Oh dear boys and girls - I've just come on to this and do feel like I'm missing out on all the fun. Problem for today is that I've got better things to do with my Sunday - but I promise to be back and join in. One thing I'm unsure of Bitch - have you a particular grievance with me ? my label ? this particular record ? other big ticket items being released in general ? it's unclear ( to me, at any rate, from your postings) Have fun whilst I'm away. Garry

You're right - I'd forgotten that Jimmy Ruffin had 2 releases - now I feel like those old geezers in the States who can't remember what happened back in the day ................

The red series was originally conceived as a sister 7 inch label - then John decided that 12 was his preferred format - and as the vinyl was his main thing, and the CDs were my main thing, that's the way it came out. I really liked then, and still do now, the Queen Isabella.

Yes, thanks to Steve for the article - and to all those who supported Grapevine 2000 at the time. It's also honest to hear that some collectors are prepared to admit that they didn't really pay the releases proper attention at the time - we really did try to release the 'less than obvious' stuff, provided it had real quality - which most of them did, and still do. As Paul has alluded to, Soul Junction was started as a subsidiary label because there was just so much stuff coming in that we thought merited release and because many people were telling us that the reason they weren't buying them was because they were UK releases whereas they wanted US-style releases. Grapevine 2000 was always going to remain a UK-style label - so we chose to get Soul Junction 45s pressed in the US with the larger hole. There were 4 releases on Soul Junction and all sold better than most of the Grapevine releases. A couple of years after Grapevine ceased, John resurrected Soul Junction with Dave - and I resurrected my own previous label Hit and Run. Both labels continue to release quality 45s - and as with Grapevine - they may not all be the obvious titles which are released elsewhere, but I think they are all pretty good and as all are limited runs you can bet that people will be looking for them in years to come. Thanks for your support - then and now. Garry

Go Ahead.....Richard Searling's New Label
Dewsburyborn commented on Goldsoul's article in News Archives
My editing was done to make the point Nev - the sentiments were not aimed directly at you - more at the point of what the scene tolerates..... someone else made the point that it is often a case of who does the reissuing as to whether it is met favourably or not - and there's something in that too. My own 'raison d'etre' is mainly to release previously unissued material - but then that's been bitched at too as there is no built-up demand, so I take the view now that I'll release what my own taste tells me is good. Whether people decline to buy them for whatever reason is their choice. -
Go Ahead.....Richard Searling's New Label

I can't help but remembering that when John Anderson and I had Grapevine 2000 and we did that on some of our releases, we got slagged to fook -
That was probably me - I got about 25 of this and 25 of the Richard C on Sho-Boat from Earl Randle in Memphis, as he had been involved in the productions I think. I think I was doing them both at about £30, and even though they all went neither record ever seemed to go up in value.

Has anyone noticed how similar the hook on William Bollinger is to Chuck Jackson 'I don't want to cry' ? (apart from the obvious similarity in the title) Nobody has mentioned the Ted Taylor played ....... nice record, and the Candi too............

New Real Soul Artist - Brand New Album
Dewsburyborn replied to Sean Hampsey's topic in All About the SOUL
Y'all didn't see her on Jools Holland a few weeks ago with a band containing David Hood and Clayton Ivey ? -
Since my posting yesterday, I've had several emails asking if I still have any Anla's left for sale. Sorry, no - I no longer have any 45s other than the 'Hit and Run' label which I release. When I downsized in 2005 and sold my stock of 45s to Craig Moerer there were quite a few Anla titles in there, so he may have some left ? Garry
-
As Flynny says, there were lots of them around a few years ago. I knew the owners of the label, and also several of the other labels along the I-10 corridor in Louisiana. I had a couple of hundred of many of the Anla's and the Soul Unlimited's and Soul Sound's and Lanor's etc. Of course, John Anderson had been there first a good 20+ years before - but a lot of the releases came back into demand with the resurgence of the rare funk scene. I remember Derek Tamala Barnett - he used to cut my hair when he was upstairs in the arcade, almost next door to the orginal Jumbo Records. Also whatever happened to Stew Marvin - he used to del with Rick Vaughn as I recall.
-
Correct Sebastian ! The master sent to manufacturing sounded 1st class and I have every confidence that the TPs soon to be received will sound exactly the same before they get the OK to proceed.
-
just dubbed OFF a disc ...... but it probably sounds better than the original pressing... there seems to be this misconception amongst some that anything that isn't taken off the master tapes is inferior ? I've lost count of the number of times where I've found unreleased master tapes that have been shagged beyond use ..... and in some cases I've had to resort to dubbing vinyl even where the master tapes do exist because they're no good anymore. I recall a previous thread on Soul Source where it has been well written that no master tapes exist anymore for this and most of Bob McRee's other stuff.

Hello Julian Your posting gives me an opportunity to say that this will be the next release on 'Hit and Run' in January 2011. Full details will appear on the website (www.garryjcape.com) in a couple of weeks. Being a Soulscape release, it goes without saying that this is being done in accord with Bob McRee the producer and owner of the masters. Regards Garry

Does any have other gigs seperately over here at the same time ? - it seems like an awful lot of dosh to be bringing them all in just for 2 dates - you can be sure these folks won't be flying coach class transatlantic or staying at a motorway services Days Inn..
