Have to agree with Dave Kil on this one. Although football violence was already in full swing well before Skinheads came into being, the Skinheads took it to a new level. I would agree that the Shinhead/Bovver Boy thing originated in London.I was involved, loosely as I was only 12/13, with a notorious gang of Leeds fans who all wore steel cap boots and combat jackets as their "uniform". In about 1968 we met our first skinhead, who for some reason was a Chelsea fan from Bradford. Within weeks the gang were all wearing Levis,Braces and the haircuts, lets face it the "look" itself was intimidating. The "casuals", ICF and all that stuff was well after and really had nothing to do with Skinheads, who had reverted to Mods/Scooter boys, although many retained the dress code. I started going to All-Nighters just after the Wheel closed and most of us who started at that time were "suedeheads" i.e. ex skinheads who had drifted/moved away from the football violence thing. We had adopted the "Mod" ethic again, and started to dress more stylishly. We were a sort of counter culture to the "hairies",Hippys etc who were using Dope/LSD. With regard to Villains etc I would say that the scene, especially in the early days, have more than its fair share. The L'Ambassaador in Bradford was usiually about 50/50 villains and non villains. Lets face it the lifestyle did not lend itself to holding down a job and being a "regular" guy. I too also get a bit dogged off by the "clean" image that is often portrayed about the Northern Scene. As someone has already said if you didnt know who was who and have enough mates around, you were gonna get rolled, end of. Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I'd Like To Hear What Was Played
Kegsy replied to Quinvy's topic in All About the SOUL
Also on the story of the Ad Libs - Franny O'Brien and John Bollen used to borrow Dave Godin's copy and bring it Lord Jim's, Vic Lounge, that pub in Keighley who's name I forget and other places in West Yorkshire for us to play. Happy times Julian The Vic Lounge, If Carlsberg did Juke Boxes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The pub in Keighley would be The Wellington old boy. Kegsy -
Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I'd Like To Hear What Was Played
Kegsy replied to Quinvy's topic in All About the SOUL
As a raw nighter recruit in 1971 my first venue, approx 9 months after the Wheel shut was (as I've said before) The L'ambassadeur in Bradford. The sounds played as far as I recollect were virtually all old Wheel sounds, and apart from Ric Tic and Mirwood stuff, were played predominantly on British copies. The lads who DJ'ed were all old Wheel regulars. When the Junction/Torch came on stream' I believe there was a major infux of new kids onto the scene, in fact by the time of the Torch the new kids considerably outnumbered the old Wheel crew.Plus many Wheel regulars I knew never made the transition to the Torch. There was also a certain elitism, not by all I hasten to add, regarding those who had been to the wheel and those who had not, understandable I suppose. Imported records were not a major part of playlists until 72/73 when Bradford Market, F.L.Moores and a few others started bringing container loads over from the states. This meant that, since the British record catalogue had been fairly well trawled, there were few new discoveries between the Wheel closing and the Torch opening apart from what was happening at the Mecca, but the Mecca wasnt an all nighter. I also remember that prior to Bradford Market, when record hunting, it was always in little shops that didnt have an import amongst the thousand in the racks. So I agree with Malc that most of the records at the Torch were new to most of the kids attending, wherever they had been played before. It is a bit of surprise to me though that "Tell Me Its Just A Rumour" was available before the MFP LP and that "Ghost In My House" was played out prior to it being found on a 45. I think that people need to realise the Scene in those days was relatively small (less than 500 regulars ?) compared to the Wigan (best disco in the world) days. Therefore what was played where and by whom is always gonna be a contentious issue. Small venues that were not nighters and may have done mid week nights could have played all sorts of stuff, but it was not until it was played at the Wheel that it became a Sound. On the Imports theme "Babay Reconsider" was a complete anomaly. Definately a Wheel record and still rare as rocking horse shit. Kegsy -
There is also a version by Marge Dodson. Kegsy

Kegsy, Are you calling me a f**** liar? Cos I'm calling you one. The Bradford market supply came in 1972/1973, not 1971. L'Ambassadeur (I can spell it correctly as still have my membership and you would have only been about 12 then..) There were at least two very popular nighters after the Wheel shut. I should know I went to them...THE LANTERN MARKET HARBOROUGH and THE METRO WAKEFIELD. L'AMBASSADEUR started late 1971. I never heard MGW at any of those places. I either first heard it at Blackpool Mecca or CREWE or TORCH. The Catacombs only ever had 1 all-nighter and that was the night it closed down. HOW DID YOU USED TO GET IN THERE? You still only look about 28 now. Much love Kegsy, Swish. Have you been on the sauce Old Boy ? I know when the L'ambassadeur started as I went to about every one, inc the night it got busted and we ended up in the big day cell with the discotron. Still pretty sure i knew MGW before the Torch etc, so where would I hear it except the L'ambo, unless it was a sunday night session a the Hole In The Wall when some of the older nighter/ Wheel lads used to play records. Cant engage in the argument about it being played at the wheel as I never went. But I know for sure it was played at the L'Ambassador in Bradford which started just after the Wheel shut. Now whether it FIRST came off Bradford market with all the other Verve/MGM stuff I dont know but there was definately copies on there as I had a few. So I reckon it was known before then which would probably suggest it was a Wheel record. It may be my memory but I dont think the Cats was doing nighters at his point. Kegsy

Might be better if you specify what you want. No disrepect, but it would take ages to go thru what I've got as the records are stored by artist not label, and I still might not have what you are after even tho I probably have dozens on the label. Cheers Kegsy
