story. John Anderson and I got a deal thru Bernie Binnick to each take 100 copies of every TK record in the Tones Dist warehouse in Miami just before they took them all to be ground up because they didn't want to keep paying the rental on the storage facility. We had to take 100 each of everything because they didn't want to waste the time looking for individual titles. So we got 100 each of every freaking KC 45...the only thing I recall not being there was the Charles Johnson on Alston. It's all very well joking now that I was selling them at £8 and £15 .... but the simple fact is that I'd been listing it for yonks at £8 and nobody had the 'ear' to buy it until it started getting played. In fact, some may have even gone in those TK Soul Packs I did in order to get rid of the KC's and George McRae's etc. I can't remember Cliff buying a bunch, but I can remember selling the last 10 or so to Tim Brown for £35 each. So whilst other people got a bargain, I'd paid 10c each - so I was pleased to be selling it too .... plus all the other TK deepsoul stuff that I sold for far bigger money to Japan and the other stuff I had on my shelf when the funk resurgence happened - thank you very much. So - all round, everybody was happy. And to make everybody happier (possibly ?) there'll be a revival of my 'Hit and Run' label in January 2009 - the first 2 45s will be Mary Gresham and Doris Allen - 4 storming dancers. All 4 previously unreleased (other than my Soulscape CDs) - so the big question is - will they be able to be played at venues... classic real soul from back in the day, first time on vinyl, first time on 45... what other excuse can anyone find for not playing them ? not rare enough ? ......... tricky...
  12. I'm looking for someone who has Roscoe's 'Leave you in the arms of your other man' on Gerri. I don't need the Atlantic cut, and I don't need the Seventy 7 cut which I had repressed. Anyone who can help me out with this, please pm me at garry@garryjcape.com. Thanks
  13. Add to that the fact that I had a 100 box of the yellow 'Can't you see' - must have been about 10 or 15 years ago now - I think that at the time I did seem to flood the market here with them - but I was selling it at £30, I think. I do recalla lot of mine went to Japan. They came from the label owner via a well-known Southern onestop friend.
  14. Yes, we did Ted Ford - lots of the deep things which had originally come out on Sound Stage 7 - Little Richie too. I seem to recall that some of them were pressed on the Seventy 7 label copy - but actually had Sound Plus release prefix SP - nothing sinsiter or mystical - just that John R had thousands of the Seventy 7 backgrounds pre-printed and in those days you just printed the label copy over the top of them with the individual release details.
  15. As a matter of interest, yes - the yellow one is the original 'Seventy 7' release. I had John Richbourg repress it - on the orange/black label - I sold 2,500 to Neil Rushton and 1,000 to my guys in Holland for the flip side 'You're Letting Me Down'. So there must be copies out there if anyone's looking for it.
  16. oooh, 'eck ... a shiny little disc ... I wonder how they'll figure that one out .... but yes, it was never released in the US - so does that make it legitimate to play it out ?
  17. Any idea when the full cd will be released? erm on Monday Fraser - like it says on the original post ...... Cheers, Garry www.garryjcape.com
  18. Just got word from the plant that the new Soulscape CD will be here on Friday this week. Doris Allen : A Shell of a woman - this is one for Southern soul fans - but contains 2 stunning tracks of interest to the dancefloor. 'Candy from a baby' is an absolute monster Northern dancer from 1969 - never released at the time and only ever available previously on a 500-press 1987 Japanese LP. 'Let's Walk Down The Street Together' is a completely unreleased midtempo winner - from 1987 - and has been getting plays on internet radio. Sound clips on both are online at - www.garryjcape.com/sscd7012.htm
  19. Hi Alex There was a Sound Stage 7 compilation on Lattimore released in 2006 by the Australian label AIM - it is available online quite cheaply. Given the global nature of the marketplace now, I think it unlikely that any UK label would do a CD on Lattimore now. My own label 'Soulscape' is in the process of putting together CDs on Lattimore's SS7 stablemates Sam Baker, Ella Washington and Roscoe Robinson. Garry www.garryjcape.com
  20. For the full schedule of Soulscape releases, see - www.garryjcape.com
  21. Hi Maria Thanks for the kind words. 'Get it over anyway' was included on the 'Troubled Waters' CD I compiled on Grapevine - to the best of my recollection, it has never been available on a 7 - but it was on the Japanese vinyl LP 'Hold On'. Garry
  22. Just to let those interested know that this is now scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday May 27th. Track listing and sound clips are at www.garryjcape.com - with online ordering facility. Thanks.
  23. Yes, Ian - I remember buying it at W H Smith's in Dewsbury - one week it was there, next week it had gone. It's still on my music book shelf today ... 90p !
